Rana Atef Liverpool began their Premier League title defence in dramatic fashion, securing a late 4-2 win over Bournemouth on Friday night in the opening fixture of the 2025-26 season. The Reds showcased their new signings, with German playmaker Florian Wirtz, Dutch full-back Jeremie Frimpong, French striker Hugo Ekitike, and Hungarian left-back Milos Kerkez all making their league debuts. ❤️ — Liverpool FC (@LFC) August 15, 2025 Ekitike opened the scoring in the 37th minute before Cody Gakpo doubled the advantage early in the second half. ❤️ — Liverpool FC (@LFC) August 15, 2025 However, the match was briefly halted after Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo reported being subjected to racist abuse from a fan. Following the restart, Semenyo struck twice in quick succession (64', 77') to level the contest. Knew I had seen that before. He absolutely misses him; and so do we all. 🥺🔴 — Rare W (@eramiegbami) August 15, 2025 With the game heading towards a draw, substitute Federico Chiesa – still linked with a potential summer exit – made an instant impact, firing home in the 88th minute. Video: Mohamed Salah in tears after Liverpool fans chant Jota's name

Egyptian international and Liverpool FC star Mohamed Salah was left in tears of grief after the Reds fans chanted the name of his late teammate Diogo Jota following the match against Bournemouth in the English Premier League. Salah participated in Liverpool's match against Bournemouth on Friday evening, in the first round of the English Premier League for the 2025-26 season, which ended with the Reds winning 4-2. Mohamed Salah scored the fourth and final goal in the dying seconds, specifically in the 90+4 minute, the Pharaoh celebrated in the manner of his late teammate Diogo Jota. After the match ended, Liverpool fans lit up the stands with chants for the late Portuguese player Jota, who died along with his brother in a tragic car accident in Spain. Record-breaking Salah extended his record as the player with the most goals scored in the opening round of the Premier League (10 goals). He also became the player with the most goals scored (both goals and assists) in Premier League history, at 15. Salah increased his tally at Anfield to 106 goals, making him the second-highest scorer at a single stadium in the history of the competition, equaling Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero's record of 106 goals at the Etihad Stadium. Topping this list is former Arsenal star Thierry Henry, who scored 114 goals at Highbury, the Gunners' former home, now known as the Emirates.
