DOSM to unveil National Agricultural Production Index to address critical data gaps

Malay Mail5 hours ago

KEPALA BATAS, June 17 — The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) will soon introduce a National Agricultural Production Index to strengthen food security by addressing critical data gaps in the agriculture sector.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the index, to be pushed quarterly, will offer a more comprehensive view of agricultural output, supporting evidence-based policymaking in a sector central to both livelihoods and economic stability.
The index is being developed in collaboration with several government agencies and will mirror existing statistical frameworks used for the manufacturing, electricity and services sectors.
'This data will help identify which areas are experiencing increases in agricultural output and the information can be shared across agencies for planning and policy-making purposes,' he added.
He was speaking to reporters after launching the 2024 Penang Interim Agriculture Census Report, officiated by State Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol here today.
Until now, national agricultural statistics have focused primarily on palm oil and padi production, which he described as 'not comprehensive.' The new index, he said, will offer more structured and detailed coverage of the broader agricultural sector.
Preliminary findings from the 2024 Agriculture Census indicate that the sector recorded sales of RM161 billion in 2023, employing 1.7 million people. These figures underscore the industry's potential if backed by strategic policies and innovation.
In Penang alone, agricultural sales reached RM3.5 billion, despite the state's small size. Individual farmers accounted for 93.1 per cent of agricultural holdings, with organisations making up the remaining 6.9 per cent.
The census also highlighted the active role played by senior citizens, with more than half of Malaysians aged 60 and above still engaged in agriculture.
Mohd Uzir noted that the presence of older farmers in the field remains strong, while youth involvement presents further opportunities to enhance sector productivity. — Bernama

The Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu, Dr Zhu Xinglong, said Sabah's strategic location and wealth of natural resources have made it a key player in the development of a high-level China-Malaysia strategic partnership. 'In recent years, China and Sabah have achieved remarkable milestones in a wide range of collaborations, including trade, investment and tourism. 'China has remained Sabah's largest trading partner for several consecutive years. In fact, from January to May this year alone, 200,000 tourists from China visited Sabah,' he told reporters after paying a courtesy call on the Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Tuesday. Dr Zhu said the visit was to formally introduce himself as the new Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu and to present his letter of appointment issued by the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs to Tun Musa. He also expressed hope that bilateral cooperation and China-Malaysia relations, built over more than five decades, would continue to be strengthened in the years to come. Dr Zhu succeeds Dr Huang Shi Fang, who held the post from 30 May 2022 until the end of March this year.

Malaysia secures RM9 billion Shell investment to create high-skilled jobs, says PM Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 — Shell will increase its investment in Malaysia by more than RM9 billion over the next two to three years, which is expected to create high-skilled jobs, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the plan was conveyed by Shell's Global chief executive officer Wael Sawan during a meeting today. 'This investment reflects international investors' confidence in our sound economic policies and clear leadership. Insya-Allah (God willing), Malaysia will continue to chart a prosperous and competitive future,' he said in a post on X today. Anwar added that aside from being a prominent player in the global energy industry, Shell has long been a key investment partner and part of Malaysia's economic journey. 'I took the opportunity to share the MADANI Government's strategic approach in positioning Malaysia as a stable, sustainable, and resilient investment destination – not just for today, but for future generations,' the Prime Minister said, adding that Sawan had also expressed his confidence in the country's direction. Earlier, Sawan was quoted as saying that demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Southeast Asia – particularly in Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines, and Thailand – is expected to grow steadily from now until 2035. He said the surge in energy demand, driven by the expansion of data centres and artificial intelligence, can be met with LNG as a reliable energy source, especially amid geopolitical uncertainties. — Bernama

Ringgit trades flat against US dollar amid Middle East tensions and cautious investor sentiment

KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 — The ringgit ended nearly flat against the US dollar on Tuesday as investors stayed cautious amid the ongoing military conflict in the Middle East. At 6pm, the local note stood at 4.2390/2475 versus the greenback compared to yesterday's close of 4.2370/2450. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ringgit-greenback pair continued to trade sideways during the day. He said similarly, the US Dollar Index (DXY) remained below 100 points while Brent crude oil prices fell 0.46 per cent to US$72.89 per barrel. He explained that although geopolitical risks have increased, the impact on financial markets remains relatively manageable, at least for the time being. 'The Middle East situation will continue to be on traders' and investors' radar in the immediate term,' he told Bernama. Looking ahead, Mohd Afzanizam said the US Federal Reserve's future monetary policy decisions would also be influenced by tariff-related shocks. At the close, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies. It rose versus the Japanese yen to 2.9271/9332 from 2.9397/9455 at Monday's close, strengthened against the British pound to 5.7413/7528 from 5.7555/7664 yesterday, and increased vis-à-vis the euro to 4.8986/9084 from 4.9077/9170 previously. The ringgit was also stronger against its Asean peers. It edged up versus the Indonesian rupiah to 260.2/260.8 from 260.4/261.2 on Monday and rose against the Philippine peso to 7.48/7.49 from 7.51/7.53 yesterday. The local currency also gained against the Singapore dollar to 3.3068/3137 from 3.3102/3167 at the previous close and firmed vis-a-vis the Thai baht to 13.0114/0443 from 13.0389/0696 previously. — Bernama
