Jordan and Birrane to be remembered at Mondello Park

RTÉ News14 hours ago
Mondello Park will hold its annual Carol Nash Historic festival of classic racing this weekend and tributes to the late Eddie Jordan and Martin Birrane, the late owner of the Co Kildare circuit, who would have turned 90 this year, will feature.
The main straight at Mondello Park will be renamed the Birrane Straight in honour of the Mayo man, who saved the track from closure when he bought the venue back in the mid-1980s
Birrane set up the Mondello Park museum some years ago and two of its cars, the V10-engined Jordan 195 and the Pacific PR01, which saw action in the 1994 F1 season, will both have demonstration runs as part of the 'Eddie Jordan - From Grid to Glory' event.
Some of Jordan's family, as well as friends and former teammates, will be along for the Jordan-themed events on Saturday.
Five-time grand prix winner John Watson will also be in attendance along with Dubliner Derek Daly the last driver from the Republic of Ireland to race in F1, when he competed for Williams Grand Prix back in 1982,
Martin Donnelly, whose 1990 crash in the Lotus-Lamborghini was referenced in F1:The Movie this year, will also be in Mondello.
FIA Formula 2 driver Alex Dunne, who may be on his way to F1 next season with the new Cadillac outfit, and World Rally Championship driver Josh McErlean will make up the new breed of Irish drivers plying their trade at the top of world motorsport this weekend
Not only will there be static displays and celebrity drivers, but Mondello will also finally get to host Formula Ford 1600 racing, the class where most began their racing careers.
On Saturday the drivers in FF1600 will vie for the Fionn Murray Trophy and on Sunday for the Vivion Daly Trophy. They were both stalwarts of the series back in its heyday in the 1980s and '90s and he families of Fionn and Vivion will be in attendance to present the trophies.
Let us hope those who are in Mondello will get to see a decent grid of cars representing FFord racing.
The Irish International Grand Prix Trophy; The Dublin Grand Prix Trophy; and The St Brigid's Trophy, which cover open-wheel, GT, saloon, and vintage car grids from the 1920s to 1960s will also take to the track over the two days
Meanwhile, the Ulster Rally takes place this Friday and Saturday and is the penultimate round of NAPA Autoparts Irish Tarmac Rally Championship (ITRC), with only the Cork 20 to run as the final round in October.
The Galway International was due to be the opening round in February, but it was cancelled due to storm damage, reducing the ITRC to six rounds.
The 2023 ITRC winner and number-one seed Callum Devine arrives at the Ulster Rally carrying the momentum of three consecutive victories and seeking hist first in this event, having notched up runner-up finishes in the past two years.
Devine would win the ITRC for a second time with victory in the Newry-based event.
Hot on his heels is the in-form David Kelly, who sits 21 points behind Devine in the championship standings and has been knocking on the door of his maiden rally victory all season.
Adding intrigue to the Rally2 category are the father and son duo of Declan and Michael Boyle, both competing in Skoda Fabias.
Declan Boyle, the 2014 ITRC winner finds himself sitting just six points behind Kelly and holding a narrow three-point advantage over his son Michael.
Kevin Eves and Chris Melly will be looking to build on their encouraging seventh-place finish in Donegal as they continue their maiden season campaigning a Ford Fiesta Rally2.
International interest comes courtesy of Welsh driver Osian Pryce, the 2022 British Rally Champion, who will behind the wheel of his Hyundai i20 Rally2.
Pryce has an abundance of Ulster Rally experience, including victory in the Citroen DS3 R3T category back in 2013.
Adding further depth to the Rally2 field is the welcome return of Darren Gass, the 2012 Irish Tarmac Rally Champion, driving a Volkswagen Polo R5.

Motorsport: Callum Devine eyeing second title in three years

This is a very different Irish Tarmac Rally Championship season with backing from new title sponsor, NAPA Auto Parts. Storm Éowyn last February forced the postponement of the Galway International Rally and while the Galway club or Motorsport Ireland made no firm decision until last week, the Tarmac Rally Organisers Association (TROA) brought clarity weeks earlier stating the Galway event would not be part of the 2025 championship - a decision necessary to give all the stakeholders clarity. On an aside and with the Galway debacle dragging on, Motorsport Ireland informed some clubs only last Friday that the Galway Mini Stage Rally (only recently fixed for October 12th) would not be going ahead - but that's another story. The real business begins today with the Modern Tyres Ulster Rally, the penultimate round of the campaign where Callum Devine can take his second title within three years provided he garners maximum points from the two-day event. Having missed the West Cork Rally, the Derry driver has since won the Circuit of Ireland, the Rally of the Lakes and the Donegal International Rally and tops the current standings by twenty points. During the season, decisions by reigning champion Keith Cronin and title protagonist Matt Edwards to step away from rallying, albeit for different reasons, changed the dynamic of the championship. Their presence elevated the calibre of the campaign where Devine was one of the few drivers to match their skills. He continues to show great pace onboard his Skoda Fabia RS Rally2 where in terms of the current campaign, he has Donegal trio - David Kelly (VW Polo GTi R5) and Declan and Michael Boyle (both in Skoda Fabia RS Rally2 cars) as his title challengers. The presence of former British Rally champion Osian Pryce (Hyundai i20 Rally2) in the Newry based twelve stage rally is a boost. Devine has never won this round of the series, whether he chases that elusive victory or concentrates on the championship battle with the Donegal trio will probably only take shape tomorrow afternoon for the opening loop of three stages that are repeated later in the evening including some in darkness. Others on the entry are Kevin Eves (Ford Fiesta Rally2), Darren Gass (VW Polo GTi R5), James Ford (Citroen C3 Rally2), Matthew Boyle (Ford Fiesta Rally2) and Mark Kelly (VW Polo GTi R5). In the Historic category, Donegal's John O'Donnell (BMW M3) and Welsh driver Meirion Evans (Ford Escort RS1800) are the leading title contenders. On Sunday, the focus switches to the Oldcastle based ALMC Hellfire Rally, round six of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship. Having regained the lead of the eight-event series last time out, Kilkenny's Eddie Doherty (Skoda Fabia R5) knows how quickly the pendulum can swing. From the disappointment of leading before steering woes dropped him out of contention on the Raven's Rock Rally that cost him the championship lead, he bounced back and took the spoils in the Sligo Rally. With three rounds remaining, reigning champion Monaghan's Josh Moffett (Hyundai I20 R5), Donegal's Declan Boyle (Skoda Fabia RS Rally2) and Derry's Desi Henry (Ford Fiesta Rally2) are also in the hunt for the Vard Memorial Trophy. Moffett crashed out in Sligo and it remains to be seen what car he will drive on Sunday's nine stage rally where Henry and Boyle (a triple champion) have yet to win a round of the current series. Others like Michael Boyle (Skoda Fabia RS Rally2), Jason Dickson (Ford Fiesta Rally2), Daniel Cronin and Paul Barrett (both Citroen C3 Rally2), Gary Kiernan (Ford Fiesta Rally2) and Tommy Doyle (Hyundai i20 N Rally2) can all play a part in the destiny of the title as they too are eligible for championship points. Meanwhile, the European Rally Championship (Round 6) continues with the Barum Czech Rally Zlin where Kesh driver John Armstrong (Ford Fiesta Rally2), who is seeded at number four, will be trying to climb from his sixth place standing - 22 points off third placed Mads Ostberg. The Skoda Fabia RS Rally2 duo of Poland's Miko Marczyk and Italian Andrea Mabellini are first on the road with the former enjoying a strong 22-points advantage. Ulsterman Philip Allen and former ERC champion Chris Ingram, both in Skoda Fabia RS Rally2cars are also competing.

New Mayo manager Andy Moran hopeful Cillian O'Connor will return for 2026

New Mayo manager Andy Moran is 'hopeful' that two-time All-Star Cillian O'Connor will return to the senior team for the 2026 season. On Thursday night, Moran was ratified at a County Board meeting in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park. Speaking at his first press conference, the Mayo boss said the door was open to players who departed recently. 'Can we get the best 36 fellas in the county on the panel playing for Mayo? Get the best team out there, put our best foot forward,' he said. 'If that guy is 18 years of age or 32, 33 years of age. It shouldn't matter now. We are trying to get the best players playing. 'Yes, we will be looking at the older guys that opted out. Of course, them conversations will be happening and some have happened. The key thing for us is looking at the younger guys coming through. How are we going to really push this in terms of the Hurleys, these guys. How are we going to get them through onto the squad playing for Mayo?' When asked if O'Connor had indicated he was open to a return, Moran was positive. 'Yes. I'd be very hopeful that he will come back.' The all-time championship top scorer decided to step away for the 2025 campaign. It would mark a significant boost for the new Mayo boss, who takes over from Kevin McStay. O'Connor surpassed Colm Cooper in 2019 to become the highest scoring player in the championship and also holds the record for a single championship game, scoring 4-9 in the 2020 All-Ireland semi-final against Tipperary. The Ballintubber man is joined on the ticket by former Mayo player Colm Boyle and Paddy Tally. 'Will I add another to it? Possibly,' he said. 'But at the minute, I am quite happy where I am sitting.'
