Eugenio Suárez says X-rays were negative after he was hit on index finger by pitch against Tigers
Suárez, who is a candidate to be traded to a contender, was hit by a 95.6 mph sinker from Will Vest in the ninth inning. He immediately doubled over in pain and quickly left the field.
'The good news is that the X-rays were negative, but it still obviously hurt,' said Suárez, who was not bending the finger. 'There are more tests scheduled for (Tuesday) and we will go from there. I'll come back as quickly as I can.'
The 34-year-old is hitting .247 with 36 homers and 87 RBIs in 104 games this season — the seventh time he has hit at least 30 homers in the last eight full seasons.
'He's very tough and he never even winces,' Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. 'When he reacts like that, you know it isn't good.'
Lovullo said he didn't blame Vest.
'I don't think there was any intent there,' Lovullo said. 'He's one of the most impressive hitters in MLB and you don't want to take those type of players off the field.'
The Diamondbacks are 51-56 and have already signaled they will be sellers at the deadline. One of the teams believed to be interested in Suárez is the Tigers. The Venezuelan was signed by Detroit at age 17 and made his debut for the club in 2014 before being traded to Cincinnati after that season.

SYDNEY (AP) — Another injury has forced late changes to Australia's lineup for the third rugby test against the British and Irish Lions, with Billy Pollard promoted to start at hooker after David Porecki and Matt Faessler were ruled out of Saturday's match. Porecki was ruled out Friday with a leg injury, making way for Pollard to move into the starting XV off the bench for his 10th test. Mariners reliever Trent Thornton carted off field after injury coming off mound in 9th inning
SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle reliever Trent Thornton was injured while coming off the mound on a ground ball in the ninth inning Thursday night and was carted off the field during the Mariners' 6-0 win over the Texas Rangers. Thornton was using crutches to get around the Mariners' locker room after the game and the team did not have an official diagnosis of the lower left leg injury he sustained on the grounder hit by Adolis Garcia with two outs. Thornton said he feared it was a significant Achilles injury and that he would have an MRI on Friday. 'It's probably the Achilles, but that's just speculation, so I'll find out tomorrow,' Thornton said. 'Very frustrating.' Thornton entered the game to start the eighth inning and retired the first five batters he faced. The right-hander then had a full count on Garcia before the righty hitter hit a grounder on his 95 mph fastball on the lower outside corner. 'I threw the pitch, and as soon as I turned, I thought I broke the guy's bat and it hit me in the back of the leg, and I fell,' Thornton said. On 7th match point, Alex Michelsen prevails in Toronto

The 26th-seeded U.S. player emerged with a 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over third-seeded Lorenzo Musetti of Italy, closing it out on his seventh match point. Up 5-3 in the third set, Michelsen squandered two match points on Musetti's serve, then needed five more match points on his own serve (while turning aside two break points for Musetti) before finally ending the 2-hour, 32-minute contest. The ending reflected a match in which Michelsen, 20, took advantage of just 2 of 9 break-point opportunities while Musetti, 23, was 2 of 12 on break-point chances. Michelsen leaned on his groundstrokes for the win. 'I am a big guy, I have got to play offensive tennis,' he said. 'Especially today, you can't give a guy like Lorenzo time to bully you around from the baseline, so I was trying to bully him around and I think in the second and third sets I did a really good job. Taking shots early. I was missing a couple but you can't make them all and I was doing a really good job executing.' Michelsen moves on to the fourth round of an ATP 1000 event for the first time. Next, he will meet fellow U.S. player Learner Tien, who beat countryman Reilly Opelka 7-6 (3), 6-3 on Thursday. 'The first time in the fourth round feels really good,' Michelsen said. 'I have put a lot of hard work in and it is finally starting to pay off a little bit. I was wondering when it would happen and I guess it is starting to happen right now.'
