DOTr: NLEX Corp. liable for fatal mishap as truck hits Marilao bridge anew

GMA Network19-06-2025
The North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) Corporation will be held liable for the road mishap on Wednesday which killed a 54-year-old passenger after a truck hit the Marilao Interchange Bridge anew, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said.
The incident comes three months after another trailer truck damaged the interchange bridge, severely disrupting traffic along two northbound NLEX lanes.
In a Super Radyo dzBB interview on Thursday, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said he would push for the waiving of the toll fees in affected areas on NLEX, should motorists experience heavy traffic due to Wednesday's incident.
"Ako ay mago-order ngayon sa TRB ngayong araw na sabihan ang NLEX na liable sila doon sa nangyari na naman kahapon. Kasi nakalusot na naman sa Meycauayan exit… itong truck na masyadong mataas. So ibig sabihin niyan, pinalusot 'yan o nakalusot 'yan ng NLEX," Dizon said, referring to the Toll Regulatory Board.
(I will order the TRB today to tell NLEX Corp. that it is liable for what happened yesterday. The truck was too high but it managed to pass through the Meycauayan exit again. So that means that the NLEX let the truck pass or it slipped through the company's watch.)
"Ito po ay liable ang NLEX diyan and mabigat po ito. At ako ay susulat ngayon through TRB na unang una, kapag 'yan ay na-disrupt na naman ang mga kababayan natin sa biyahe, kasalanan nila 'yan, ipapalibre ko ulit ang toll diyan," he added.
(The NLEX is liable and this is a serious offense. And I will write through the TRB that if such an incident disrupts trips of countrymen again, it is their fault, and therefore I will waive the toll fee there again.)
Based on the initial investigation of the Marilao police, the trailer truck passed the Meycauayan exit to go back to Malabon, but it hit the interchange bridge on the northbound lane when it arrived in Marilao.
A beam from the bridge fell and hit the vehicle behind the truck, resulting in the death of a passenger of an Asian utility vehicle (AUV) and injuries of others, including a two-year-old kid.
According to the truck driver, he had no idea that the truck would strike the bridge because he supposedly passes there almost every day when going from Meycauayan to Malabon.
The truck driver is now in the custody of Marilao police and will face complaints of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and serious physical injuries and damage to property.
In the incident last March, the truck reportedly exceeded the 4.27-meter limit restriction under the Marilao Interchange Bridge.
NLEX Corp. had said that it filed charges of reckless imprudence resulting in damage to property against the drivers and truck owners. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

300,000 beep cards for delivery in August 2025 to address shortage — DOTr

Some 300,000 additional regular beep cards will be available starting next week to address the shortage affecting train commuters in Metro Manila, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced Wednesday. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said the cards will be distributed across Metro Rail Transit (MRT) Line 3, and Light Rail Transit (LRT) Lines 1 and 2, in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive to resolve the scarcity that has caused long queues and inconvenience to passengers. "By next week, wala na tayong shortage ng beep cards. Beep Card will be completing a delivery of 300,000 additional cards across MRT-3, LRT-1 at LRT-2. 'Yun ang na-compute nating shortage," Dizon said. (By next week, we will no longer have a shortage of beep cards. Beep Card will be completing a delivery of 300,000 additional cards across MRT-3, LRT-1, and LRT-2. That is the computed shortage.) The Transportation chief also warned that authorities will clamp down on syndicates that hoard beep cards and resell them for up to P300 each. "Mayroong mga sindikato na namimili sa mga istasyon. We are coordinating with the PNP and SAICT. Babantayan namin 'yung bawat istasyon para mahuli itong mga loko-lokong ito. Papahuli at ipapakulong natin sila," he said. (There are syndicates that buy cards at stations. We are coordinating with the PNP and SAICT. We will monitor every station to catch these troublemakers. We will have them arrested and jailed.) The DOTr will coordinate with online selling platforms to shut down accounts and groups that are found selling Beep cards at marked-up prices. Meanwhile, DOTr also announced Wednesday that personalized student beep cards granting automatic 50% fare discounts in Metro Manila's rail lines will be available starting September. The white, personalized beep cards will bear the student's name. These will be valid for one year and may be renewed every school year. Students may visit any MRT-3, LRT-1, or LRT-2 station starting next month, present their school ID, and have their personalized card printed on the spot. Further, the Transportation Department has scrapped the forms that students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) had been filling out to avail of the 50% fare discount on the MRT-3, LRT-1, and LRT-2. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

LTO suspends for 90 days license of TNVS driver who allegedly tried to stab passengers

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has suspended for 90 days the driver's license of a Transportation Network Vehicle Service (TNVS) driver who allegedly attempted to stab passengers, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said. 'Sinuspinde ng LTO ng 90 araw ang lisensya ng driver ng TNVS na inDrive na nakuhanan ng video ng pasahero na sapilitang nitong pinababa at tinangka umanong saksakin,' the DOTr said in a statement issued Wednesday. (The LTO has suspended for 90 days the license of the TNVS driver of inDrive who was caught on video forcing passengers to get off the vehicle and allegedly attempting to stab them.) The LTO also summoned the TNVS driver and the vehicle's registered owner to explain the incident. They were ordered to appear before the LTO on East Avenue, Quezon City on Monday, July 21. The involved vehicle was also placed under alarm. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon warned TNVS drivers that there are penalties for assaulting and intimidating passengers. According to the DOTr, the 90-day suspension of the TNVS driver's license is in response to the order of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to ensure the safety of passengers in public transportation. —KG, GMA Integrated News
