Bhupendra Patel condoles demise of former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani in Air India plane crash, says
Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], June 13 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed deep condolences on the passing of former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Rupani was among the 241 passengers who lost their lives in the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI-171, a London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, on Thursday.
In a post on X, CM Patel said, 'I express my deep grief over the demise of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijaybhai Rupani in the Ahmedabad plane crash. Vijaybhai, a gentle and sensitive personality, had faithfully discharged various responsibilities as a skilled organizer in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and later in the party.'

'As the Chief Minister of Gujarat, his contribution in taking forward the all-round development journey of the state with transparent and decisive leadership will always be remembered. From the Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan to the Gyan Kunj project in schools, his successful and fruitful efforts are unforgettable. May God grant peace to the departed soul and give strength to his relatives and supporters to bear this grief,' he added.

BJP functionary held in criminal case in Chennai
Avadi City Police has arrested a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) functionary from Padiyanallur on charges of cheating two consumer durable suppliers and also threatening them. Accused a history-sheeter Police identified the suspect as alias 'Milagaipodi' Venkatesan, 58, from Padiyanallur who is a functionary of BJP OBC Morcha. He had been arrested in 2015 by the Andhra Pradesh police under charges of smuggling red sandalwood to foreign countries. Venkatesan has 50-odd criminal cases pending against him including seven at the Redhills Police Station — including an attempt to murder case — and he has been arrested under the Goondas Act in 2011 as well. He was also registered as a history-sheeter, but in 2013, he moved a writ petition before the Madras High Court seeking a cancellation of the history sheet and got a favourable order. Venkatesan had also been a former member of the youth wing of the AIADMK and later he was removed from the AIADMK in 2015 after he was arrested in a smuggling case. Subsequently he joined the BJP. Police sources said Venkatesan recently came out on bail. Two consumer durable suppliers have approached him to get their money from another dealer who wilfully defaulted the payment. He received commission from them and however, he joined the dealer and threatened the duo. Based on their complaint, police arrested him on Friday and remanded him. Venkatesan recently posted a photo of him taken with Union Home Minister Amit Shah when the latter visited last week in Madurai on social media and tagged the posts with higher police officers to show that he was an influential person, said police sources.

Vijay Rupani Cancelled London Ticket Twice, June 12 Was Not His 1st Choice
New Delhi: Former Gujarat Chief Minister, Vijay Rupani, was among the 242 people on board the doomed Air India 787-8 Dreamliner, which crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12. Only one survived, and 241 people died, including the former Chief Minister. But, flying to London on June 12 to meet his wife and daughter was not Mr Rupani's first choice. The former chief minister first booked his ticket for May 19 on flight AI171 and intended to fly back to India on June 25. With a change in plans, Mr Rupani cancelled his ticket for May 19 and decided to fly on June 5. The former Chief Minister cancelled his second ticket too and booked seat number 2D on flight AI 171 for June 12, which crashed in less than a minute after taking off. CCTV footage from the runway showed the aircraft was airborne for only 32 seconds before crashing into the hostel building of BJ Medical College, which is close to the airport. A huge fireball followed the crash, damaging the hostel building. Several casualties were reported at the medical college, too. '1206' And Mr Rupani's Personal Connect The number '1206' stood for good fortune for Mr Rupani, who used it on his car, scooter and official number plate of his vehicle as Chief Minister. He considered it lucky for him until it wasn't. The former Chief Minister died on June 12 (12/06) in the crash. 12/06, according to friends, family, and party colleagues, was a personal emblem for Mr Rupani. Vijay Rupani's Political Life Mr Rupani served as Gujarat's 16th Chief Minister from August 2016 to September 2021. Born in Rangoon (now Yangon), Burma, in 1956, his family migrated to Rajkot in the 1960s following political instability in Southeast Asia. He began his political career as a student activist and became a municipal corporator in Rajkot in 1987. Over the next three decades, he held a range of administrative and legislative roles, including as minister for transport, water supply, and labour. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2006 to 2012. In 2014, he was appointed as a minister in the Gujarat government, where he served till 2016, followed by taking over as the Chief Minister in the same year, a position he held till 2021 before resigning ahead of the assembly elections as part of the BJP's leadership reset. Mr Rupani remained active in organisational affairs. He held a senior advisory role within the party's Gujarat unit and was frequently consulted on matters related to state policy and elections.

Rebel Akali leader Sikandar Singh Maluka back in SAD, to campaign in Ludhiana West
In the run-up to the June 19 Ludhiana West assembly byelection, veteran Akali leader and former cabinet minister Sikandar Singh Maluka was re-inducted into the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in Chandigarh on Saturday. Welcoming him back into the party fold a year after his unceremonious removal as head of the SAD disciplinary committee, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal described his return as 'a major boost for the party'. 'It gives me immense pleasure to welcome veteran Akali leader Sikandar Singh Maluka back to the Shiromani Akali Dal,' Sukhbir said, acknowledging his contributions to strengthening the party under the leadership of former chief minister and party patriarch late Parkash Singh Badal. 'I am happy to be back in my party,'said Maluka, who is set to campaign for the SAD to win over its traditional base in the high-stakes assembly byelection. In his post on X, Sukhbir urged Punjabis to unite in support of Punjab's 'only regional party' for peace and development in the state. Maluka, who rejoined the party in the presence of SAD secretary general Balwinder Singh Bhundar and former minister Daljit Singh Cheema, was once considered a close aide of the Badals and had been the SAD's Bathinda district president for 28 years. His daughter-in-law, Parampal Kaur Sidhu, a former IAS officer, had unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha election from Bathinda in June 2024 as the BJP candidate against the SAD's Harsimrat Kaur Badal. Maluka's son, Gurpreet Singh, is a former chairman of the Bathinda Zila Parishad. Maluka had claimed that he had tried to stop his son and daughter-in-law from joining the BJP, but in vain. However, back then he had also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which had not gone down well with the Akali Dal leadership. In April last year, he was removed from the post of SAD's Maur assembly constituency in-charge and was replaced by former minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon. On July 30 last year, Maluka was expelled for anti-party activities along with Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) ex-president Bibi Jagir Kaur, former SAD MP Prem Singh Chandumajra, former ministers Parminder Singh Dhindsa and Surjit Singh Rakhra and former MLAs Gurpartap Singh Wadala and Surinder Singh Thekedar .The action had come a day after the rebel leaders announced a 13-member presidium to strengthen the Shiromani Akali Dal Sudhar Lehar (Shiromani Akali Dal reform movement). The rebel leaders also had approached the Sikhs' highest temporal seat Akal Takht seeking a pardon for mistakes committed during two terms of the SAD-BJP government from 2007-17. The Sudhar Lehar was dissolved last December on the directions of then Akal Takht jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh.
