The Assam government has ' pushed back ' 88 alleged 'illegal infiltrators' to Bangladesh from Cachar district in one month, said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday.
Sarma claimed that among persons forced into Bangladesh, 59 are nationals of the country and 29 are Rohingya refugees, who were tracked and identified 'through special operations'.
Cachar shares a 32-km-long border with Bangladesh.
'For far too long have illegal infiltrators gone scot free,' the Assam chief minister claimed in a social media post. 'We are tolerating it no more.'

The Assam government has been forcing people over the border into Bangladesh since May. Many of those 'pushed' into the country claim they are Indian citizens.
On Sunday, the state police detained 15 persons, including women and children, in Cachar. They were suspected to be from Bangladesh and have since been housed at a temporary detention facility in Silchar, reported India Today NE.
Several of the detainees had been living in Gujarat's Surat but came to Assam in a bid to cross back to Bangladesh amid a heightened crackdown on undocumented migrants, the media outlet quoted an unidentified police officer as saying.
On June 9, Sarma said that more than 330 persons who were declared to be foreigners by the state's Foreigners Tribunals have been 'pushed' back into Bangladesh.
The Foreigners Tribunals in the state are quasi-judicial bodies that adjudicate on matters of citizenship. They have been accused of arbitrariness and bias, and declaring people foreigners on the basis of minor spelling mistakes, a lack of documents or lapses in memory.
On May 20, Sarma said that the state was 'duty-bound to protect the interests" of Assam and ' expel all illegal immigrants from the state through any means and as per directions of [the] Supreme Court'.
The chief minister appeared to be referring to the court's February 4 ruling that the state must deport persons who had been declared foreign nationals.

HC declares demolition of community centre in Cuttack dist ‘illegal'

Cuttack: Terming the act as an instance of 'bulldozer justice', Orissa high court has declared the demolition of a community centre in Balipur village under Athagarh tehsil in Cuttack district illegal and ordered to provide a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the youth association which was managing the facility. The structure stood on 0.05 acres of gochar (grazing) land and had served vital public functions, including holding health camps, awareness drives and govt outreach programmes. The demolition, carried out in an encroachment case by revenue authorities on Dec 14 last year was allegedly executed without giving the villagers or the youth association adequate time to seek legal redress. The community had even offered to exchange homestead land for the portion used, but their pleas were apparently not heard. The association filed a petition in HC seeking a direction to declare the demolition of the structure as illegal, order its reconstruction at govt expense, award compensation for loss and initiate proceedings against officials responsible for it. Justice S K Panigrahi, in his June 20 judgment, observed that it is not the bulldozer per se that offends constitutional sensibilities, but the ease with which it is deployed before the law has spoken its final word. The judgment criticised the haste shown by the tehsildar, who acted in violation of Supreme Court guidelines and subsisting judicial orders. Of the Rs 10 lakh compensation awarded, Rs 2 lakh will be recovered in instalments from the salary of the tehsildar, citing his direct role in the demolition. The remaining Rs 8 lakh is to be paid by the state govt within eight weeks, Justice Panigrahi specified in his order. He also directed the initiation of departmental proceedings against the tehsildar and mandated the chief secretary and revenue secretary to ensure compliance. Further, the chief secretary has been instructed to issue comprehensive guidelines for all revenue and municipal officials, aligning with the SC's directives to prevent future violations of this nature.

Congress leaders harbouring Emergency mindset: BJP MP

Indore: BJP MP and spokesman Sudhanshu Trivedi on Wednesday accused Congress leaders of harbouring 'Emergency period mindset' that they were above Constitution and their ambitions outweighed national interests. "Congress believes in the objectionable slogan of 'India is Indira and Indira is India.' The same mindset of Emergency remains prevalent in the party even today. And leaders like Rahul Gandhi consider themselves above Constitution," Trivedi said while addressing a press conference to mark 50 years of Emergency. He said that June 25, 1975 marked a black chapter in the history of Indian democracy as fundamental rights of citizens were trampled, freedom of expression was shackled, and voices of the Opposition were crushed. "Congress wants to run the country according to its convenience. If it wins elections, it doesn't have any problem with Constitution, but after any setback in polls, it starts claiming that the Constitution is in danger," he said, referring to Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi waving the 'red book' in Congress rallies. Trivedi questioned Gandhi's comments during his foreign visits and said, "Months ago, Rahul Gandhi went abroad and asked why the defenders of democracy - US and Europe - were silent on India. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Dark Truth Nobody Talks About! To a query, Trivedi said that the West Asia crisis was nothing but a fight between Muslim countries for supremacy. "One pole of this fight is Saudi Arabia, the leader of the Sunni world, and the other pole is Iran, the leader of the Shia world. We hope that a positive spirit will emerge and the crisis in West Asia will be resolved peacefully soon," he said.

Can't let probe agencies directly summon counsel: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Wednesday said that law enforcement agencies can't be permitted to directly summon lawyers regarding their clients' matters, as this would undermine administration of justice . During a hearing of a petition from a Gujarat-based lawyer who received police summons concerning a client's case, Justices KV Viswanathan and N Kotiswar Singh began suo motu proceedings, stating that such actions were prima facie unsustainable. This order follows a recent incident where the Enforcement Directorate (ED) called prominent lawyers Arvind Datar and Pratap Venugopal for questioning regarding their legal opinions to Care Health Insurance. The ED later withdrew these summons after Bar associations across India condemned the actions. It then issued internal guidelines requiring director approval before summoning advocates. While providing interim protection to the Gujarat advocate, the court considered the broader implications. The bench said: "Permitting investigating agency/prosecuting agency/police to directly summon defence counsel or advocates, who advise parties in a given case would seriously undermine the autonomy of the legal provision and would even constitute a direct threat to the independence of the administration of justice." It added: "This is a matter directly impinging on the administration of justice. Hence, subjecting the counsel in a case to the beck and call of the investigating agency prima facie appears to be completely untenable." The court indicated its intention to seek guidance from senior legal officials, including attorney general R Venkataramani, solicitor general Tushar Mehta, Bar Council of India chairman Manan Kumar Mishra, Supreme Court Bar Association president Vikas Singh and Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association president Vipin Nair. The apex court outlined two primary questions for consideration: whether enforcement authorities should be permitted to directly summon lawyers who are purely providing legal advice to clients, and in cases where involvement exceeds legal representation, whether direct summons should be allowed or if judicial oversight should be established. Considering the matter's importance, the court ordered that it be referred to the Chief Justice of India for further directions. Live Events
