This Viral Snack Is Supposed to Taste Like Cookie Dough — and We Tested It
Every time my mom baked cookies while I was growing up, I would, without fail, sneak a bite or two of the cookie dough. In fact, if I still lived at home, I'd definitely still be grabbing chunks of cookie dough whenever she was whipping up a batch of baked goods.
But unfortunately, now that I'm an adult living in my own apartment, the justified health warnings about the dangers of eating raw flour and raw eggs — not to mention the cost of the latter — keep me from making a big batch of cookie dough and just digging in with a spoon. To fill the cookie dough-sized void in my heart and diet, I decided to try a simple snack that's been making the rounds on TikTok and Instagram for several months: dates stuffed with butter and topped with salt.
If you've scrolled through food videos for more than a few hours in the past year, then it's likely you've noticed a common trend, and it's easy to understand the appeal. In addition to requiring just three ingredients, creators are enticing audiences with the bold claim that this treat tastes like cookie dough.
This snack is particularly appealing if you're trying to cut down on refined sugar or can't eat gluten, and it's convenient for anyone who is short on time. But does it actually taste like the pure, decadent joy of raw cookie dough? I endeavored to find out.
The short answer is 'kind of.' Unsurprisingly, a date filled with a pat of butter and a sprinkle of salt doesn't taste exactly like cookie dough — you'll definitely notice the difference — but it comes much closer than I expected.
First, a soft, plump date has a similar thickness, bite, and texture to a chunk of cookie dough. While the date is slightly more fibrous, making them not texturally identical, it feels a lot like you're biting into sticky, dense dough. As you chew, a date has a slightly grainy texture, and when combined with its caramelized sweetness, it almost gives the impression that you're eating brown sugar — a sensation and flavor that strongly reminds me of cookie dough.

The richness of the butter is essential, as it balances the extreme sweetness of the date itself, and makes the treat taste exceptionally decadent — it has strong notes of brown butter, reminiscent of the best chocolate chip cookies.
To truly satisfy your cookie dough craving, don't skip the salt, which adds complexity and balance. Together, these three components provide much of what you seek in cookie dough: rich, soft, sticky, sweet, and with a touch of salt in every bite. While this won't completely satisfy your craving for cookie dough, if you're in search of something that fulfills that desire and is much more weeknight-friendly, this will do the trick.
For this sweet treat, you'll want to start with Medjool dates. This variety of date is known for its large size, soft texture, and caramel-like brown sugar taste. All three of these qualities are essential for both mimicking the flavor of cookie dough and allowing the date to easily hold butter. Other date varieties, like the Deglet Noor, are smaller and firmer, making them logistically more difficult to transform into what is essentially a small sandwich inside a date.
You can either purchase pitted dates or pit them yourself. Once the pit is removed, open it up lengthwise (a pitted date will already be cut on one side and should be easy to simply open), but do not tear it completely into two halves. You want the skin on one side of the date to remain intact, like a hinge holding the two halves together.

Cut a small dab of cold, unsalted butter — around ⅛ to ¼ of an inch thick — and place it inside the opening you've made in the date. Finally, top it off with a sprinkle of salt. Many creators online have used flaky sea salt to garnish the snack, but regular kosher salt works just as well.
Be generous with the amount of salt you add to balance out the intensely sweet flavor of the dates. (If you only have salted butter available, you can definitely use that, but reduce the amount of salt you sprinkle on top accordingly.)
If you can't have dairy, I recommend using a cultured vegan butter to fill your dates. You could also try coconut oil, as long as it's kept cool enough to maintain a solid texture, but it won't have the tanginess that dairy butter or its cultured substitutes impart.
While this snack can be kept to just three ingredients, you can also customize it with some easy additions if you'd like. The most popular topping for these butter dates, and the one I enjoyed the most after trying several variations, is chocolate chips. Not only do the chocolate chips give the sweet bites the flavor of chocolate chip cookie dough, but they also provide a pleasant textural contrast to the softness of the other ingredients. Bittersweet chocolate chips work best, because the date is already quite sweet.

Consider adding a sprinkle of cinnamon to the dates for an oatmeal cookie vibe, or include a small amount of your favorite nut butter if you wish. Just ensure you place the cinnamon inside the date under the butter — you don't want to risk inhaling loose cinnamon — and avoid using too much, as it can be quite potent. If you decide to add nut butter, slightly reduce the amount of dairy butter to prevent an overly rich snack.
I've also heard that mixing dates, chocolate, peanut butter, and a pinch of salt creates a sweet treat reminiscent of a Snickers bar, which gives me another idea for what to do with the box of dates in my pantry.

Collage of 'Philippine traffic conditions' misuses Vietnam photo
The misleading collage was posted on Facebook on May 28 by a content creator who has previously shared pro-Marcos misinformation debunked by AFP. The post features two photos, with one showing a gridlocked intersection labelled "DUTERTE TIME". This is contrasted with a second photo of orderly traffic superimposed with an image of Marcos and labelled "PBBM TIME", using the current leader's initials. The post received over 30,000 reactions, comments and shares, and has circulated elsewhere on Facebook, X and TikTok. Marcos swept to power in 2022 after joining forces with the Duterte family in the elections that year but the alliance began crumbling almost immediately (archived link). The feud exploded into open warfare this year with the impeachment of Duterte's daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, and the subsequent arrest and transfer of the ex-president, to face charges at the International Criminal Court at the Hague tied to his deadly drug war. Comments show people appear to believe the claim -- users showered praise on Marcos, whose popularity dropped steeply following his deputy's impeachment and predecessor's stunning arrest (archived link). "'Du-dirty' made a lot of mess. PBBM is fixing these now," one wrote. "It's obvious, under PBBM there is change and people are more disciplined," another wrote. However, the photo showing major congestion was not taken in the Philippines. A reverse image search of the image labelled "Duterte Time" found it shows a gridlock Vietnam's capital Hanoi (archive link). Chinese state-run media organisation published the photo with credits to state news agency Xinhua. It is captioned: "Photo taken on Sept. 8, 2015 shows a traffic jam on a main road in Hanoi, Vietnam. Heavy rains occurred early Tuesday morning in Hanoi left several streets flooded and caused traffic jam during rush hour. [Photo/Xinhua]." The area where the gridlock occurred was at the intersection of Le Van Luong and Nguyen Tuan streets as seen on Google Maps (archived link). The second photo of traffic credited to Marcos' government was taken from a video clip posted on May 26, when the government resumed its "no contact apprehension policy (NCAP)" for motorists in the Philippine capital, which uses CCTV to detect traffic violations (archived link). Text overlaid on the video says, "Commonwealth Now / May 26, 2025/ NCAP." Commonwealth Avenue is the country's widest highway which sees a high volume of traffic daily (archived link). The TikTok clip matches similar scenes at Commonwealth Avenue published by local broadcasters GMA News, Net25 and the Metro Manila Development Authority, the government agency managing traffic in Manila (archived here, here, and here). The Email Chain Heard 'Round the Corps: Top Enlisted Leader Makes Surprise Visit to Corporal's Graduation
Cpl. Andrew Hundley never expected fame, but after becoming a Marine Corps sensation overnight, he wields it with humility and gratitude. In mid-April, Hundley's staff noncommissioned officer attempted to route a military certificate he completed up the chain so he could get a spot in a Marine Corps program designed to give up-and-coming leaders the skills to take on greater roles within the service. But the email got sent forcewide, setting off a chain of hundreds of responses from Marines across the fleet and lighting social media ablaze with memes and fraternal adulation only members of the amphibious service can dish out. Read Next: Army Faces Backlash over Plan to Divert Barracks Funds to Border Mission On Thursday, Hundley, 24 years old and a cyberspace warfare operator from Colorado, graduated from that program, known as the Corporals Course, and the top enlisted leader of the Marine Corps, Sgt. Maj. Carlos Ruiz, made a surprise appearance to help herald his and the other junior leaders' accomplishment. "The Marine Corps gods have called upon me," Ruiz said at the graduation to cheers, laughs and whoops across the room for Hundley. "They were setting up a schedule, and the schedule somehow ended up with -- where you at, Hundley? Raise your hand ..." "An unintentional, so-innocent email that went to everyone," he said at Camp Johnson, North Carolina, where the event was held. In an interview with on Thursday, Hundley said that he was "ecstatic" to have the top enlisted Marine attend his graduation. He was quick to say that his staff sergeant was doing her due diligence in trying to get him into the course, but a glitch with the distro list led him out of the unknown and into the annals of Marine Corps lore. "I was worried more than anything that I would get in trouble or I was worried something bad was going to happen," he said. In the immediate aftermath, he said his leadership checked in on him, and then together they eventually leaned into the joke. "They took off with it and were super supportive about it," he said. "They didn't start making jokes or anything, they called me to ask if I was OK and they wanted to make sure I was doing OK." Soon, Hundley started getting requests to sign his certificate. The Marine Corps' official Instagram page got in on the joke in a post, declaring "take me off this distro" in the caption. Marines and veterans took to social media with memes, but ones that were wrapped in the congratulatory ribbing common to the Corps. "At least of my experience with the Marine Corps, we know when to be serious and that we know sometimes when it's a good time to not be serious," Hundley said. "It's a big community out there; everyone I've come across has been really motivational to talk to about [it], and I think it's a great way that we develop this because it's like friends and brother and sibling, how you have that humor with each other." After Ruiz posted to social media a video of his attendance at the Corporals Course graduation, Hundley said he started getting messages of support and congratulations from across the country, from Marines and veterans, too. He had heard rumors that Ruiz would be attending, but knew he had "so much stuff on his plate" that he wasn't certain. But he ended up being "completely amazed" -- and a little nervous -- that Ruiz attended and appreciated that he was there to celebrate with them. "To me, supporting our Marines in their endeavor to become [professional military education] complete was the win," Ruiz told through a spokesperson Thursday, referring to courses Marines take throughout their careers as they advance through the ranks. "We are Marines, and being a Marine can be difficult. As leaders, if we can take an opportunity like this and turn it into something positive that raises morale, then we should do it." Ruiz said that he too received the email chain and had "a good laugh" about a petition that received more than a thousand signatures to get the commandant of the Marine Corps to come to the graduation ceremony. Hundley said one his favorite replies to the email chain went something like, "I don't even breathe 8th comm air, why am I seeing this" in a request to get off of the distro list, referring to the 8th Communication Battalion at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where Hundley serves as a mission element leader in his platoon. He joined the Marine Corps in 2021, initially wanting to be a pilot in the Air Force. But a Marine Corps recruiter told him about opportunities in cyber after learning that Hundley enjoys building out computers as a hobby. Having worked with animals growing up, he said he intends to start volunteering at an animal shelter in North Carolina as part of his next steps and is looking forward to finishing his five-year contract in the Marine Corps, wanting to "give back … as much as I can" in that time period, before looking at other cyber opportunities in the government or private sector. "I didn't want this kind of thing to take away from the experience of all the other corporals that were going in that course with me, because they worked so hard," Hundley said. "They were amazing people, every one of them in their own different ways. And they were so inspirational. They deserved more fame than I ever got from it, even just that little bit." He was promoted to corporal last year and has thought a lot about the leader he is and wants to continue to be. Of the email saga, he said that he learned it's OK to not be "super serious all the time" and that part of being human is to "sit back and laugh" about the absurdities of life. "There's a lot of things I don't know, and I want to inspire growth in all of my Marines that I'm leading," he said. "I want them to know that they're amazing in their own ways, and that they have valued input and ideas. I want to inspire them to grow as their own human beings and leaders."
