Holyoke school committee member elected President of National School Boards Association
HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – A member of the Holyoke School Committee was elected to serve as President of the National School Boards Association (NSBA) for 2025-26.
Devin Sheehan was appointed to this national organization's role because of his many years of experience serving on school boards and committees at the local and regional levels. After serving on the Holyoke School Committee from 2010 to 2022, he was appointed as an at-large representative in June 2024.

'Devin Sheehan's election as president of the National School Boards Association comes at a pivotal time for public education. As schools across the country navigate significant federal changes and evolving challenges, we need steady, experienced leadership more than ever,' said Holyoke Mayor Joshua Garcia. 'His deep roots in Holyoke, his decades of advocacy, and his proven commitment to students make him the leader we need right now. We're proud to see him representing our community on the national stage.'
Sheehan has also been part of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC), and was nominated as president in 2019. He has actively contributed to the NSBA, chairing numerous board committees and regional nominating committees, and being an advocate for educational equity.
In his professional life, Sheehan works as the Chief of Staff to State Senator Jake Oliveira. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association.

In western Massachusetts, over 300 students and 170 employees would be affected by the Job Corps closure, which has been temporarily delayed by a New York judge. Mass. education secretary addresses graduation policy changes in Holyoke
HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Earning a high school diploma in Massachusetts looks a lot different now. This comes in response to ballot question number 2, part of November 5th's state election. Healey calls for Job Corps reopening Patrick Tutwiler, The Massachusetts Secretary of Education, was in Holyoke on Thursday. He heard out the concerns from educators and parents on the new graduation requirements. The graduating classes of 2026 and 2027 will be required to complete specific courses to receive a diploma. 'What we're doing now is taking the input, researching to understand how we want to shift and sort of reform the high school experience, and in the form of graduation requirements,' Tutwiler states. Students are still required to take the MCAS exam. However, their scores will not be used as a requirement to graduate. Healey calls for Job Corps reopening
BOSTON (WWLP) – The Trump administration is halting operations at Job Corps, a program that provides job training and housing to young people, and Governor Healey is calling for the program to be reinstated. Tax collections far higher than last year's The mission of the Job Corps is to provide at-risk youth with the tools they need to start a successful career and be financially independent. The Job Corps program enrolls 900 Bay Staters aged 16-24, including over 300 students at their Chicopee location. The Department of Labor announced the program pause, saying it was due to their 38% graduation rate and $80,000 per student yearly cost, but Job Corps' national branch says neither of these statistics is correct. According to Job Corps, their graduation rate is historically above 60%, and the cost per enrollee sits at less than $50,000 per year. The governor says losing Job Corps will affect not only the young people in the program, but employers as well. 'Now, hundreds of young people are without the training and housing they were relying on, hundreds of employees are facing layoffs, and Massachusetts employers are being left without the talent they need,' said the governor. Staff at the Chicopee Job Corps center say they are not sure what will happen to their students, but they are certain all staff will be laid off. A New York judge temporarily stopped the Job Corps elimination on Thursday morning, as both Democrats and Republicans have denounced the Trump Administration's efforts to shutter Job Corps centers.
