TRAIN CRASH Train derails & overturns after crashing into lorry at level crossing leaving 'many injured' in 'major disaster' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MANY people have been injured after a passenger train derailed and overturned in southern Denmark. Emergency services rushed to the scene after the train, heading to Sønderborg, collided with a lorry at a level crossing between Tinglev and Kliplev. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Several people were injured after passenger train derailed in near Tinglev, Denmark Credit: Google Police in the Southern Jutland region said on X: "We are present at a train accident with several injured people near Tinglev. "We need peace and quiet at the scene and unauthorised persons must stay away from the scene." "We will announce further information via press releases as soon as possible," they added. It is still unclear exactly how many people were hurt or what caused the derailment. Danish rail authority Banedanmark told local outlet BT there are 'many injured' in the incident, which has been described by a Fire and Rescue South Jutland response leader as 'a major disaster.' The Copenhagen-to-Sønderborg service, which was travelling via Fredericia, came off the tracks close to Denmark's border with Germany. Police are using dogs and drones in their investigation, while TV 2 reports that two medical helicopters are at the scene. Officers say they are 'massively present' in the area. Banedanmark have also sent an investigation team to determine the cause of the crash. Railway operator DSB said all journeys on the route have been halted and there will be no trains on the stretch for the rest of Friday or all of Saturday. Andreas Hald, press manager at Banedanmark, said: 'We have received reports that a train has derailed between Kliplev and Tinglev.' 'We are working on getting train buses to run on the route,' DSB added. Shocked residents described hearing and smelling the aftermath of the crash. Johnny Balling Nielsen, a resident near the scene, told BT: 'We heard a bang. 'Shortly after, we could smell a strange, metallic smell. We can hear all the sirens and what's going on.' CCYP summer expansion leads to drop in anti-social behaviour
Cwmbran Centre for Young People (CCYP) extended its opening hours over the summer, thanks to funding from Gwent Police's Safer Streets programme. This funding allowed the centre, which usually opens only in the evenings, to run open access activities three days a week. Outreach staff were also more present around Cwmbran town centre, encouraging young people to engage with the centre's sessions and facilities. Since July, when the initiative began, the CCYP has seen an increase of around 40 young people attending each week. The summer-long programme includes themed activities, team-building exercises, creative projects, and problem-solving tasks designed to inspire and challenge participants. Councillor Fiona Cross, Torfaen Council's executive member for communities, said: "This initiative is a fantastic example of how partnership working can create real opportunities for young people in our communities. "By offering safe, engaging, and supportive environments, we're not only reducing the risk of anti-social behaviour but also helping young people build confidence, develop new skills, and feel a stronger sense of belonging." The centre, open every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12pm to 4pm, has a gaming room, craft room, cookery kitchen, and an activity room with a pool table, foosball, and ping-pong. Laura Ellis, CCYP centre manager, said: "We're proud to provide young people with a safe, inclusive space where they can express themselves, connect with others, and feel supported. "Thanks to additional funding, attendance at CCYP has grown steadily. "It's a clear sign of the value young people place on the centre and the positive difference it's making in their lives." The initiative is being delivered in partnership with Torfaen Council's Community Safety team and supported by Animals Interactive, Gwent Police, The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC), Cwmbran Community Council, and Cwmbran Town Centre Management. The centre also sees Torfaen sports, health, and fitness attend every Friday from 12pm to 1.30pm to deliver fitness sessions. For more information about the centre, follow @CCYP on Facebook or call the centre on 01633 875851.

At least 26 dead and a dozen missing after boat capsizes near Italian island
BOAT HORROR At least 26 dead and a dozen missing after boat capsizes near Italian island Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) AT least 26 people are dead and a dozen missing after a packed migrant boat capsized off Italy's Lampedusa island. Sixty survivors were pulled from the water and taken to a Lampedusa reception centre, with four rushed to hospital, according to the Italian Red Cross and UN agencies. Five ships, two aircraft and a helicopter were deployed in the ongoing search for more survivors. The coastguard said the death toll remains 'provisional and being updated.' Survivor accounts suggest between 92 and 97 people were on board when the boat departed Libya. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said the group originally set off on two vessels from the Tripoli area. When one began taking on water, all passengers were crammed into a fibreglass boat which later capsized in international waters due to overloading. 'It is not immediately known how long the migrants had been at sea,' Lampedusa mayor Filippo Mannino said, adding the tragedy happened 'presumably at dawn.' Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, who has made tackling illegal immigration a key priority, vowed to keep fighting 'unscrupulous traffickers' by 'preventing irregular departures' and 'managing migration flows.' She said: 'When a tragedy like this occurs, with the deaths of dozens of people in the waters of the Mediterranean, a strong sense of dismay and compassion arises in all of us. 'That today's tragedy occurred despite a ready and operational international response warns us that the necessary rescue effort is not sufficient and, above all, does not address the root causes of this tragic problem.' So far this year, 675 migrants have died making the perilous central Mediterranean crossing — not including the latest sinking. In the past decade, almost 24,500 people have died or gone missing on the route, the IOM says. More to follow...
