Boks score big — and so do Nelson Mandela Bay businesses

Daily Maverick13-07-2025
Gqeberha's hospitality scene came alive this past weekend as the Springboks delivered a 45-0 win over Italy — and a major win for local bars, restaurants and fan parks. From packed beachfront joints to shuttle services ferrying fans, it was the Bay's biggest sporting boost since the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
Beyond the 45-0 drubbing of the Italians at the NMB Stadium on Saturday, the Springboks brought a week of gees, good vibes and a major cash injection for the local hospitality industry.
Some of the Bay's most popular establishments said they had not seen this kind of support for a sporting event since the 2010 Fifa World Cup, and bookings were made weeks in advance to secure seats in front of the big screens.
Some rugby fans might have enjoyed the gees a little too much. At least 12 rugby fans had a less than ideal weekend after they were arrested for drunk driving when leaving the stadium on Saturday night.
Business bonanza
Barney's Tavern, a beachfront institution in Gqeberha, had a bumper weekend, with the first fans arriving from as early as 8am on Saturday.
Owner Craig Mittens said the rugby season was crucial for business in the winter months, and while they expected good support, this past weekend had been exceptional.
'I don't think we've seen this kind of business since the 2010 World Cup. We had guys flying into Gqeberha stopping by for breakfast at 8am, and the last customers walked out of here after 1am on Sunday.
'And at 8am on Sunday, we were almost packed again as guys stopped by for breakfast before catching their flights back home. It was crazy.'
Mittens and his team ran a shuttle service that transported 120 people between Barney's and the stadium before and after the game.
While he still needs to crunch the numbers to determine exactly how good business was on Saturday, Mittens said he would not be surprised if they reached record-setting figures.
In Good Company, a hospitality collective based in Gqeberha, also believed they reached record numbers as their establishments showed an increase in activity for the entire week leading up to the Springbok-Italy clash.
'We had bookings coming in for the rugby about a month in advance, and even our stores not showing the rugby were packed. It just goes to show the ripple effect that an event like a Springbok game can have on business,' operations manager Anle Marais said.
With one of its beachfront restaurants, Something Good, only a stone's throw from the Springboks' hotel, Marais said they had fans coming and going the whole week as Siya Kolisi and his teammates frequented the establishment.
Bridge Street Brewery collaborated with Castle Lager as an official fan park and was bursting at the seams until closing time at 2am.
Meanwhile, despite not even having TVs, business at Hello! Beach and Hello! It's Me Walmer was also booming.
'Some people came for a bite before going to watch the game, while we definitely saw some wives come out while their husbands were at the rugby. The knock-on effect of these big events is immeasurable,' Marais noted.
Safety and security
Director of Traffic and Licensing in Nelson Mandela Bay, Warren Prins, applauded establishments that offered shuttle services to and from the stadium as it helped to reduce the number of inebriated drivers.
'From the Metro Police, we had upwards of 40 officers manning 22 points around the stadium before, during and after the game. We also had officials at the event to help other law-enforcement agencies to monitor and manage the crowd.'
Prins said besides a handful of petty crimes such as pickpocketing, the event was a major success from a safety and security point of view.
'No major incidents, especially violent incidents, were reported to us, and we arrested 12 people for driving under the influence after the match. Overall, I believe the crowds were generally well-behaved and we saw little need for serious intervention,' Prins said. DM

Former rugby player fined for failing to submit tax returns

The Paarl magistrate's court has fined former Springbok rugby player Schalk Burger Sr and his company Welbedacht Wines for failing to submit VAT, pay-as-you-earn (PAYE) and income tax returns. The court fined the company R6,000 on each count of failing to submit a VAT201 return for February 2023 and a monthly employer declaration return for March 2023. Burger, 69, was convicted on 14 counts, which included failure to submit a VAT201 return for February 2023, a monthly employer declaration (EMP201) return for March2023 and IT12 income tax returns for the period 2011 to 2022. He was fined R6,000 or 12 months imprisonment on each count, of which R2,000 or four months imprisonment was suspended for five years. 'This amounts to a payable fine of R56,000, or 112 months imprisonment and a further R28,000 or 56 months imprisonment suspended for five years on specific conditions,' National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said. Burger successfully requested the court to grant him a deferred fine and was ordered to pay the R56,000 in instalments of R6,000 per month and a final payment of R8,000. The accused entered into a plea and sentence agreement with the state. The court confirmed the agreement and convicted and sentenced him accordingly. According to the agreement, Burger admitted that Welbedacht Wines was registered for VAT and PAYE at the Paarl office of the South African Revenue Services. Burger failed to submit the returns on behalf of the company. In addition, Burger, in his personal capacity, was registered for income tax at the Paarl Sars office . 'Following his successful registration for e-filing in 2011, he failed to submit his IT12 income tax returns for the tax years of 2011 to 2022. This was despite Sars' best efforts to encourage all taxpayers to submit their income tax returns.' It was only after the institution of a prosecution and his being summoned to appear in court that he submitted all outstanding returns relating to himself and his company, and both are currently tax compliant. 'The accused's son, Christiaan Francois Burger, was on July 21 also convicted and sentenced on 12 counts of failing to submit his IT12 personal income tax returns for the 2011 to 2022 period.' The 40-year-old was sentenced to a fine of R48,000 or 96 months imprisonment, and a further R24,000 or 48 months imprisonment, suspended for five years on conditions. The NPA said the sentence sent a strong message of deterrence. 'With the filing season for income tax currently under way, this is a clear message that failure by persons and juristic persons to file their Income Tax returns will not be tolerated. It is a serious offence that impacts negatively on the fiscus,' he said.

Springboks Fassi, Ox Nche pay tribute to 'remarkable' Grant Williams

On Saturday, Grant Williams starts at Ellis Park two years after suffering a horrible concussion in the first minute of a Rugby Championship match against Argentina. Williams' Sharks teammates, Ox Nche and Aphelele Fassi, are not surprised that the scrumhalf is returning to the scene of the crime — for a Championship match against Australia —a stronger, better player. 'Grant has had a challenging time with injuries — this season he has battled with a neck problem, but I have seen how much he has grown as a person,' Nche said. 'He strives to be better, he focuses on small things, and continually tries to improve. 'Grant is very important to the team,' Nche added. 'He is probably one of the hardest workers in the squad. He is becoming a good leader, especially for his position, where the scrumhalf is an important leader. 'I think he has grown into the position. He has suffered a lot of injuries, and it is so cool to see him healthy and playing this Test match against the Wallabies. Fassi added, 'Grant has had an up-and-down season caused by injury. His mental strength is one of his biggest weapons. 'To be able to recover from injury and get into the Springbok camp, work on his neck and be able to be playing again for the Springboks is remarkable. 'His first Test this year was against Georgia to mark an excellent comeback (from injury in the United Rugby Championship),' Fassi said. 'Grant is a strong weapon for the Springboks. Being strong is what he does week in, week out. I'm thrilled for him that he has overcome adversity and is playing this big Test against the Wallabies.'

Springboks' Ox Nche: Wallabies present a tough challenge

Despite being favourites, Springboks prop Ox Nche warns of a tough challenge from the rising Wallabies in their Rugby Championship opener at Ellis Park on Saturday. Picture: Michael Sherman/IOL Australia, though, seem to be on the up as their recent series against the British and Irish Lions seems to indicate. Though Australia lost the series 2-1, they did win their final encounter in Sydney on August 2. In fact, the last time the Wallabies beat the Boks came in 2022 in Adelaide. Since then, the Springboks have run out comprehensive victors. The last time Australia beat South Africa at the famed venue in the heart of Johannesburg came 62 years ago. Despite the Springboks being overwhelming favourites for their Rugby Championship opener against the Wallabies at Ellis Park on Saturday, South Africa prop Ox Nche says their opposition will be no pushover. Nche Highlights Australia's Rising Form Ahead of Test Match Against South Africa 'We saw the last two British and Irish Lions Tests, how well they started to gel together,' said Nche. 'I think they will definitely be looking forward to this Test and I think they will be up for it. I think they will start to focus on getting all those pieces and gel together.' While South Africa top the current World Rugby rankings to go with their 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cup titles, Australia are down in sixth. Still, Nche insisted their foes were back on the rise. 'They have improved a lot because there are a lot of new good combinations and a lot of players that have also played together for a while. I think they are going to be a good challenge. 'I definitely think their setpiece has improved a lot. We saw two British and Irish Tests, they have good combinations as I said. 'You have a guy like Will Skelton and Taniela Tupou and Angus Bell, you saw how big they were for them and as well. They have a very solid pack, even the guys coming off the bench. Come lineout time as well, they're gelling. They compete very well, they win most of their balls. I think they've actually gotten the right combinations together.' The match kicks off at 5.10pm. @Michael_Sherman IOL Sport
