All decks cleared for Zirakpur ring road project, work starts by end of 2025
Lying on the intersection of two major highways – National Highways 5 & 7, Zirakpur is prone to major traffic snarls.
The bypass, spanning nearly 19.2 km, will start at the Patiala-Zirakpur light point on NH-7 and terminate at the old Panchkula light point on NH-5, helping the Shimla-bound traffic completely avoid the Zirakpur bottleneck. Similarly, traffic from Shimla heading towards Ambala or Delhi will also be able to bypass Zirakpur.
The new bypass will also serve as an alternative route from Panchkula to the Mohali international airport terminal, helping traffic avoid Chandigarh city altogether. This, in turn, will reduce burden on Chandigarh's major roads like Madhya Marg and Dakshin Marg. The Chandigarh Master Plan has long recommended such an infrastructure to reroute inter-state traffic for improved city traffic management.
Originally launched in 2013, the project was halted in February 2014 after landowners approached the court demanding higher compensation. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) revived it in November last year during a meeting of the Unified Metro Transportation Authority (UMTA). At the meeting, an NHAI official cited the rising traffic in the Tricity area due to rapid urban expansion in Mohali, Zirakpur, and Panchkula and pushed for the ring road.
An NHAI official said that tenders have already been floated for the project that is estimated to cost around ₹1,900 crore. Bidding will start on August 19.
The official said, 'We have received clearance from the environment ministry and have floated the tenders. We hope to begin work by the end of this year and aim to complete it within two years.'

FASTag Annual Toll Pass 2025 Overview: The FASTag-based annual pass system for private vehicles will launch on Friday (August 15), aiming to provide seamless and cost-effective travel across National Highways (NHs) nationwide. So far, this pass has been available only for non-commercial vehicles, including cars, vans, etc. The move will further transform hassle-free highway travel in the country. The FASTag system was first introduced in 2014 as part of the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) framework. The system uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to enable cashless toll payments and reduce bottlenecks at toll plazas. In a written statement to Rajya Sabha during the Monsoon Session, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that vehicle owners are likely to save money due to this move. '…[B]esides reducing congestion at fee plazas, the actual savings for vehicle owners and the government's revenue growth will depend on several factors including actual usage of vehicles and fee plaza crossings made in a year,' Gadkari added. As per the Gazette Notification, a person who owns a mechanical vehicle registered for non-commercial purpose, having a valid and functional FASTag, shall be eligible to obtain a pass on payment of fee of Rs 3,000. This pass will be valid for one year, or for 200 crossings through any fee plaza on a national highway, whichever is earlier, irrespective of the fee charged at each fee plaza. The Annual Pass cannot be issued on FASTags registered only with a chassis number. One must update the Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) to activate the Annual Pass. One needs to submit the following documents along with the application for FASTag: FASTag can be purchased from Offline as well as Online mode. For Online, the NHAI FASTag can be purchased from e-commerce websites. It can also be purchased from bank portals such as Paytm Payments Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, etc. The Annual Pass can be activated only on the Rajmargyatra mobile application and NHAI website. It will be activated after verifying the eligibility of the vehicle and the associated FASTag. Upon successful verification, the user must make a payment of Rs 3,000 for the base year 2025–26 through the Rajmargyatra mobile application or the NHAI website. Once the payment is confirmed, the Annual Pass will be activated on the registered FASTag normally within two hours. The Annual Pass is valid for one year from the date of activation or 200 transactions (trips), whichever comes first. Once the Annual Pass completes either 200 trips or one year from the date of activation, it will automatically revert to a regular FASTag. To continue using the Annual Pass benefits, the user will need to re-activate the Annual Pass to get 200 trips/one year validity. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and Indian Highways Management Company Ltd. (IHMCL) have launched the 1033 helpline number to address NETC FASTag complaints at toll plazas. No. You do not need to purchase a new FASTag . Currently, a private car owner needs to cough up at least Rs 10,000 a year for 200 trips. Now, this will come down to Rs 3,000. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) began accepting applications for annual passes from mid-July. The pass will get activated on the existing FASTag and will be valid for a year from the date of activation or up to 200 trips, whichever comes first. Each crossing of a national highway toll plaza will count as one trip. A round trip will count as two trips. New Delhi: Starting Friday, non-commercial private vehicle drivers will be able to enjoy a seamless ride across national highways, with the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' decision to introduce an annual toll pass priced at Rs 3,000 coming into force. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the decision on 18 June. Taking to the social media platform 'X', Gadkari had called it a transformative step towards hassle-free highway travel. The annual pass will not only enable seamless and cost-effective travel across National Highways throughout the country but will also reduce congestion at toll plazas. A dedicated link for its activation and renewal will soon be available on the Rajmarg Yatra App as well as on the official websites of NHAI and MoRTH. Users can still pay at state and other toll plazas through their FASTag, but money will get deducted from the annual pass account only at national highway toll plazas. FASTag, an electronic toll collection system affixed to the vehicle windscreen, uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, deducting the toll directly from the prepaid or savings account linked to it, without requiring the driver to stop for transactions at the toll gate. Currently, only monthly passes are issued at Rs 340 to frequent local commuters for crossing a single toll plaza. Earlier, Gadkari also said that the policy addresses long-standing concerns regarding toll plazas, located within a 60-kilometre range. According to the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008, the distance between two toll plazas is 60 km. 'As of now, the average cost of crossing a single toll plaza varies anywhere between Rs 50 and Rs 100. This will come down to Rs 15 now,' Gadkari said in a video statement issued by the road ministry. 'By reducing wait times, easing congestion, and minimising disputes at toll plazas, the annual pass aims to deliver a faster and smoother travel experience for millions of private vehicle owners,' he added. A FAQ issued by the Union Road Ministry said that after verifying the eligibility of the vehicle and the associated FASTag, the annual pass will get activated. 'Upon successful verification, the user must make a payment of Rs 3,000 for the base year 2025-26 through the Rajmargyatra mobile application or NHAI website,' stated the FAQ. The Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry has mulled the introduction of annual passes for some time now. Earlier, it also planned to introduce distance-based toll charges, but no decision has been taken on that yet. Once confirmed, the annual pass activates immediately for use. What Happens After 200 Trips? Once you complete 200 trips or one year (whichever comes first), the FASTag Annual Pass automatically reverts to the regular FASTag system. To continue enjoying annual pass benefits, users must manually reapply and pay Rs 3,000 again. Note: there is no auto-renewal, and the pass expires exactly one year from the date of purchase.
