Why movie fans are divided over 'best reviewed film of the decade'
A new horror film is dominating the box office and wowing critics.
Sinners, from Black Panther director Ryan Coogler, has been called 'the best reviewed wide-release film of the decade', according to Film Buzzr, thanks to its Rotten Tomatoes score of 98%.
Fans have been sounding off on the film online, with most agreeing that it's one of the best flicks they've ever seen.
'First act drags a bit right before the action starts but when it does …. DAMN. Movie was great!' gushed one.
'I haven't seen a vampire movie done this phenomenally since 30 Days of Night,' wrote a second.
A third exclaimed, 'This film totally blew me away. Everything from the acting to the cinematography. But that music and the way it worked with the film was staggeringly good.'
However, some moviegoers disagreed with the praise that had been heaped on the film.
'I enjoyed it but I'm shook how overrated it is…. are you guys sure they didn't bite you too,' one wrote.
'100% overrated, its good but it's nothing special, just a copy and paste of From Dusk till Dawn,' wrote another.
A third said, 'Anything that's not garbage post 2019, is considered a masterpiece.'
Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan in two roles as twins, topped this weekend's box office in what was considered an upset over A Minecraft Movie.
The horror film garnered $45.6million in North American theaters, according to the AP.
The Warner Bros. movie came with a price tag estimated at $90 million for director Coogler, whose past credits include Black Panther and Creed.
Coogler's deal awarding him a percentage of gross ticket sales - and ownership of the film following a 25-year span - has started a 'very dangerous' precedent, rival studio execs told Vulture.
The execs said that the business arrangement 'could be the end of the studio system' as creatives are financially enriched at a level like never before.
The innovative business arrangement over the Warner Bros. film with Kugler has executives 'sweating' over the precedent it sets, studio insiders told Vulture.
The script for the motion picture had garnered a high level of interest when it initially hit the market in late 2023 and began generating bids in January 2024.
The film's commercial viability was also buoyed by the presence of Jordan and Coogler, who past collaborated on the on 2018 Marvel hit Black Panther, which garnered $1.4billion in box office revenues worldwide.
The motion picture, which is set in 1932, was centered around twins Smoke and Stack, who run a business in Mississippi.
It also Miles Caton, Saul Williams, Andrene Ward-Hammond, Jack O'Connell, Tenaj L. Jackson, David Maldonado, Percy Bell and Aadyn Encalarde.
'This is an excellent opening for a period horror film,' FranchiseRe consultant David A. Gross told Variety.
Gross said that the money invested in the motion picture 'is going to cast a long shadow and set a high bar to profitability.'
Imax CEO Rich Gelfond told Variety of collaborating with Coogler on the movie: 'It's been an awesome ride partnering with Ryan on this highly acclaimed, magnificently shot film. We couldn't be happier that Imax played a part in a successful opening for Sinners.'

Another impressed reviewer praised: "Seven Samurai is one of the crown jewels of cinema, a movie that could be screened for visiting aliens in order to show what the art form can achieve." Yet another fan remarked: "Kurosawa's epic adventure masterpiece is one of the best films ever made." A fourth branded it as "among the best of the best action films". Somebody else acknowledged: "Although Kurosawa blends the styles of Japanese cinema with Western sensibilities, the buildup of suspense is approached in near complete contrast to that of modern movies." Heretic, which boasts a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, appeared on the platform's coming soon list over a month ago and it's finally here. The plot follows two young missionaries who become trapped in a deadly game of cat and mouse when they knock on the door of the diabolical Mr. Reed, played by British actor Hugh Grant. Stuck in his home, they must turn to their faith if they want to make it out alive. The movie caused quite a stir when it was released in cinemas last year, as it stars Hugh Grant in a very different role to his usual on screen portrayals. Grant's impressive performance earned him a BAFTA 2025 nomination for Best Leading Actor.

Bruce Willis' daughter Rumer calls him her 'inspiration' amid battle with dementia
Rumer Willis, eldest daughter of Die Hard star Bruce Willis, has made a rare comment about her father during health battle. Rumer Willis has publically credited her dad for inspiring her to become an action star amid his heartbreaking battle with dementia. In 2023, Bruce Willis was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Two years on and the Die Hard star is now "non-verbal" and requires care 24-hours a day. Back in 2022, the action hero decided to retire from acting after he was diagnosed with language disorder aphasia in March that year. One year later, his family confirmed that his disease had developed into FTD. This form of dementia has a typical life expectancy of six to eight years, however it can also be as low as two years in certain cases, reports the Mirror. Rumer, 36, is the oldest of Bruce's children, who he shares with actress Demi Moore. The couple were married from 1989 to 2000, and they also had two other daughters - Scout, 33 and Tallulah, 31. After their divorce, Bruce went on to marry British model Emma Heming and share two more daughters, Mabel Ray, 12 and Evelyn Penn, 10. Rumer has revealed that she is following in her dad's footsteps as she is making her way in the action genre. Her new movie, Trail of Vengeance, sees her play a disgruntled widow named Katherine Atherton, who is out to get revenge after her husband was murdered. In an interview with People magazine, she said: "My dad is such an action man. My mom's done her fair share [of action] as well." With her movie now in cinemas, Rumer added: "I felt like a little kid when I found out I got [this role]." As Bruce slowly loses his fight with dementia, Rumer makes sure that her two-year-old daughter Louetta spends as much time as she can with her grandad. A source previously said: "Rumer wants to make sure Louetta knows Bruce. "She wants him to be actively involved in Louetta's life. It's a very special bond. Bills QB Josh Allen and actor Hailee Steinfeld marry in Southern California
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and actor Hailee Steinfeld tied the knot on Saturday, according to multiple media reports. Pictures emerged from the power couple's wedding that took place in Southern California, where both Allen and Steinfeld live. Photos obtained by 'People' magazine show Steinfeld, in a white strapless gown, walking down the aisle as well as the couple sharing a kiss. The timing and location of the wedding were closely guarded secrets, though Bills left tackle Dion Dawkins let the cat out of the bag in March by revealing the date as May 31. He later backtracked, saying he didn't know anything. Despite the pending wedding, Allen was present for the start of the Bills voluntary series of spring practices, which opened on Tuesday. The Bills return to practice on Monday, though Allen isn't scheduled to address the media until the Bills open their mandatory sessions on June 10. Allen, who turned 29 last week, and the 28-year-old Steinfeld were engaged during the Bills bye week in November, when the quarterback proposed on a California cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The two were first linked in the spring of 2023, when they were photographed dining together in New York City. Steinfeld has since begun attending Bills home games and the couple was inseparable at the NFL Awards ceremony in February, when Allen credited Steinfeld upon accepting the league's MVP honor. Allen followed suit in April in being spotted with Steinfeld arriving for an after-party following premier of the movie 'Sinners,' which stars Steinfeld. Steinfeld began her acting career at the age of 10, and earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress for her role as Mattie Ross in the Coen brothers' 2010 remake of 'True Grit.' Allen is entering his eighth NFL season. In March, he signed a contract extension worth $330 million.
