Gen Z designer's warning over young peoples' Temu, Shein obsession: ‘The cost builds'

The cost of living crisis has made most people reevaluate their spending, and a young Aussie has pointed out the common cheap act that is costing us more in the long run.
Maddie Langshaw, 26, was earning more than $100,000 working full-time in social media and marketing when she decided to start her slow fashion brand Audrey Atelier.

It wasn't just her love of fashion that spurred on the decision — she said she also came to the realization fast fashion was a rort.
'It feels cheap in that exact moment but the cost builds,' she told news.com.au.

'Whether it's the constant need to replace poor quality items, or the environmental damage, or just the mental clutter of owning too much that doesn't mean anything.'

Ms Langshaw said the danger with embracing fast fashion was you were always left wanting to buy more.
'It encourages this mindset of constant consumption, where clothes lose all meaning. It's not fashion, it's waste,' she said.
'It's also emotionally draining, because it keeps us in a loop of wanting more but never feeling truly satisfied.'
The fashion designer understands the perils of fast fashion because she's been a consumer in the past.

'I definitely fell into it in the past, buying things just because they were cheap or trendy. But over time, the charm completely wore off,' she said.

'The clothes didn't last, and honestly, I didn't feel like me in them. Now, my wardrobe is 90 per cent thrifted or second-hand.
'If I do buy something new, it takes me at least five or six rounds of research. I want to know who made it, what it's made of, and whether it's something I'll love long-term.'

Ms Langshaw argued that fast fashion created the illusion that more was better and clothes were disposable.
'It's a trap that keeps us buying and never feeling fulfilled. Once you shift the mindset out of it, you save more money long term and invest in pieces that you have forever,' she said.
She's also had some horror experiences with fast fashion, where the lack of quality led to flat-out wardrobe fails.
'I've had seams unravel after one wear, things shrink beyond saving, and fabrics pill within days,' she said.
'Once, I wore a dress to dinner and the hem literally came undone mid-meal. I remember thinking, 'Why am I putting my money and energy into clothes that don't respect me back?'' she said.
'I have removed the majority of the fast fashion brands from my wardrobe due to this, the fact they don't ever last infuriates me, and over time I spend the same for less cost per wear thrifting.'

Ms Langshaw isn't the only one rethinking how she's spending her money on clothes — and she wouldn't have started her business if she was.
Her marketing background helped her notice a big shift in consumer habits, with Aussies being more 'conscious' about where they spent their money.
'I think there's this amazing shift happening. Fashion isn't just about the look anymore, it's about the story,' she said.
'Conscious shoppers are choosing meaning over mass production.'

Ms Langshaw's been thrilled but unsurprised to see how shoppers have embraced her brand Audrey Atelier, where a blazer might cost $150 instead of $30 from a retail chain, but it is created to last.
'Even with tighter budgets, people want to feel good about what they're buying; they want pieces that last, feel considered, and come with a story,' she said.
'It's not about buying more, it's about buying better. Audrey Atelier connects with that craving for intention.
'It's a small, quiet revolution, and I'm so proud to be part of it. I have had overwhelming support from the community, with most of the buyers saying they want to support small, slower fashion.'

An Australian mum of two is urging parents to apply for Centrelink's paid parental leave early in case they run into difficulties. She said one 'common mistake' meant she nearly missed out on $15,000 worth of payments. Newcastle mum Lexi was initially denied a claim for paid parental leave when she applied following the birth of her son. The 26-year-old told Yahoo Finance she and her husband had been "counting on" the money and were 'gutted' to find out they weren't eligible. It wasn't until she spoke to a friend a few weeks later that she realised she had mistakenly ticked a box to apply for both paid parental leave and the family tax benefit. Due to a mix-up, she was denied both payments when she should have still been eligible for paid parental leave. '[It] said your claim has been denied because your husband earns too much money. That was all I received.' Lexi said she contacted Centrelink and was told to apply again and this time only apply for paid parental leave. Luckily, her application was approved the second time around.'By the time that all happened and by the time I got approved, my son was about five months at that point,' she said. 'I did get back pay from a certain date of my application. So I still ended up with 18 weeks.' Lexi said she could have missed out on $15,000 worth of paid parental leave payments had she not gone back to Centrelink and queried her claim. While she and her husband had budgeted to live off one income, she said receiving the parental leave payments still made a "big difference" for their finances. "We were able to put some more money on our home loan and we were able to take a bit of a breath and incorporate some of our very little luxuries back again," she said. While this situation happened in 2022, Lexi said she later claimed paid parental leave again following the birth of her daughter last year and was 'extra cautious' to make sure she did everything correctly. Lexi recently shared a video about her experience online, which has amassed tens of thousands of views, with many people saying similar things had happened to them. The Newcastle mum said she'd encourage people to start on their applications early to make sure they had time to fix any mistakes. Services Australia allows most people to submit a pre-birth claim up to three months before their baby is due. This can be done online and you'll need a Centrelink online account linked to myGov. 'Then if there is a problem with your application, you've got time to fix and adjust it,' Lexi told Yahoo Finance. 'If you are denied the first time, make an appointment at your local Centrelink, which is what I did. 'I made the appointment to make sure that I did everything correctly with my application, and while it did take a little bit more of my time, it meant that everything was correct.' Services Australia general manager Hank Jongen said there were payments and services available to help people taking time off work and while they were raising their kids. 'You don't need to submit a separate claim for Parental Leave Pay and Family Tax Benefit if you want to claim both,' Jongen told Yahoo Finance. 'The payments have separate eligibility criteria, in particular, different income tests, so what you are eligible for depends on your circumstances. You may be eligible for one, both or neither.' Services Australia has information about eligibility here, but Jongen said it was important people don't self-assess. 'When you are completing your claim online, you can select what payments you want us to assess you for, and we'll check your eligibility,' Jongen said. 'We'll let you know the outcome of your claim by sending you a letter to your myGov inbox. 'If you don't agree with the outcome of your claim, you can ask us for an explanation or to review our decision.' Parental Leave Pay is available to eligible working parents to take time off to care for a newborn or recently adopted child. It is currently $916 a week for 22 weeks and is based on the minimum wage. It will be increased to 24 weeks from July 1, 2025 and 26 weeks from July 1, 2026. From July 1, 2025, it will also include superannuation. You have to meet an income test, a work test and residence rules to be eligible. Family Tax Benefit is a two-part payment for low and middle-income families to help with the day-to-day costs of raising children. The amount you get depends on your situation, including how many kids you have and the level of care. The 21-year-old Aussie, who was the first celebrity contestant confirmed for DWTS season 34, is "very sweet," Karagach tells PEOPLE, so much so that he reminds her of another young sweetheart contestant from last season. "I think he's great. I think he's exactly like Stephen [Nedoroscik]," she says. "He's America's sweetheart. People loved Stephen — he just won everyone's hearts, [he's] so, so kind. And I feel like Robert gives that same energy." Calling Irwin "very family-oriented" and "humble," Karagach, 32, says he's "just a good guy," which is why he reminded her of Nedoroscik, 26. "I think people are going to fall in love with him," she says of Irwin, who she predicts will make it to the championships this season. "He's going to do [well]. I mean, I'm sure he's going to be in the finals," she says. What gives her such faith in the conservationist? "I just feel like personality and popularity plays such a big part, so even if you're not the best dancer, I feel like if you're popular enough and people support you, you'll go really far," she says. Robert is following in his older sister Bindi's footsteps six years later as he joins this season of DWTS. Bindi competed with Derek Hough in 2015 and took home the mirrorball trophy, but Robert told PEOPLE there's "no sibling rivalry" between them. "It's actually really nice. She has just said, 'Go into this and make it your own.' She said it's going to be a completely different experience." "I'm definitely going to be leaning on her a lot, as I have throughout my entire life, to be honest,' he said. 'I think loss brings a family together like nothing else, and for us, for Bindi and myself, we've always had each other's backs through everything, and this is going to be no different. I feel very lucky that I've got her in my corner.' He also recalled cheering his older sister on in the ballroom as a "little 11-year-old kid with my little blonde bowl cut" when she competed a decade ago. 'Now Bindi is going to be there supporting me, and she'll have a lot more dance wisdom than 11-year-old Robert," he said. "I didn't have much to bring to the table, but she does. She's done it.
