A-lister antics and Schedule A shenanigans
Summer blockbusters like the new Superman and Jurassic World movies may be doing great at the box office, but promoting them is more complicated than ever. The old celebrity playbook of magazine profiles, TV chat shows, and press junkets isn't enough in an era of audience fragmentation. Publicists now have to strategize which podcasts to make time for, and whether their clients will eat chicken on YouTube with Amelia Dimoldenberg or Sean Evans. This week on The Vergecast, guest host Mia Sato talks to Vulture's Fran Hoepfner to break down the ever-changing new media circuit, whether you're a beloved A-lister, a formerly beloved A-lister, or an aspiring Spotify | Apple Podcasts | Overcast | Pocket Casts | More Then, we take a deep dive with Sarah Fackrell into a controversial legal tactic brands are using to go after online sellers hawking everything from Grumpy Cat T-shirts to closet hooks. Finally, Victoria Song joins Mia to answer a Vergecast hotline from a listener wondering whether an AI translator will be able to keep up with his partner's Colombian mother. How to lock in a year of Peacock for $80 before the price increases on July 23
Home to summer smashes like "Love Island USA" and " Love Island: Beyond the Villa," Peacock is the unofficial streaming service of the summer. That said, it's also about to get more expensive, as the streamer has announced that it will be increasing its subscription prices later this week. Luckily, there's still time to lock in a year of Peacock for $80 before that happens. Once the price hike takes effect, the price of the Peacock Premium plan will increase by $3 to $10.99 a month or $30 to $109.99 a year. The same goes for the Premium Plus Plan, which will increase by $3 to $16.99 a month or $30 to $169.99 a year. With prices increasing in just two days, now's a better time than ever to subscribe to Peacock if you've been on the fence. Simply head over to the Peacock website and sign up to lock in one year of Peacock Premium or Peacock Premium Plus for the current prices of $79.99 or $139.99, respectively, before it's too late. The annual plans offer the best deal, but if you'd prefer to save on the monthly plan, you can check out our guide to the best Peacock promo codes we've tested. Read our full Peacock TV guide to learn more about the platform. Keep in mind that subscribing now will only lock in a lower price for your first year of Peacock. If you choose to keep the service beyond one year, your subscription will automatically renew at the then-standard price this time next year ($109.99 for Peacock Premium or $169.99 for Peacock Premium Plus, pending any further increases), though you can always cancel before then. Peacock price increase: Frequently asked questions When is Peacock increasing its subscription prices? Peacock's price increases will be effective for new customers on Wednesday, July 23, so time is running out to subscribe at the current rate. Jennifer Love Hewitt Denies Sarah Michelle Gellar Feud
The '90s have returned courtesy of the new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel/reboot, and unfortunately, so has '90s celebrity feud gossip. Specifically, rumors of a Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sarah Michelle Gellar feud have come back with a vengeance. And while Jennifer recently admitted she hasn't spoken to Sarah since she was 18 years old, that doesn't mean there's any bad blood. 'I honestly don't even know what that was or how that all came to be,' Jennifer said in an interview with Vulture when asked about the supposed feud. 'I just think people don't want the narrative to be easy. Why do we always have to be against each other and out for each other?' Granted, she said, she and Sarah haven't spoken since the release of the original film back in 1997, but that's why she finds the idea of a feud is so laughable. 'Literally, we've not talked since I saw her at 18 years old when the first movie came out. That's why it's so funny to me,' she continued. 'On my side, we're good. I have no idea where this is coming from.' Sarah has also addressed rumors of a feud. After the former co-stars failed to pose for photos together at the new I Know What You Did Last Summer premiere, Sarah took to social media to clear things up on her side. 'For everyone asking—I never got to see @jenniferlovehewitt, who is fantastic in the movie,' she wrote in a comment on Instagram. 'I was inside with my kids when the big carpet happened. And unfortunately JLH didn't come to the after party.' She continued, adding that she didn't get official red carpet photos with many members of the cast. 'Unfortunately some things happen only in real life and not online,' she concluded. In other words: Jennifer and Sarah are both very busy people with their own careers and lives that don't involve online gossip. Maybe this story is less of a Hollywood rivalry and more like 27-year-old celebrity gossip that refuses to die.
