Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan: How The Crew Made Hanuman Fly And Other On-Set Stories

Last Updated: Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan was shot in Umargaon, Gujarat. Hanuman's flying scenes used wires and camera tricks, creating magical effects that amazed viewers in the 1980s When the name Ramayan is mentioned, the legendary filmmaker Ramanand Sagar is instantly recalled. His iconic television serial first aired on Doordarshan on January 25, 1987, captivating millions with its 78 episodes until the final broadcast on July 31, 1988. The show's immense popularity broke all viewership records of the time. A Nation Paused For 'Ramayan' Airing every Sunday morning for one hour, the serial was so engrossing that streets would fall silent, resembling a curfew as life came to a halt. Back then, television sets were scarce in neighbourhoods, leading families and neighbours to gather around a single TV to watch the epic tale unfold. Cast That Became Icons The serial starred Arun Govil as Lord Ram and Deepika Chikhalia as Mother Sita; a pair so revered that viewers would bow upon seeing them. Other memorable actors included Dara Singh as Hanuman and Sunil Lahiri as Laxman. The Unique Location: Umargaon, Gujarat Ramanand Sagar chose an extraordinary location to shoot the serial; Umargaon, a scenic town on the Maharashtra-Gujarat border, about 150 km from Mumbai, in the Valsad district of Gujarat. This coastal area, blessed with lush greenery, rivers, sea, and hills, provided the perfect natural backdrop that brought the ancient Ramayan world to life. Creating The Ancient World Of 'Ramayan' To faithfully depict the settings of Ayodhya, Lanka, Mithila, Kishkindha, and Kailash Parvat, wooden sets were meticulously constructed. Prem Sagar, Ramanand's son, once revealed that ' Ramayan might not have been made if we hadn't gone to Umargaon. The natural surroundings truly animated the characters and the story." The cast stayed in Umargaon for nearly two years during filming. The Making Of A Film City Most actors commuted by train from Mumbai to the remote set. Today, Umargaon is home to Swastik Bhumi Studio, a sprawling 27-acre film city. It features elaborate sets such as Kailash Parvat (56,000 sq ft), grand palaces and ancient forts (37,950 sq ft), three markets, a courtroom, and royal chambers. The site even offers 1BHK and 2BHK flats for actors to rent. The Magic Behind Hanuman's Flying Scenes Some of the most memorable sequences showed Dara Singh's Hanuman flying across the sea to Lanka in search of Sita and carrying the mountain with Sanjeevani herbs to cure the fatally injured Laxman. How was this achieved in the late 1980s? The actor was suspended on special wires and belts, while clever camera angles, lighting, and special effects made the scenes look incredibly realistic, astonishing viewers of that era. Gurmeet Choudhary-Debina Bonnerjee recall eloping and marrying secretly at age of 19: ‘We don't recommend it'

Actors Gurmeet Choudhary and Debina Bonnerjee have been quite a celebrated couple on Indian television. And recently, the two have appeared together on the small screen after many years in the Colors TV reality show Pati, Patni, Aur Panga. As the show kicked off this weekend, Gurmeet and Debina spoke to SCREEN about their love story, marriage, and now being parents. Gurmeet recalled the time they got married in a filmy style where they 'almost eloped' and took the plunge. Debina also shared how they had fallen in love much before working together in Ramayan. While Gurmeet and Debina had a traditional wedding in 2011, Gurmeet shared that they have been married for 19 years now. He said, 'In 2006, when we were just 19 years old and we had secretly gotten married, so next year it will be our 20th anniversary. Debina added, 'We were just 19-20 when we took that leap of faith, and jumped into it, and we're glad we landed.' That is why when we were working together, it was fabulous. Later, when we were not even working together, we already knew how it is to be each other's support system. Usually, when you work together and later on take different paths, the problem of relevance arises, but that didn't happen for us. The love began first, and then we acted together.' Gurmeet Choudhary went on to share the time they secretly got married and the initial struggles they faced. He said, 'I have always believed in the concept of soulmates. I am very filmy. We got married also in a filmy way, we eloped from our homes and secretly got married. None of our parents knew. But I sincerely tell everyone not to do this. We don't recommend it. We were blessed that our marriage worked.' A post shared by ColorsTV (@colorstv) 'Usually, a lot of people get influenced; lately, a few of our friends also got inspired and did so, and later it didn't work. We were lucky that we clicked; we both worked very hard, and we knew that if we had gotten married secretly, to make it work, working was very important. We have always been friends with each other, which is why we have been a strong couple,' Gurmeet added. Debina also supported his statement and said, 'God was our parachute, not everybody has that.' Gurmeet also recalled a time when he wasn't working and how Debina supported him. Expressing his feelings for her, Gurmeet said, 'Honestly, I have always loved Debina a lot, and I respect her a lot. When we were young, I saw Debina work when I was not working. Usually, boys struggle to get work, but Debina was doing different projects and earning. That time when we would go to a restaurant, I would feel weird when the waiter would bring the bill to me. I used to wonder when I would start earning, and Debina would always pay the bill. So I have huge respect for her. It is for her that I worked so hard and reached the place where I am today.' Now, Gurmeet and Debina are also blessed with two daughters – Lianna and Divisha. Talking about dealing with parenthood, Debina says, 'We have evolved with time and as parents too. I am a 10.0 version of myself. It's beautiful.' Gurmeet Choudhary added, 'Now, with kids, the way Debina is managing every front has made my respect grow for her. I can touch her feet now, and that would also be less.' On the work front, Gurmeet Choudhary was last seen in Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein Season 2. He is now also working on another OTT show and a film simultaneously; however, the actor couldn't divulge many details about it. One Week Of Kyunki Season 2: Mihir-Tulsi Set Couple Goals, Fans Want No More Affairs

When Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Thi first premiered 25 years ago, Smriti Irani and Amar Upadhyay's on-screen couple of Tulsi Virani and Mihir Virani was pegged as the perfect pair, right next to Ram-Sita from Ramayan. Just like Ram and Sita, life wasn't a bed of roses for TV's OG couple back in the 2000s. A Bit Of OG Kyunki History Pretty much the entire Virani clan was against Tulsi and Mihir's match, except dearest and late Baa, even before the then young couple tied the knot. Mihir's mother Savita was not ready to accept a low-class, simpleton like Tulsi. She wanted Payal, a khandaani ameer for her prince-like son. But their love eventually conquered all. But then Mihir met with a fatal accident and Tulsi, who was pregnant with their first child, had to resort to getting remarried to Anupam Kapadia. Lo and behold, Mihir came back from the dead, on the show, but now had no memory of Tulsi. He and Mandira, Anupam's sister, were sort of a couple then. There were logistical hiccups too as the real Mihir, that is Amar Upadhyay, left the show for films and two more actors Inder Kumar and Ronit Roy played the fan-favourite character after time jumps. Later, our adarsh balak Mihir went on to father an illegitimate son Karan with Mandira. And things were no longer the same. Not only Mihir, Tulsi also changed faces briefly, with Gautami Kapoor taking on the mantle until she was (quite dramatically) dethroned by the original Tulsi. Kyunki 2 With OG Tulsi And Mihir In its second coming, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi is trying to give Smriti Irani and Amar Upadhyay's OG Tulsi-Mihir, now in their mid age, another shot at love. Fans, both old and new, are loving every bit of it. A section of X users is calling them the new power couple. couple...💃😍 Flashbacks are just 💥🥺🔥♥️ Loving this new version 🥰 #kyunkisaasbhikabhibahuthi2 — Maggie_Shaggie❤️😋 (@Happysoul124_) July 29, 2025 The way Mihir looked at Tulsi after all these years still melted hearts. Ewwww max #KyukiSaasBhiKabhiBahuThi2 — Quinzel💋🐈‍⬛ (@Maid_o_Mischief) August 1, 2025 Another urged Mihir to steer clear of extramarital affairs, at least in this season. Mihir and Tulsi still have amazing chemistry despite their age. Mihir please no more affairs and bachhe out of marriage. Have some mercy this time please. #KSBKBT #ksbkbt2 — (@drnnayana28) July 29, 2025 While Tulsi continues to be the upholder of the truth, the epitome of sacrifice, and the flagbearer of tradition, social media users are happy to see Mihir as this new-age father who is open about expressing his emotions, be it love for his wife or concern for his children. Today Mihir stood up for Tulsi when society tried to pull her down for aging & reminded her n us that true beauty lies in sacrifice, strength & love In Mihir's eyes,Tulsi is woman deserves a partner who uplifts like him #ksbkbt2 — Opsora needs prayer only now🤲 (@Being_romeli) July 31, 2025 god!! tulsi-mihir are so so beautiful together 😭😍🤌🏽 @EktaaRKapoor @smritiirani @TheAmarUpadhyay #KyunkiSaasBhiKabhiBahuThi — Gumnaam✨ (@RajxSimran) August 4, 2025 Tuesday's episode had a key scene where Mihir, a health freak, takes shots of haldi ka juice with his son Angad who was recently released from jail. When Angad wonders whether his father was offering him alcohol, Mihir playfully chides him, saying, "Hum Gujarati hain, ye alcohol nahin hai". The father-son duo says cheers and end up saying 'I love you' to each other, a rare scene in the Indian entertainment space. What's Next For Kyunki 2 The last episode of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi ended with a precap of today's episode with Mihir cancelling a match that he himself had arranged for Pari after her potential mother-in-law lashed out against the Virani family's sanskars where they treat sons and daughters of the house as equals. Full points to Papa Mihir for sticking to his guns and winning the approval of both Kyunki 's millennial as well as Gen-Z audience.
