Shooting stars visible across the UK in annual Perseid meteor shower
Every summer, the Earth slams into a trail of debris from the Swift-Tuttle comet that also orbits the Sun.
Specks as small as a grain of dust or rice flare up under the pressure of the planet's atmosphere to create shooting stars, said Royal Observatory Greenwich astronomer Dr Ed Bloomer.
Around 150 meteors were predicted to cross the sky per hour but that amount will not be visible because the horizon blocks a full view, he added.
However, an estimated 100 meteors could be seen per hour in certain locations that are particularly flat and dark.
The meteor shower has been running for a few weeks and will continue until around August 24, the astronomer told the PA news agency.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Dan Suri said there was an increased risk of thunderstorms in parts of England on Wednesday evening.
'By the evening, there is an increased risk of thunderstorms across northern areas, with the potential for some fairly wet weather,' he said.
'Whilst the exact location for these unsettled conditions remains uncertain, it's possible a warning may be issued closer to the time.'
Clearer skies are expected in the south later in the week, but the weather bureau predicted 'cloudier conditions and some patchy rain' for parts of the north.
Dr Bloomer said this means that 'we have lots of chances to see this' but 'you have to let your eyes adjust to the dark'.
He recommended stargazers wait half an hour to let their eyes get used to it, adding: 'Take a camping chair or something – if you had one, you would just sit down, and you would just relax, and you would just wait.
'You want to get away from city lights, you want to get away from street lamps.
'If you're looking out from your garden – it sounds obvious – but switch the kitchen light off, give yourself time to just put the phone away.'
People struggling to see the meteors can turn and watch through their peripheral vision as it is 'a little bit better with low light conditions', he said.
As it is summer, viewers will also have to wait until relatively late at night for it to be dark enough to see the celestial show.
The astronomer added: 'For us, it's kind of one of the best (meteor showers), it's kind of reliable, it's long lived, it's quite dense… it's pretty active.
'You don't need to really be in a very specific location, the hourly rate is fairly high, so I think even beginners will be I think satisfied having seen them.'
The weather is largely clear but early in the week the almost-full waning moon could make Perseid less visible.
The meteor shower will be in the north-east as the sun is going down, Dr Bloomer added.
He said: 'However, it's not available to everybody, because the further south you go… Perseid is lower and lower on the horizon.
'The primary interest is for Northern Hemisphere observers – Perseid is pretty low for us here in the UK, but it is above the horizon… in fact, it's above the horizon all day, but the problem is, of course, during the day, nothing's going to be visible.'
Despite it being more visible in the north 'the dominant thing is going to be, can you get yourself in a dark location', he added.
'Getting into the middle of a field in the south east of England, in London, is going to be better than being in the middle of Aberdeen.'
Shooting stars generally only last a second or two and sometimes appear in flurries, the astronomer said.
Rarer meteors the size of a fist or a basketball will produce longer tails and are known as fireballs, he added.
These can last five to 10 seconds, but Dr Bloomer said he has only ever seen one.
The level up is a bolide but 'that's a sort of national emergency type thing', he added.

Drug that slows onset of type 1 diabetes licensed for use in UK-first
A groundbreaking drug that slows down the development of type 1 diabetes has been licensed for use in the UK. Teplizumab can allow patients to live 'normal lives' without the need for insulin injections. Experts hailed the decision by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) as a 'breakthrough moment' that represents a 'turning point' in how the condition is treated. About 400,000 people in the UK have type 1 diabetes, a lifelong condition which causes the immune system to attack insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Insulin helps the body use sugar for energy, and without this hormone, blood sugar levels can become dangerously high. Type 1 diabetes needs constant management to keep blood sugar within range, with patients required to take insulin through injections or pumps. Teplizumab trains the immune system to stop attacking pancreatic cells. It is taken by an IV drip for a minimum of 30 minutes over 14 consecutive days. The drug, which is already approved in the US, has been authorised for use by the MHRA to delay the onset of stage three type 1 diabetes in adults and children aged eight or over by an average of three years. Ahmed Moussa, general manager of general medicines UK and Ireland at Sanofi, which makes teplizumab, said: 'One hundred years ago the discovery of insulin revolutionised diabetes care. Today's news marks a big step forward.' The UK is the first country in Europe to be granted a licence. Type 1 diabetes develops gradually in three stages over months or years. Stage three is usually when people start to experience blood sugar problems and are diagnosed with the condition. According to the MHRA, teplizumab is used in people with stage two type 1 diabetes, which is an earlier stage of the disease during which patients are at a high risk of progressing to stage three. Parth Narendran, a professor of diabetes medicine at the University of Birmingham and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, said: 'Teplizumab essentially trains the immune system to stop attacking the beta cells in the pancreas, allowing the pancreas to produce insulin without interference. 'This can allow eligible patients to live normal lives, delaying the need for insulin injections and the full weight of the disease's daily management by up to three years. It allows people to prepare for disease progression rather than facing an abrupt emergency presentation.' Following the decision by the MHRA, the cost-effectiveness of teplizumab will be assessed by NHS spending watchdog the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) to determine if it can be rolled out on the health service. Karen Addington, chief executive of the charity Breakthrough T1D, said: 'I am personally delighted and welcome the MHRA's approval of teplizumab. 'After years of research, clinical trials and drug development, we have an incredible breakthrough.' Reacting to the announcement, Dr Elizabeth Robertson, director of research and clinical at Diabetes UK, said: 'Today's landmark licensing of teplizumab in the UK marks a turning point in the treatment of type 1 diabetes. 'For the first time, we have a medicine that targets the root cause of the condition, offering three precious extra years free from the relentless demands of managing type 1 diabetes.' Dr Robertson added that the 'next steps are critical'. 'To ensure teplizumab reaches everyone who could benefit, we need it to be made available on the NHS, and the rollout of a screening programme to identify those with early-stage type 1 diabetes,' she said.

The worst drinks for microplastic contamination revealed
Microplastics are all around us – in the air we breathe, in seas and rivers, they're found in the guts of sharks, and inside growing plants. They're also inside humans, too: in our blood, accumulating in our brains, and even in our testicles. So it is perhaps unsurprising to learn that one of the key means of entering the body is through the fluids we drink. Previous studies have established that microplastics are present in both tap water and bottled water, but new research has revealed that hot drinks may be an even bigger source of microplastics than was previously realised. A research team at the University of Birmingham tested 155 common soft drinks, including hot and cold drinks, for microplastics to get a picture of average human exposure through a realistic spectrum of daily drinks available in one country. The study, believed to be the first of its kind, found the highest concentrations of microplastics were in hot tea and hot coffee. The study also tested iced tea and coffee for microplastics, but found significantly less, suggesting the high temperatures and processes used for making hot drinks contribute to the levels of microplastics which end up in the product. The team assessed 31 different types of drinks in total from popular UK brands, all bought from supermarkets and coffee shops in 2024. These included hot and iced coffee, hot and iced tea, juices, energy drinks, and soft drinks. The samples were filtered, and then microplastic counts were determined through microscope imaging. Cold drinks were filtered immediately, while hot drinks were allowed to cool for 30 minutes before analysis. Hot tea in disposable cups contained the highest level of microplastics (MPs), averaging 22MPs per cup, compared to 14MPs per cup for glass cups. More expensive teabags leached the greatest amount of plastic, the study found, averaging 24 to 30MPs per cup. Similarly, the research team said that for hot coffee, their findings "strongly suggest that the disposable cup material is a primary source of [microplastics] in our hot coffee samples'. As not all samples were cup-sized, the team expressed their overall findings in microplastics per litre. Hot tea: 49 to 81 MPs per litre Hot coffee: 29 to 57 MPs per litre Iced tea: 24 to 38 MPs per litre Iced coffee: 31 to 43 MPs per litre Fruit juice: 19 to 41 MPs per litre Energy drinks: 14 to 36 MPs per litre Soft drinks: 13 to 21 MPs per litre The authors said their study "proves for the first time that assessment of exposure via drinking water only may substantially underestimate the risk" posed to humans by higher microplastics prevalence in other drinks. The same team published research in 2024, revealing the average microplastics concentration in tap water (24 to 56 MP per litre) was 'statistically indistinguishable" from that in bottled water (26 to 48 MP per litre). Professor Mohamed Abdallah from the University of Birmingham, who was one of the lead authors of the new research, told The Independent: "We noted that a lot of research in the microplastics sphere is focusing on drinking water – tap water, bottled water – and we've also released a paper from the UK on water. But we realised that people don't only drink water during their day. You drink tea, coffee, juices... "We found a ubiquitous presence of microplastics in all the cold and hot drinks we looked at. Which is pretty alarming, and from a scientific point of view suggests we should not only be looking at water, we should be more comprehensive in our research because other sources are substantial." He added: "We're consuming millions of teas and coffees every morning so it's something to definitely look at. There should definitely be legislative action from the government and also from international organisations to limit human exposure to microplastics … they're everywhere." The authors said the new research "serves as a critical step towards better understanding of the extent of MPs exposure under real-life scenarios, and advocates for more comprehensive studies for accurate risk assessment of MPs intake via dietary sources, to enable broader environmental and public health interventions".
