The Toronto Argonauts scored a much-needed victory when they won the front end of a back-to-back with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Six days later, the two participants in last season's Grey Cup meet again when Toronto travels to Winnipeg.
The Argonauts posted a 31-17 victory at home on Saturday behind Nick Arbuckle's 316 passing yards and two touchdown tosses.
It was a big win for Toronto (2-5), which needs to string together some victories if it hopes to successfully defend its CFL title. The Argos beat the Blue Bombers 41-24 in last year's championship clash.
'Every win is important, especially when it ends a losing streak,' Arbuckle said after the club ended a two-game slide. 'It's a critical part of the season. We're trying to turn things around and build some momentum, so it was important.'
Arbuckle has passed for 2,007 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions this year. His time as the starter will continue after 2023 CFL Most Outstanding Player Chad Kelly was placed on the six-game injured list last weekend due to the serious leg injury he sustained late last season.
Winnipeg quarterback Zach Collaros threw two picks and was pulled at halftime against Toronto. The two-time CFL Most Outstanding Player failed to finish the previous contest against the Calgary Stampeders due to a neck injury and has been ruled out of the rematch after aggravating the injury.
Chris Streveler will draw the start. He completed 11 of 18 passes for 148 yards and one touchdown last week.
'We like what he can do,' Blue Bombers coach Mike O'Shea said of Streveler. 'We like his leadership. He steps in there and he's a pro and he wants to do very well for his teammates. That part of it is so important to him.'
Winnipeg (3-3) has dropped its past three games by a total of 56 points, but star running back Brady Oliveira cautioned that there is plenty of time for the club to find its stride.
After all, the Blue Bombers lost their first four games last season and were later 2-6 before ending up in the Grey Cup.
'Right now is not the time to panic and not the time to start freaking out or worrying about the three losses in a row,' said Oliveira, who had 82 yards on 13 carries in last week's contest. 'There's still so much time left. We're going to start clicking and it's just a matter of time, and once we start clicking, who says we can't go on a nice little run, a nice little heater -- we did it last year.
'Again, it's different this year to last year, but we've done it before, so why can't it be done again this year?'

Anastasija Sevastova ousts two-time defending champ Jessica Pegula in Montreal

(Photo credit: David Kirouac-Imagn Images) Anastasija Sevastova saved nine of 13 break points on Friday while recording a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over two-time defending champion Jessica Pegula in the third round of the National Bank Open in Montreal on Friday. Sevastova of Latvia had a first-serve percentage of 71 percent while rallying to upend the third-seeded Pegula. Sevastova, 35, had a hard time explaining what happened. 'Somehow, I was down 2-0 in the second set and started to play better and better,' Sevastova said. 'Third set, I played really good. Just trying to stay on the court as long as possible.' Pegula appeared to be sailing when she won eight of the first 11 games. But Sevastova won the next four games to jumpstart her comeback. After winning the second set, Sevastova lost the opening game of the third set before steamrolling Pegula the rest of the way. Pegula was perplexed over her collapse. 'It was a strange match for me,' Pegula said. 'I felt like I was in complete control, and then I played a couple of terrible games.' Sevastova was ranked as high as No. 11 in 2018 before injuries hampered her career. She was ranked No. 396 entering Friday's match. In 2018, Sevastova advanced to the U.S. Open semifinals before losing to eventual runner-up Serena Williams. She will next face the winner of that 2018 U.S. Open -- Naomi Osaka. Osaka, a former No. 1 player, moved into the fourth round with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over No. 22 Jalena Ostapenko of Latvia. Osaka of Japan had five aces and converted 6 of 9 break-point opportunities. Ostapenko trailed 3-1 in the second set when she attempted to rally. She moved within one game before Osaka closed it out. No. 6 Madison Keys struggled early before recovering for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Catherine McNally. No. 16 seed Clara Tauson of Switzerland notched a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Yuliia Starodubtseva. No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek of Poland plays Germany's Eva Lys on Friday night.

Blue Jays put OF George Springer on concussion list

(Photo credit: Daniel Kucin Jr.-Imagn Images) The Toronto Blue Jays placed slugging outfielder George Springer on the 7-day concussion list Friday, four nights after he was hit in the head with a pitch. The move was made before Friday's game against the Kansas City Royals. It is retroactive to Tuesday. Springer was plunked by Orioles right-hander Kade Strowd during Monday's 11-4 loss to Baltimore. Springer was face down on the ground for more than a minute, but he remained alert before eventually being helped off the field. Springer, 35, is batting .291 with 18 homers and 57 RBIs in 101 games this season -- the four-time All-Star's best showing as a hitter since 2021. Toronto also activated center fielder Daulton Varsho (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list. Varsho last played for the Blue Jays on May 31 when he was injured while trying to leg out a triple against the Athletics. Varsho, 29, is batting .207 with eight homers and 20 RBIs in 24 games. The Blue Jays also optioned right-hander Paxton Schultz to Triple-A Buffalo. The 27-year-old owns a 4.56 ERA in 12 appearances (two starts) for Toronto this season.

Elks look to slow down the high-flying Tiger-Cats on Saturday

It's expected to be a hot weekend in Edmonton with temperatures set to hit 30 degrees — fitting, as the Elks will welcome the hottest team in the CFL. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats face the Elks at Play Alberta Field at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Elks are 1-5 on the season after having their comeback bid fall short last week in Regina losing 21-18 to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Elks fell behind by a score of 21-4 before scoring 14 straight points in the fourth quarter only to settle for a loss. Quarterback Cody Fajardo will make his second start of the season for the Elks after throwing for 348 yards and two touchdown passes against the Riders. It was the first time this season the Elks had three receivers eclipse the 50 yard mark in Steven Dunbar Jr. (82), Kaion Julien-Grant (69), and Zach Mathis (52). Story continues below advertisement Fajardo says receiving all of the first team reps this week makes him feel more comfortable with the offence. 'There's some plays that I got to see reps with and there's some plays I didn't rep the best but I was able to see it and correct some things,' Fajardo said. The Hamilton defence leads the CFL in interceptions (11), pass knockdowns (30), and tackles for losses (16). On offence, the Tiger-Cats lead the league in average points scored per game (32.1), passing yards per game (316.0), and passing touchdowns (15). The Elks have more injuries to deal with this week as linebacker Nick Anderson (groin), receiver Zach Mathis (back), and linebacker Micheal Brodrique (shoulder) have all been place on the six-game injured list. Defensive end Robbie Smith (elbow) will return. Receiver Binjimen Victor will see his second start of the season. Linebacker Brock Mogensen and Canadian defensive back Jerrell Cummings will added to the active roster. Linebacker Bryce Cosby will come off of the active roster and will be placed on the practice roster.
