'There is no guarantee in life': Siraj on his tribute to Diogo Jota at Lord's

Hans India14 hours ago
London: India pacer Mohammed Siraj, who is known for using Cristiano Ronaldo's 'Siu' celebration after taking a wicket, revealed that he felt emotional after knowing about the death of Portugal and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and thought of paying tribute to him on the ground.
Jota and his brother Andre Silva passed away in a car accident on Thursday. The accident took place in the Spanish province of Zamora.
Siraj got his chance on Friday when he dismissed Jamie Smith after lunch and gestured number 20 - Jota's jersey number in Liverpool - with his hands to pay tribute to the departed soul.
"After knowing about Dioga Jota's death, I felt emotional as I'm a Portugal fan because Cristiano Ronaldo also plays for that team," Siraj said in a video shared by BCCI on X.
'Life is very unpredictable. We fight so hard for things, but we do not even know what tomorrow holds. There is no guarantee in life. It was very shocking. Today, I got wickets, so I wanted to make that gesture for him. It was my way of showing respect.'
Siraj returned with the figures of 2-85 while pacer spearhead Jasprit Bumrah bagged a fifer to bundle out England for 387 in their first innings.
Bumrah credited his learnings from the last England tour to make the best use of conditions that resulted in a five-wicket haul at Lord's.
'I thought about the slope on the last tour, it did not help. My lesson from that was not keep that in mind and I got the benefit of that. In these hot conditions, it is all about maximizing the new ball. It was not like that in the previous tour, that has been the major difference,' Bumrah said.
In response, opener KL Rahul's unbeaten 53 steered India to 145/3 in 43 overs at stumps. Rishabh Pant, who is not out on 19, and Rahul have so far added 38 runs for the fourth-wicket partnership after quick dismissal of Karun Nair (40) and captain Shubman Gill (16).

FC Goa complete foreign quota with Timor, Moreno signings

David Timor has seven years experience of playing in La Liga where he rubbed shoulders with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo Panaji: Despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of the top-tier Indian Super League (ISL), FC Goa have completed their foreign quota for the season, with the signing of experienced Spanish midfielder David Timor and centre-back Pol Moreno. Timor, who has seven years' experience of playing in La Liga, where he rubbed shoulders with the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo , arrives as a replacement for Carl McHugh. The midfielder has played over 400 games in the top tiers of Spanish football. A product of the Valencia youth setup, Timor has played for La Liga teams like Osasuna, Girona, Valladolid, Leganes, Getafe and Las Palmas. 'There are not too many players with his kind of profile in Indian football,' said a senior official. 'David has rich experience, and has always been dependable. He can win the ball in midfield, switch play and he is unafraid to take a shot at goal. He will have a huge role to play for FC Goa this season.' Moreno, the other Spaniard in the team, will also have a significant role to play as a replacement for captain Odei Onaindia, who chose to return home to Spain due to personal reasons. With almost 100 matches and nearly 7,000 minutes for Racing Santander, his last club where he spent four years in La Liga 2, Moreno will be partnering India captain Sandesh Jhingan in central defence. He has spent time in different divisions in Spain and then moved to GIF Sundsvall in the Swedish top tier. The signings of Timor and Moreno mean Goa will have six foreign players for the AFC Champions League Two Playoff against Oman champions Al Seeb at Fatorda on August 13. The other foreign signings include Dejan Drazic, Iker Guarrotxena, Borja Herrera and Javier Siverio.

Malaga withdraws as host city in 2030 World Cup bid

Spanish city Malaga on Saturday withdrew from being a host venue for the 2030 World Cup, to be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Spain had put forward 11 stadiums to be used, including La Rosaleda in the south coast city. However Malaga mayor Francisco de la Torre said hosting matches could cause problems for the city's club and fans, because of reconstruction work needed on the stadium. 'Choosing between the World Cup and the club, we choose the club and the fans,' said De la Torre after a meeting with the Malaga council and the regional government of Andalusia. 'After (several) meetings... we believe that the most responsible, prudent and sensible thing to do today is to abandon Malaga's World Cup (hosting). 'If the World Cup is a risk for the club and a problem for the fans, it's not worth continuing with.' Malaga would have to play at a 12,500 capacity alternative stadium while reconstruction on La Rosaleda took place, and they currently have over 26,000 season ticket holders. The works would have cost an estimated 270 million euros ($316 million) but the mayor said the decision had not been made in order to cut costs. 'We want there to be a new stadium. It will not be for the World Cup but there will be, that's a firm commitment,' added De la Torre. 'We're not doing this to save money but because it's for the best for the city, the fans and the club.' Spanish second division club Malaga competed in the Champions League in 2013 but subsequently dropped as low as the third-tier amid a financial crisis. In March Spain's head of World Cup 2030 organisation Maria Tato resigned after being accused of fixing the process to decide which stadiums would host matches. Newspaper El Mundo said ratings for potential venues were altered to favour Anoeta in San Sebastian, at the expense of Balaidos in Vigo. The Galician city as well as east coast city Valencia are options to replace Malaga as a host. In June La Liga club Valencia completed financing for the Nou Mestalla stadium, which is scheduled to open in 2027 with a 70,000 capacity. Related Topics 2030 FIFA World Cup
