One dead, 4 injured as Tazia touches high-voltage wire during Muharram procession in Jharkhand
The incident occurred in Chakosingha village under the Thodthambha outpost area.
According to officials, as participants lifted a large Tazia on their shoulders as part of the traditional procession, it accidentally touched the high-tension wire, triggering a massive electric shock.
Witnesses said five to six people collapsed immediately, writhing in pain after the shock. One of them died on the spot. The condition of two of the injured is said to be critical. All the injured have been admitted to the Giridih District Hospital for treatment.
Confirming the incident Giridih Deputy Commissioner Ramniwas Yadav said that the administration responded promptly, providing immediate assistance and medical care.
The tragedy led to panic and chaos in the procession, with the mood of mourning gripping the entire village.
This is not the first such incident in the district. In 2023, a similar accident during Muharram in Chakmanjo village under Jamua police station limits claimed the life of a youth and left two others injured.
That same year, in a separate incident in Petarwar, Bokaro district, four people were electrocuted and over 10 others sustained severe burns after a Tazia touched a high-voltage line.
In view of recurring accidents, the Jharkhand State Electricity Supply Corporation (JSEB), following a directive from the High Court, issued clear guidelines last week regarding the permissible height of flags, Tazias, and tableaux in religious processions. However, despite the advisory, several processions across the state continue to flout the rules by carrying Tazias of excessive height.

Tension in Ratlam over viral video, 4 arrested
Indore: A tense situation emerged in Ratlam district's Sailana tehsil on Monday after a video went viral showing a youth blowing fire onto a banner displaying 'Hindu Rashtra' during a Muharram procession. The incident, which occurred on Sunday night at Masjid Chauraha, caused the banner to partially burn and sparked widespread outrage. The video, which circulated widely on Monday morning, depicts a young man taking a flammable substance (probably petrol) into his mouth and igniting it towards a saffron banner emblazoned with the words 'Hindu Rashtra' in large script. Following the viral video, the Sarva Hindu Samaj and other religious and social organisations condemned the act as deliberate and an insult to the saffron flag. In protest, markets in the area remained closed. Hindu organisations also highlighted that a large number of people were present at the scene, but no one intervened to stop the youth. They demanded strict action against the accused under the National Security Act (NSA). Angered by the incident, protesters gathered at Masjid Chauraha and sat on the road to recite the Hanuman Chalisa. Senior police officials, including Sailana SDOP Neelam Baghel, Ratlam Rural SDOP Kishore Patanwala, and Station In-charge Suresh Gadaria, were present at the scene to manage the situation. ASP Rakesh Khakha assured the gathered crowd that strict action would be taken against the four arrested individuals and the organisers of the event. Following this assurance, the protest was called off. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent any further escalation. Ratlam Police launched a probe to verify the authenticity of the video, while security forces were also deployed in the area as a precautionary measure to maintain peace. By afternoon, the police arrested four persons for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, caste, or community, and acts that are prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony, the ASP said. The arrested persons have been identified as Ajju Shah, son of Ramjani Shah, resident of Masjid Chauraha; Bablu Shah, resident of Kabristan Road; Shehzad, son of Salim Mev; and Bhayyu, son of Munna Khan Pathan, both residents of Kalika Mata Road in Sailana, police said. "A case has been registered against these four under Section 196 of BNS. All four of them were sent to jail after being produced before the court. Further probe was on," the ASP said.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The incident occurred when the procession was returning from the graveyard. Providing details of the incident, Jaunpur Circle Officer Shahganj Ajit Singh Chauhan said on Monday that a Tazia made of aluminium was being taken back to Sagunpur under Khutahan police station on a tractor trolley on Sunday night after performing the ritual of burying at Karbala (graveyard) in Patela village. While passing through Sadhanganj, the Tazia came in contact with a live high-tension wire, following which three people—Altmas, Mohammad Kaif, and Mohammad Mobeen— suffered burn injuries. They were immediately rushed to a local hospital, where doctors referred critically-burnt Altmas and Mohammad Kaif to the district hospital. At the hospital, they were declared dead while Kaif was released after receiving first aid. He added that the bodies were sent for post-mortem examination.
