Broadcom shares jump as HSBC lifts stock to Buy on underestimated ASIC potential
-- HSBC has upgraded Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) shares to Buy from Hold, citing a sharp upward revision in its ASIC revenue estimates and fading concerns over wireless and VMware headwinds. The bank also raised its target price (TP) to $400 from $240, representing a 58% upside from Monday's closing price Broadcom shares jumped more than 3% by 10:14 ET on Tuesday. HSBC analysts said their earlier cautious stance on the stock was based on a lack of visibility in Broadcom's ASIC pipeline and potential wireless share loss to Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). 'We now believe its ASIC revenues will significantly beat market expectations from better ASIC project visibility as well as average selling price (ASP) pricing power,' said Frank Lee, Global Head of Tech Hardware & Semi Research at HSBC. The analyst estimates that Broadcom's ASIC revenue will rise to $28.4 billion in fiscal year 2026 (FY26) and $42.8 billion in FY27, which is 42% and 69% above consensus estimates, respectively. Lee highlighted that hyperscaler capital expenditure (capex) is increasingly shifting toward custom silicon, driving demand for Broadcom's ASICs. 'We now expect ASIC blended ASPs to increase 92% y-o-y in FY26e and another 25% in FY27e,' the note added. The pricing uplift is underpinned by a shift to larger die sizes and newer memory technologies, as ASICs move toward specs comparable to AI GPUs. HSBC expects Broadcom to have up to seven ASIC customers by FY27, compared with just three at Marvell (NASDAQ:MRVL) and one at Alchip. Concerns around Apple's in-sourcing of wireless chips have also eased. HSBC now projects that 88% of Apple products will still use Broadcom-designed parts in FY26, leading the bank to revise its wireless revenue forecasts higher and bring them in line with consensus. Similarly, VMware revenue growth is expected to remain intact through FY26, as customer transitions to subscription models continue. 'Broadcom continues to move VMware customers to subscription models for another 18 months at least so we do not expect any imminent slowdown,' Lee points out. With respect to valuation, HSBC assigns a 32x target price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple for FY27, reflecting a 10% premium to Broadcom's peak historical P/E over the past three years. 'The ASIC revenue opportunity can drive upside and help re-rate the stock towards a new peak P/E,' the bank said. 'With an implied upside to our TP of 58%, we upgrade the stock to a Buy (from Hold).' Next-Gen Chips Spurs Industry Shift
Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) and MediaTek are lining up 2-nanometer system-on-chips for a late-2026 debut, riding a surge in on-device AI demand and built by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (NYSE:TSM). Counterpoint Research forecasts that Apple will shift over 80% of its product lineup to 3 nm this year, setting the stage for an even swifter 2 nm rollout. Counterpoint's Parv Sharma says the push toward 3 nm and 2 nm nodes is fueled by the need for faster AI inference and better power efficiency on smartphones, though it lifts wafer costs and raises total semiconductor content per device. TSMC plans tape-outs for 2 nm in H2 2025 and mass production in 2026, paving the way for flagship A-series, Snapdragon and Dimensity chips off the same line. TSMC's foundry dominanceowning roughly two-thirds of the market in Q4 2024 and an estimated 87% of sub-5 nm SoC shipments next yearshould extend to 89% by 2028, says Counterpoint director Brady Wang. That control gives TSMC and its chip-designer partners a clear path to deliver advanced-node scale, though rising node complexity may pressure yields and enlarge capex requirements. Why It Matters: The transition to 2 nm will define the next wave of smartphone performance, battery life and AI features, with TSMC's scale and Apple's design muscle setting the competitive bar. Report finds including limited right to sue in new Alberta auto insurance model could cost drivers up to $136 annually
Province's Care-First system unlikely to deliver premium savings for drivers unless changes are made EDMONTON, ON, June 24, 2025 /CNW/ - A new analysis from consulting firm MNP finds that the government's intention to maintain the ability to sue in Alberta's Care-First auto insurance model could add up to $136 to required premiums annually. In light of the findings, Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) is urging the government to resist pressure to keep tort access in the new system and instead stay focused on ensuring victims receive the highest level of care to support their recovery. "Litigation in Alberta's auto insurance system creates significant costs for Alberta drivers. Removing this, to improve affordability and care, is the main reason the government decided to transition to its Care-First model," said Aaron Sutherland, Vice-President, Pacific and Western, Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC). "The provincial government designs and mandates the auto insurance products that insurers must sell. No other province with a care-based system permits the ability to sue as envisioned in Alberta because of the significant costs it adds for drivers, while doing nothing to improve care for those injured in collisions." As the Alberta government moves forward with the final design of its new Care-First auto insurance system, it has indicated that those injured in collisions will retain the ability to sue when the at-fault driver is guilty of select Criminal Code and Traffic Safety Act violations, as well as to recover out-of-pocket expenses beyond what is covered by their own insurance policy. IBC commissioned MNP to explore the impact this would have on required premiums. The firm's findings can be found here. After years of escalating legal costs and government-imposed rate interventions, Alberta's auto insurance market is in crisis. Soaring repair costs, inflation and tariffs are only adding to the pressure. Now, with the government's intention to allow tort access to continue as a cost pressure, the success of Alberta's Care-First model is at risk—eroding the savings that drivers could see when the new system comes into effect in 18 months. "Drivers deserve an auto insurance system that they can count on when they need it," added Sutherland. "IBC and its members are eager to work with the government to stabilize the system today and ensure the new system brings drivers savings and the access to the best medical benefits so that they can recover." The Alberta government's Automobile Insurance Rate Board (AIRB) recently published new data on cost pressures impacting driver premiums over the next year, all of which are growing well in excess of the current 7.5% auto insurance rate cap: Legal costs are increasing 9.7% Accident benefit costs are increasing 11.9% Over the last year, costs for vehicle damage coverages were projected to increase by more than 15%. The AIRB also highlighted that last year auto insurers lost 20 cents for every dollar sold in premiums due to the government's ongoing rate cap. This is creating significant strain on the availability of coverage for drivers today and on the ability of the Care-First system to deliver savings for drivers in the future. "The Alberta government is trying to deliver significant savings under the new system, but current auto insurance rates are under tremendous pressure," said Sutherland. "The insurance industry supports the government's goal of making auto insurance more affordable for Alberta drivers. But to do that, a significant course correction is needed."
