German tech giant Sick to invest RM1bil in Johor, create 2,500 jobs
JOHOR BARU: German automation powerhouse Sick AG is investing nearly RM1 billion in Johor through its local arm, Sick Sdn Bhd, to build a high-tech manufacturing hub in Senai Airport City. The phased development, beginning with RM280 million in Phase 1 by 2026, will span 10 hectares and focus on advanced sensor technologies for global automation markets. Sick's expansion marks one of Johor's most significant high-impact projects to date. The move is set to generate 2,500 high-skilled jobs. Johor Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources committee chairman Lee Ting Han said the state government views the investment as a vote of confidence in Johor's industrial ecosystem. He added it also reflects Johor's ambition to become a leading hub for smart manufacturing in Southeast Asia. "This is not just an investment, it's a long-term partnership that aligns with Johor's strategy to future-proof our economy through innovation, talent development and Industry 4.0 readiness," he said after its groundbreaking ceremony yesterday. The project is also set to deepen industry-academia linkages, with Sick planning collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia for talent development and Research and development. The initiative is in line with the Johor Talent Development Council's push to align education pathways with high-value industries. The site, located in one of the country's most efficiently managed industrial parks, benefitted from the streamlined processes under the Kulai and Johor Fast Lane initiatives. It is also strategically positioned within the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), a cross-border initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity, customs efficiency, and innovation-driven investment. Lee said that Sick's expansion arrived at a time of global trade uncertainty, including new tariffs from the United States, but praised the federal government's swift diplomatic and policy response. He said the state is optimistic that initiatives like the JS-SEZ will cushion headwinds while enhancing Johor's appeal as a tech manufacturing base. Sick has operated in Johor since 2010 with a fully Malaysian workforce of 450. During the pandemic, the company sustained global supply chains despite workforce limitations. Lee said this achievement reflects the resilience of Johor's industrial base. "This project exemplifies Johor's economic strategy in action, where talent meets technology, and global investment translates into real local impact," he added.
