
Country diary: A paradise inside four walls
Nine summers and countless hours of labour later, and it is transformed. Nigel opens the door; I follow him and have to stop at the threshold as I catch sight of it.
The garden is Tardis-like, bigger on the inside somehow, and bounded by high walls – stone on the outside and lined with brick – in a loose squareish shape that undulates with the lift and dip of the land. The veg beds and paths give it the feel of a patchwork coverlet laid over a sleeping giant.
'No self-respecting Victorian kitchen garden would be so ridiculously slopey,' saya Tara. It's one of the reasons why they believe the garden predates the house to before the 1800s.
Not only do the high walls act as a physical barrier against deer and rabbits, they retain the heat and shelter the plants from the wind, such that the garden sits in its own microclimate. In winter, the cold air can escape through a rectangular frost window at the lower end (it pours out, apparently, like a white ghost, into the surrounding woodland).
Hard to imagine on a day like this, with bees and demoiselles zipping about, buttercups shining, bathed in warm spring sunshine. Beans have begun spiralling their way up bamboo wigwams, gooseberries are as hard as marbles but growing plumper, more translucent every day. Ancient espaliered pear trees reach out to each other with gnarled fingers. Clumps of chives have gone to flower, their purple tufted hairdos like something out of Dr Seuss.
Filled with all of these photosynthesisers feasting on the sun, this garden really is paradise. The word itself comes from the Avestan word pairidaēza, meaning walled enclosure. How fitting that the walled garden is both how we imagine heaven, and the very place on earth where that image took root.

Beauty influencers can be 'just as toxic as Andrew Tate', a psychiatrist has claimed. Professor Matthew Sadlier believes attitudes towards young people's use of smartphones need 'societal change'. He has seen a rise in extreme eating disorders in young patients and insists that certain influencers are as damaging as self-proclaimed misogynist Tate – who urges men online to 'reject feminism' and dominate women. 'You go into that world with the beauty influencers: I think beauty influencers are just as toxic as Andrew Tate, they're just toxic to a different population,' he said during a Festival of Politics event at the Scottish Parliament. 'The problem is, one video on how to put on whatever piece of makeup is probably reasonable. But how many people watch one video?' Professor Sadlier, from Dublin's Mater Hospital, believes social media is partly to blame for the issues young people are facing. 'I would say it's not that it's creating new problems, but the people who have the problems who would've fallen into that vulnerability group are becoming more extreme,' he added. 'If you look at whatever percentage of adolescent girls will have eating difficulties, there's similar problems with adolescent boys, but interestingly, it's got to do with bodybuilding, overeating, steroid use. 'The videos around self-harm, there is an ecosystem about that that is very difficult to police.' The Online Safety Act came into effect this year, providing a new set of laws that protect children and adults online. It has given providers new duties to implement systems and processes to reduce the risk that their services are used for illegal activity, and to take down illegal content when it does appear. Specific protections have been designed for children. Platforms are required to prevent youngsters from accessing harmful and inappropriate content. Discussing any changes that could be made to minimise the dangers of phone use among young people, Professor Sadlier said: 'Adolescence and childhood is a transitory phase, with respect to the young people in the audience, you won't be young for very long, so it's the next group of young people. 'Just because the current group of 12-year-olds have a mobile phone doesn't mean the next group of 12-year-olds have to have a mobile phone. 'We've been here before. We've been here with cigarettes... I remember when seatbelts were introduced in cars and people thought 'this is going to be the worst thing, how can I drive with a seatbelt, we're going to have crashes everywhere because I'm being constrained'. It does take a societal change. 'It takes changing the paradigm for parents to go, actually you know what, a child trying to learn off a YouTube video is a child in a digital institutionalised environment where they're learning to speak to YouTube, they're not learning how to speak to a person.' Tate, 38, is an American-British former professional kickboxer. He faces prosecution in Romania over allegations of trafficking minors, sexual intercourse with a minor and money laundering. He denies the charges.

Highland Council proposes new staff drug testing policy
Highland Council employees could be tested at work for drug and substance abuse for the first time - if they show signs of being under the "with cause" testing has been proposed as part of the local authority's newly-developed workplace drug and alcohol support officers said staff found to be abusing drugs or alcohol would be offered support. Currently, employees do not face any workplace to Clackmannanshire Council, which has been trialling "with cause" tests, other authorities including Aberdeen, Dumfries and Galloway and Inverclyde already have the testing in place. Highland councillors have been asked to approve the authority's proposed policy. My husband's rude behaviour has driven our daughter away

I am in my mid-sixties, my husband is older and we have two daughters. The eldest is married, the youngest is with a partner who has a nine-year-old son. Earlier this year at a family get-together, my husband insulted the boy about his appearance. I was shocked and the boy's father told my husband not to speak to his son like that. The boy was upset and my daughter confronted my husband. He said it was a joke, that he was being ironic. What boy would understand irony to that extent? My husband said that he was called names at school and nobody got upset. This was wholeheartedly rejected as an excuse. Eventually he apologised.
