Sam Wilson Deserves Better Than This

Sam Wilson Deserves Better Than This

Sam Wilson Deserves Better Than This
by Amanda Vincent
From the moment Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) hands Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) his shield at the end of Avengers: Endgame , the character has been under intense scrutiny. What starts as a beautiful moment between friends has become a continuous pattern of disrespect. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier miniseries (airing in 2021) is the first Marvel project to focus on Sam, highlighting how his identity intersects with his new title as Captain America. The show explores the very issue some fans have with Sam — his blackness. Because of who he is, some will never see Sam as the real Captain America.
While discussing themes of racism, government exploitation and discrimination, the series showcases why Sam is worthy of the shield. He cares deeply about others and is willing to put his life on the line to do the right thing.

It took four years for Sam to headline a Captain America film. Captain America : Brave New World (2025) skillfully shows the audience Sam's internal struggle between his identity and what it means for him to work with and for the U.S. government. Unfortunately, the film is a bit of a letdown. The writing and plot seem unfinished and rushed, making it feel like Sam is an afterthought in his own story.
Adding salt to the wound, one of the post-credit scenes after Thunderbolts* (2025) reveals that Sam and Bucky (Sebastian Stan) are not on speaking terms since the government-sponsored New Avengers took center stage. The choice to include this conflict is a slap in the face to Sam.
It could be argued that the government's choosing not to recognize Sam as an Avenger is purposeful and speaks to his unwillingness to be a puppet. However, it is strange that Bucky won't go out of his way either to make things right with Sam or get him involved, especially because the two share a tender moment in Brave New World , which highlights their love for one another.

The timing of these events can't be worse, considering the ongoing, racist backlash to Sam's new role in the MCU. The challenges Sam faces in the MCU mirror the same conversations happening in real life. He has to prove he has earned the mantle of Captain America.
Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, did an interview with Deadline in July where he stated that Captain America: Brave New World didn't work because it 'was the first without Chris Evans.' Of course, there will always be people who prefer Steve Rogers because they grew up watching him or connect with the character better than with Sam.
While he might be referring to the nostalgia and love fans have for Evans' Cap, saying this in the current climate is unnecessary and only adds fuel to the fire. All this is the tip of the iceberg, speaking to a broader issue with Marvel Studios, their fans and their Black characters.

Earlier this summer, the Disney+ series Ironheart was the target of a racist hate campaign before it even premiered. Online 'critics' wrote off the show as 'woke' simply because the lead is a young Black woman. This show also didn't get much promotion until a few weeks before its release. Another series, Eyes of Wakanda, debuted in early August with basically no promotion at all. This animated series branches off from the world of Black Panther, focusing on different points in Wakanda's history.
It is not lost on me that these projects both center on Black characters and have not been marketed like past, less diverse projects. Another article from Variety came out this July, in which Feige discussed the MCU's future and responded to recent criticisms of 'woke' content. Marvel has long prided itself on its diversity. As Stan Lee used to say, it is a 'reflection of the world right outside your window.' While this core message is clear throughout Marvel's content, they sometimes fall into a pattern of adding 'diverse' characters and not developing them or giving them equal treatment.

On the positive side, Feige's comments about Marvel being 'woke' were not at all what I expected, given the current political climate. He made it a point to quote Stan Lee, saying he has stuck to that motto before the current discourse. If he is truly serious about this, there may be hope for Sam and the other Black heroes in the MCU.
Marvel, like all of Hollywood, has always been very performative about how it deals with Black characters. To say that diversity is important and a part of life and then treat Sam Wilson like an afterthought is insulting. Not only has the character been in the MCU for over 10 years, but he is also one of the few Black heroes with longevity in a franchise that has historically centered around white men. Fuel to the Fire Anthony Mackie in Captain America: Brave New World
It is truly disheartening to see Sam repeatedly set up to fail. Kevin Feige's comments on Brave New World solidify these feelings for me. Whether intentionally or not, he validates the feelings of many racist fans who never want to see a Black Captain America on their screens.

Amid all this negativity, these projects are still doing well. As of the first week of August, Eyes of Wakanda is #5 on Disney+, and Captain America: Brave New World sits at #10.

Kindness On The Menu: What Brands Can Learn From La La Land x Mickey & Friends Collaboration

As back-to-school nerves set in and the emotions of returning to the playground run high in many households, compassion becomes more than a virtue, it becomes essential. One U.S.-based coffee chain has embedded it into its brand DNA from the start, in a way that feels genuine, timely, and commercially astute. This week, La La Land Kind Café just announced its first-ever Kids' Menu, created in partnership with Disney's Mickey & Friends and rolling out across its 23 locations in Los Angeles, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, and Nashville from August 19. On paper, it's a lighthearted collaboration: mini drinks in pastel colours, petite slices of toast, and a Pluto-inspired pup cup for four-legged friends. In practice, it's a masterclass in how to align product, purpose, and cultural moment. The brand already stands apart for more than its signature yellow cups. La La Land's founding purpose is to promote kindness and community while supporting young people transitioning out of the foster care system, not through charity alone, but by providing paid internships, mentorship, and long-term skills. It's a 'teach a person to fish' philosophy that has built both loyalty and a strong, values-led narrative. At the heart of La La Land Kind Café is founder and CEO François Reihani, a social entrepreneur whose vision stretches far beyond foam art and Instagrammable 'normalize kindness' mugs. Reihani's journey began at 20 with a successful restaurant in Dallas, but his real calling emerged when he attended a meeting with CASA and heard firsthand the challenges faced by youth aging out of foster care. Moved by those stories, he launched the 'We Are One Project' in 2017 and then, in 2019, opened the first café as a training ground for mentorship, paid internships, housing support, therapy, and life skills. His goal? Not merely to employ, but to empower and to design a business so replicable another brand could copy it for good. His philosophy is simple but powerful: growth matters only if it starts with heart. By bringing Mickey & Friends into that space, the café is tapping into something both nostalgic and universal: the comfort of familiar characters, the reassurance of a safe and friendly place, and the shared joy of treating children to an experience that feels special but accessible. For parents, it's an easy 'yes' the coffee is for them, the fun is for their children, and the brand ethos feels good to support. The timing is no accident. Back-to-school season is emotionally loaded, particularly for younger children and their families. It's a moment when the tone of the year is being set and when messages about kindness, inclusion, and friendship have maximum resonance. In the United States, one in five students report being bullied, according to PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center. Brands that understand the emotional context of this season, and respond with genuine, values-driven initiatives, create not just transactions but trust. The campaign also integrates exclusivity and share-ability, from the limited-edition Mickey & Friends reusable coffee cups for the first 300 guests at each location on August 22, to 'Be Kind' tote bags and plush toys, to QR-code-enabled in-store displays at select sites. It's a reminder that while purpose is the heart of the offer, retail theatre still matters: people want a reason to show up, stay, and share the experience. In a marketplace where brands often overcomplicate 'purpose', La La Land has kept it simple: a clear value (kindness), a tangible action (mentorship and support for foster youth), and an activation that appeals to multiple audiences without diluting the core message. The Disney partnership amplifies the reach but doesn't overpower the brand's identity and in the process, creates a blueprint for how other businesses can show up in culturally relevant ways. Because kindness is not seasonal. But at a time of year when young people are negotiating new friendships, new routines, and new challenges, it's worth remembering that brands can do more than sell. They can help set the tone, one coffee, one conversation, and one act of kindness at a time.

Controllers have a way of disappearing right when friends come over. The Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Pair, Neon Purple and Neon Orange solves the 'who gets the good controller' debate with a bright duo that is easy to spot and even easier to share. Slide them onto a Switch for a quick handheld session, pop them off for tabletop play, or hand one to a buddy so a quiet night turns into Mario Kart laps and a lot of yelling from the couch. Head over to Walmart to get the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Pair, Neon Purple and Neon Orange for just $69, down from its usual price of $80. That's a discount of $11 and 13% off. See at Walmart Color is half the fun here. The neon purple and neon orange shells bring instant personality to a gray dock and make it obvious which controller is yours. They feel light in the hand, click into place with that satisfying Switch sound, and pair in a blink. Use them together for the full two handed setup, or flip them sideways and you have two mini controllers ready for party games. Wrist straps in the box add a little extra grip for frantic races and dance rounds. These are great as a replacement set or as a spare pair that lives in the charging dock. If you are down to a single working controller, this restores the living room to multiplayer status. Families with sibling turf wars will also appreciate the peace. One purple, one orange, and the arguments tend to fade. Built in motion controls make games like Just Dance and 1 2 Switch easy to jump into, and the gentle rumble adds a little energy to wins and near misses. Small quality of life touches add up. The compact size fits little hands and tired grown up hands alike. Battery life is long enough for a movie length play session, then a break, then another round after dinner. Charging is simple. Slide the Joy Con onto the Switch and they top up while the console sits in the dock. No extra cables to remember. If you play on the road, they ride in a case without hogging space, and the bright colors are harder to leave behind at a friend's place. One honest note. Like with any controller, keeping sticks clean and storing everything in a case helps them last. Treat them kindly and they will be there for marathon weekends and quick ten minute breaks between chores. The Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Pair, Neon Purple and Neon Orange is still available for $69 at Walmart, down from the regular $80 price. See at Walmart

‘Wednesday' Season 2 Part 2 Reveals Returning Dead Character, New Trailer

Wednesday season 2 part 2 is just over two weeks away, and Netflix is now ramping up promotion for the second four episodes that will air on September 3. Love Netflix splitting these seasons in half. Love, love, love it. Part of that promotion includes a new trailer, and a new revelation that a dead Wednesday character is coming back to life. Well, not back to life, per se, but will be back on the show. Spoilers follow, I suppose, but Netflix is using this reveal as the main thrust of its marketing. She's literally in the first five seconds of the new trailer. That would be Gwendoline Christie's Principal Weems, who will return to be Wednesday's much-needed spirit guide as she attempts to regain her powers and solve murder mysteries. The bulk of the trailer centers on the arrival of Weems as her new guide, and she's only able to be seen by Wednesday, no one else. Here's the trailer: The main conflict appears to be centered on Tyler's escape and his desire to hunt down and murder both Wednesday and Enid. He almost killed Wednesday in the season 2 part 1 finale, but I mean, who actually believed that was going happen? There's a new interview on Netflix's Tudum with showrunners Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, who talks about her return, and who might be able to come back to life in the future. In short, anyone: 'When we got into the writers room, we were determined to bring Gwen back,' says Millar. 'The audience has fallen in love with the Wednesday–Weems relationship … so we're bringing her back in the second half of the season in a very special way that is as confrontational as it is delicious.' Gough adds, 'Nobody in our world is truly dead dead.' Christie also talked about her new role as the not-alive-but-still-back Weems: 'I've always said that Weems is my perception of a Hitchcock woman, which is something I've been obsessed with my entire life,' Christie says. 'Whereas we were largely inspired by Hitchcock's The Birds in Season 1, Season 2 is more in a place of Vertigo. A quote from the film is, 'Do you believe that someone out of the past — someone dead — can enter and take possession of a living being?' ' I suppose there was no avoiding the reveal of Weems, saving it for the premiere of the show, unless you just skipped all marketing entirely. And now we know that really anyone is on the table to come back to life, so whoever may die this season could be back in some form or another in the future, so we should keep that in mind.
