Gavin Kilen continues strong weekend in Houston as Vols dominate Rice

Yahoo01-03-2025

HOUSTON, Tx (WATE) – Gavin Kilen started off the Astros Foundation College Classic with two home runs against Oklahoma State. The Louisville transfer continued his strong weekend with another pair of home runs against Rice as the Vols dominated the Owls 13-3. Kilen finished 4-of-5 with two homers, a triple and a double; he was just a single shy of hitting for the cycle.
The Vols offense took advantage of shaky pitching from Rice early. Dean Curley and Gavin Kilen both reached on walks, and then a double steal allowed Curley to score and Kilen to advance to third. After Owls pitcher Blaine Brown walked Levi Clark and Andrew Fischer, Rice made a pitching change.
However, it didn't matter. An Owls throwing error allowed Kilen to cross home to make it 2-0 Tennessee. A Manny Marin sacrifice fly capped off a three-run first inning for the Vols.
Marcus Phillips got the start for Tennessee on the mound. Rice quickly loaded the bases on a walk and back-to-back singles. A wild pitch from Phillips got the Owls on the board as they cut into the deficit, 3-1 in the bottom of the first. Phillips recorded his second strikeout of the frame to get out of the jam and prevent any further damage.
Tennessee's offense got back to work in the second. With two outs, Kilen doubled toward left field and Hunter Ensley brought him home on an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-1. Following an Andrew Fischer walk, Levi Clark blew the game open with a three-run homer into the right field stands to make it a 7-1 Tennessee advantage. It marked the freshman's fourth home-run of the season.
After allowing a run in the first inning, Phillips responded with a 1-2-3 frame in the second, including two strikeouts. He had the same result in the third.
Gavin Kilen hit two home runs in the opening game of the Astros Foundation College Classic against Oklahoma State. The Louisville transfer continued his strong weekend with a solo shot in the top of the fourth to extend Tennessee's lead to 8-1. It marked his fourth-straight game with a homer and fifth home-run in the past four games.
Brayden Sharp took over for Phillips on the mound in the bottom of the fifth. Phillips ended the day with eight strikeouts and allowed one run on five hits in 4.2 innings.
Sharp entered the game with one Rice runner on second with two outs. He struck out the final batter to escape the inning without any damage.
If three home runs in two games wasn't enough, Kilen smashed his fourth long ball of the weekend, and second of the afternoon, to give Tennessee a 9-1 lead in the sixth.
Nic Abraham replaced Sharp on the mound in the seventh. Sharp didn't allow a hit or a run and struck out two in 1.1 innings of work.
After a wild pitch and an error, Abraham allowed a single to give the Owls two runners on. A groundout to short allowed a runner to score and cut the lead to 9-2. Vitello decided he had seen enough of Abraham, and Michael Sharman came out of the bullpen to replace him.
Sharman immediately gave up a double down the right field line, bringing home another run for the Owls as they cut the advantage to 9-3.
The Vols started the eighth inning with two straight walks. Kilen's huge weekend at the plate continued as he cleared the bases with a two-run triple to extend Tennessee's lead back up to 11-3. Hunter Ensley then followed up with an RBI single to bring home Kilen to make it a 12-3 ballgame.
Tennessee added another run in the top of the ninth, courtesy of Stone Lawless. Lawless sent a double to center field and Colby Backus scored after he reached on a walk.
UP NEXT: The Vols close out play in Houston against Arizona on Sunday at 11:05 a.m.

Riley Gaines reveals gymnast sister's reaction to Simone Biles' personal attack

Riley Gaines revealed in the latest episode of her podcast what her sister thought of Simone Biles' personal attack on her as the debate over trans athletes in women's and girls' sports escalated. Neely Gaines is an elite-level gymnast and was a Tennessee state champion in 2023. Riley Gaines spoke on OutKick's "Gaines for Girls" podcast about how they would work out together early in the mornings even with her younger sister's hectic schedule. Gaines said that her sister is a huge fan of Biles but the Olympic great's social media posts aimed at the former NCAA All-American swimmer stunned her. "So, I saw her this morning and she almost had tears in her eyes with this internal dilemma that she was facing," Gaines said. "She looks up to me so much as I would imagine many younger sisters do to their older sisters. She always tells me, 'I want to be just like you.' She's as fit as can be. "… But she loves Simone Biles and she saw me this morning and she's like, 'Riley, like, I thought you guys were on the same team. I thought you and Simone were fighting for the same things and amplifying and promoting the idea of women in sports what this looks like.' And she said, 'Clearly, you guys are not.' She said it was all her gym could talk about – how awful Simone Biles treated me and the message that she sent to those young girls. It breaks my heart." Biles went after Gaines as the fairness in women's sports advocate reacted to a transgender pitcher competing in the Minnesota state softball championship. "@Riley_Gaines_ You're truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser," Biles wrote on X. "You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports!! "But instead… You bully them… One things for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around!!!!!" Gaines responded to Biles' attack. "This is so disappointing. My take is the least controversial take on the planet," Gaines wrote in response to Biles' post. "Simone Biles being a male-apologist at the expense of young girls' dreams? Didn't have that on my bingo card. "Maybe she could compete in pommel horse and rings in 2028." Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Cavaliers' Darius Garland has toe surgery, out 4-5 months

Cavaliers guard Darius Garland had surgery Monday on the injured left big toe that hampered him during Cleveland's exit from the playoffs. The Cavaliers said the procedure was performed by Dr. Nicholas Strasser at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, in consultation with team physician Dr. James Rosneck and Dr. Bob Anderson. The All-Star guard missed the final two games of the regular season and four games during the playoffs with the injury, which was described as a sprain. "Definitely wasn't myself. It was pretty uncomfortable but trying to do everything to win the game. It was frustrating because I wasn't 100 percent," Garland said after the Cavaliers lost to the Indiana Pacers in five games in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Garland is expected to spend 4 to 5 months going through a progression of treatment and rehabilitation before resuming basketball activities by the start of training camp. Garland averaged 20.6 points and 6.7 assists during the regular season to help the Cavs finish atop the Eastern Conference. In just five playoff games, he dropped to 18 points and 5.2 assists per game, and while Cleveland won the two games against the Miami Heat that Garland sat out due to his toe, he also missed two of the four games that the Cavs dropped to the Pacers in the conference semifinals. Tyler Adams to miss US-Switzerland friendly because of foot injury

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — U.S. midfielder Tyler Adams will miss Tuesday night's friendly against Switzerland because of a foot injury. 'I hope it's not a big issue,' coach Mauricio Pochettino said Monday. 'I think we can manage in a good way and rest him a few days and then see if he can be ready for the Gold Cup.' Adams played the second half of Saturday's 2-1 loss to Turkey. The Americans open the CONCACAF Gold Cup against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday. They already are missing are Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Antonee Robinson, Sergiño Dest, Yunus Musah, Folarin Balogun and Gio Reyna. Some are hurt, some want time off and some will be at the Club World Cup. The U.S. will be trying to avoid its first four-game losing streak since dropping five straight in 2007. Pochettino praised goalkeeper Matt Freese, who made his debut against Turkey in place of Matt Turner, the U.S. starter since 2022. Turner did not play for Crystal Palace after March 1. 'He was very, very good,' Pochettino said. 'Things that he needs to prove? Of course. But he needs to play and needs games with the national team. ... He has amazing potential. Yes, it's a good competition for us, now to discover than he can cope with the pressure to play in front of the national team.' ___ AP soccer:
