Barca cancel Japan pre-season friendly citing contractual breaches
The LaLiga champions were scheduled to play Japanese side Vissel Kobe on Sunday, and to play South Korea's FC Seoul on July 31 and Daegu FC on August 4.
"Barcelona announces that it has been obliged to suspend its participation in the game scheduled for next Sunday in Japan due to serious contractual breaches on behalf of the promoter," Barca said in a statement on Wednesday.
"Nevertheless, the club will consider readjusting the leg of the summer tour in South Korea," it said, "if certain conditions are met by the promoter.
"If these conditions are met, then the club will travel to South Korea in the coming days. Barcelona regrets this incident and the impact it will have on the many, many Barca fans in Japan."
In a statement on Thursday, Vissel Kobe apologised to fans.
"We sincerely apologise for any concern this may cause to the many fans and related parties who were looking forward to this match," the J1 League club said.
"Our club is working in collaboration with relevant parties to gather necessary information and take appropriate measures."
Barcelona did not identify the promoter in its statement, but when the tour was first announced it had named them as the YASUDA Group.
Reuters has contacted YASUDA for comment.
The promoter for matches in South Korea, D-DRIVE, said on Thursday they wanted to make the remainder of the tour a success.
"To our fans in Korea: please rest assured — D-DRIVE remain fully committed to making the rest of the tour a success. We will continue to do our utmost to deliver unforgettable matches," D-DRIVE CEO Seul Ham said in a statement. — REUTERS

Endo captains Liverpool against hometown club
WATARU Endo said he could not join Yokohama F Marinos after a trial at the J-League club years ago, after the Japan midfielder returned to his hometown side on Wednesday as a Liverpool player. It was the first time Endo played in the Liverpool shirt in his own country as the Premier League champions beat Yokohama 3-1 in a pre-season friendly. "I supported this club actually and I went to (a) trial but I couldn't join this club. Now I came back here as a player of (Liverpool). It was a dream-come-true moment," the 32-year-old told Liverpool's official website. "It was an amazing moment for me because I came back to Japan as a Liverpool player. For me, it meant a lot." Endo made his senior debut at Shonan Bellmare, a club based in Hiratsuka, over 30 kilometres away from Yokohama. He played for Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart before joining Liverpool in 2023. Virgil van Dijk handed Endo the captain's armband as the latter replaced the Dutchman in the second half. "I think it was a great gesture. I think all Japanese people maybe wanted me to be captain," Endo added. Liverpool begin their Premier League title defence with a home game against Bournemouth on Aug 15.

An astonishing July, which culminated in Woad winning the Scottish Open in her first event as a professional, had made the 21-year-old favourite for the year's final major. But the former Florida State University player found the going tough on the south Wales coast as she ground out a level-par round of 72 thanks to a birdie at the last. Okayama's five-under 67 gave her the lead before she was joined by Takeda after she birdied the 18th. Japanese players dominated the opening day with Miyu Yamashita at four-under ahead of a large group on three-under that included Chevron Championship winner Mao Saigo, Shiho Kuwaki and Chisato Iwai. Reigning champion Lydia Ko of New Zealand and world number one Nelly Korda, like Woad, failed to take advantage of relatively calm conditions. Ko finished on one over, while American Korda was two-under par. World number 139 Okayama bogeyed her opening hole but birdied five of the next eight and was rock solid on the way back with another birdie at the 17th moving her ahead. Takeda recovered from a double-bogey seven at the ninth with four birdies on the back nine, putting her joint first. By far the largest galleries assembled just after lunchtime to watch Woad in a group alongside Ko and American Lilia Vu. Despite it being her first major as a professional, Surrey-born Woad's win at the Irish Open and then missing out by one stroke at the Evian Championship just before turning pro meant she arrived in Wales with sky-high expectations. Woad was a cumulative 55-under-par for her last three tournaments and the crowd did not have to wait long for a glimpse of her quality as she rolled in a birdie at the first. A bogey at the third and another at the fifth followed but she then had the crowd cheering as a long putt from the edge of the sixth green disappeared for another birdie. Woad struggled to gain any momentum though and scrambled for a par-five at the ninth. A bogey on the 11th put her one over for the round but she got back to level with a birdie three at the 14th after a majestic approach shot.
