Over 4,300 thalassemia patients registered in portal; Majority under age 12: Govt in RS

New Delhi, July 29 (UNI) As many as 4,361 thalassemia patients have been registered on the National Sickle Cell Portal, with children below the age of 12 accounting for a significant share ie 2,579 cases, data shared by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare today in the Rajya Sabha revealed. Responding to a written question in this regard, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel stated that a dedicated thalassemia module was integrated into the Sickle Cell Portal in 2023. The module enables States and Union Territories to systematically upload patient records, thereby facilitating regular monitoring, follow-ups, and data-driven surveillance on a national scale. The Minister noted that while the overall responsibility for thalassemia-related management and public awareness lies with respective State and UT governments, the Centre continues to extend support under the National Health Mission (NHM). This includes both financial and logistical assistance aimed at strengthening public health infrastructure. 'Support is provided for a range of services, including screening and treatment, provision of medicines, blood bank facilities, day care centres, laboratory services, training of healthcare personnel, and Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities,' Patel said. These measures are incorporated into the Programme Implementation Plans submitted annually by States and UTs, she added. Highlighting ongoing efforts to improve access to advanced treatment, the Minister also referred to the Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana (TBSY), an initiative supported by Coal India Limited under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) mandate. The scheme provides financial assistance of up to Rs10 lakh for bone marrow transplants (BMT) in eligible patients, and is currently operational across 17 empanelled hospitals nationwide. UNI AJ SSP

World Hepatitis Day 2025: Only 3 pc Hepatitis B Patients in India aware of their ailment

New Delhi, July 28(UNI) Just about three per cent of Hepatitis B Patients in India are aware about their ailment, and less than one per cent of them receive treatment, said Rajesh Bhushan, Former Secretary, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India today. "Only 3 pc of hepatitis B patients in India are aware of their condition, and less than 1% of eligible individuals are receiving antiviral treatment. These are not just statistics, they reflect a silent public health crisis that demands immediate, coordinated action,' said Bhushan while addressing the 'Illness to Wellness' Awareness Conference held in New Delhi on the occasion of World Hepatitis Day. The Illness to Wellness Foundation organised the conference in New Delhi today, to mark World Hepatitis Day, centred around the theme 'Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment for Hepatitis.' The event brought together medical experts, policymakers, and public health advocates to highlight the urgency of tackling India's growing hepatitis burden through policy reform, improved access, and greater public awareness. Bhushan underscored the need for bold, systemic efforts. He identified five urgent priorities to address the increasing hepatitis cases - expanded screening and surveillance, ensuring timely birth-dose vaccination, decentralisation of treatment access, driving community-level awareness, and using real-time data for action. He also stressed the need for robust partnerships and said, 'Strategic interventions must be driven not only by the government but also through collaboration with civil society, the private sector, public health professionals, and the medical community'. During the session, health experts highlighted alarming global data that only 45 per cent of new-borns receive the hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours of birth, which is a critical gap in prevention. They also emphasised that WHO's 2030 target to eliminate hepatitis, which calls for a 90% reduction in new infections and 80% treatment coverage, hinges on several key strategies: universal vaccination, timely diagnosis, people-centred care, and widespread public awareness to combat stigma. PM Modi, Maldivian President inaugurate MoD building in Male; India delivers two advanced portable hospital units

Male/New Delhi, July 25 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu today jointly inaugurated the state-of-the-art Ministry of Defence (MoD) building of Maldives in Male. Overlooking the Indian Ocean, the eleven-storey building is a symbol of the strong and long-standing defence and security cooperation between the two countries, a statement said. The MoD building has been constructed with India's financial assistance and will contribute towards enhancing the capabilities of the defence and law enforcement authorities of Maldives. Following the inauguration of the Dhoshimeynaa Building, the two leaders viewed a model of the building, and learned about its functions and services. Construction of the building began on 19 February, 2014. The facility will primarily house the Coast Guard division of the Defence Ministry. India has also formally delivered two advanced portable hospital units to the Maldives, marking a significant enhancement of the island nation's emergency medical response capacity and reaffirming New Delhi's commitment to regional health cooperation. Referred to as 'Arogya Maitri Health Cubes', the modular platforms are regarded as the world's first fully transportable hospitals. Each unit includes an intensive care unit (ICU), operation theatre, blood diagnostic equipment, X-ray machine, and power generator, configured to provide critical care for up to 200 individuals over a 72-hour period. Engineered for maximum mobility, the systems can be deployed by helicopter to remote areas and achieve full operational readiness in just 12 minutes. Supplementary kits and medicines allow customisation for varied scenarios, supporting a range of emergency situations. Enhancing this capability is the BHISHM app, a digital tool designed to facilitate configuration and monitor equipment inventories. The Maldives Emergency Medical Service, operating under the Ministry of Health, will oversee the integration of the new facilities into Maldives' emergency response framework. India's assistance to the Maldivian health sector has long reflected a sustained and multifaceted approach. Support has extended to the training of medical personnel, development of urban and atoll-based health infrastructure, and provision of emergency resources, including the expedited supply of Covid-19 vaccines during the pandemic.
