‘Insult to daughters of the nation': Amid row over MP minister's jibe, NCW chief Vijaya Rahatkar bats for Colonel Sofiya Qureshi
In a veiled dig at Madhya Pradesh minister Kunwar Vijay Shah, National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar on Wednesday condemned the 'derogatory' statements made against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and appealed to people to use 'respectful language and attitude towards women in public life'.
Rahatkar made the remarks in a post on X. While she did not name anybody, her post comes after Shah, a minister in the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh, said earlier this week that those who had widowed India's daughters were taught a lesson by Prime Minister Narendra Modi using their 'own sister'. The Congress had alleged that Shah was referring to Colonel Qureshi, who briefed the media on Operation Sindoor last week.
In her post, Rahatkar wrote, 'It is extremely unfortunate that statements are being made by some responsible persons which are derogatory and unacceptable towards women. This not only hurts the dignity of women in our society but is also an insult to the daughters of the nation who are playing an important role in the security of the country.'
'Dear Colonel Sofiya Qureshi is a proud daughter of this nation, a sister of all Indians who love their country, who has served the country with courage and dedication. It is our responsibility to respect her hard work, dedication, and leadership skills. The entire country is proud of brave women like Colonel Sofiya, and such derogatory statements against her should be strongly condemned,' Rahatkar further wrote.
Rahatkar also referred to the CBSE board exam results announced on Tuesday, in which girls outperformed boys, saying, 'When girls have once again proved their mettle by performing brilliantly in the latest CBSE results, it becomes even more important that we adopt a respectful attitude towards women. To move towards a progressive nation, it is necessary that women move ahead and lead in every field. Everyone is urged to adopt a respectful language and attitude towards women in public life.'
She added: 'Underestimating the participation and contribution of women is not only unacceptable but also an obstacle to the development of the country.'
Rahatkar's post came on a day when Aam Aadmi Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh criticised Shah for his remarks, saying he 'should be removed from the Cabinet and arrested'.

Rajnath Singh: Pakistan on UNSC anti-terror panel is like cat guarding milk
DEHRADUN: Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said the United Nations Security Council 's (UNSC) decision to appoint Pakistan as vice-chair of its anti-terror panel was like "asking the cat to guard milk". The UN decision is not only surprising but also raises a question mark over the seriousness of the global body in the fight against terrorism, he said. Calling upon the global community and organisations, such as the United Nations, to think on issues like terrorism more seriously, he said, "Only when we are free from terrorism, will we be able to move towards the goal of global peace, progress and prosperity." Singh, addressing a dialogue on 'national security & terrorism', said, "India and Pakistan gained independence at the same time. Today, while India is recognised as the 'mother of democracy', Pakistan has emerged as the 'father of global terrorism'." Addressing a dialogue on 'National Security & Terrorism', here, he described Operation Sindoor as the biggest action taken against terrorism in Indian history, and that it was carried out in response to the terror attack on innocents in Pahalgam. He advised Pakistan to seek India's help if it is unable to take action against terrorism on its soil.

BJP minority wing's chaupal in Shaheen Bagh to encourage women to join army gets tepid response
New Delhi: Inside a hall adorned with brightly coloured banners of BJP's minority wing at Shaheen Bagh on Tuesday, a chaupal was organised to encourage women to join the Indian Army. It was a stark contrast to the passionate protests that echoed through the lanes of Shaheen Bagh in 2020. Shaheen Bagh was the epicentre of the CAA-NRC protest in 2020. The chaupal drew a small gathering of mostly party workers. When the event started, five women were present, but after a few minutes, only two were left. Both women were associated with the party's minority wing. Speaking at the event, Jamil Siddiqui, national president of BJP's Minority Morcha, said the chaupal was organised after the successful completion of 11 years of tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "We are talking about govt schemes and achievements of the Prime Minister, highlighting how he elevated India's status globally and led the country to new heights of success. We are also encouraging our daughters to step out, pursue education, and join the workforce, including the military. " Giving the example of Col. Sofia Qureshi, who briefed the media during Operation Sindoor, Siddiqui said: "Sofia, a daughter of our society, showcased the strength of Indian women to the world, demonstrated female empowerment, and made a mark for her community, Islam, India, and Indian culture. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Capital Gains Exemptions for Seniors SmartAsset Learn More Undo We want our daughters to receive military training, join the army, become Agniveers, and, if necessary, fight enemies at the border like Colonel Sofia. They should be able to protect themselves from harassment and domestic violence." He added that with similar discussions, they aim to organise numerous gatherings across the country. When asked about the tepid response received to the chaupal, Siddiqui said: "We have invited only key party workers here. It is a type of training for them as we will discuss with them. Our representatives will then go around Delhi, visiting homes and holding meetings to inform people about govt schemes. We will encourage our daughters to step out, advance, and participate in education and employment." A copy of the Indian Constitution was also distributed among the participants. Outside the chaupal, women said they were unaware of the programme as there was no announcement or publicity about it. However, women added that Col Qureshi is an inspiring figure for them. Aeman Hayat Siddiqui, who aspires to become a teacher, said, "Col Qureshi is an inspiration. We want our daughters to make progress and make the country proud." She added, "I completed my education and am looking for a govt job. We want the govt to create more vacancies." Mariam, a NEET aspirant, said: "Col Sofia Qureshi's journey is motivating for everyone. I feel that women can achieve anything."

Pawar praises Nehru's foreign policy, says NDA's approach alienates neighbours
Pune: NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday criticised the NDA govt's foreign policy and said that Centre failed to maintain cordial relations with most of the neighbouring countries, for which India is paying the price. "There was an era of Jawaharlal Nehru who adopted a policy of taking everyone along. Today when we look at the world map, India's neighbours, including China and Pakistan, are not with us. India sacrificed a lot for Bangladesh's independence, but even it is not with us. There is a question mark over Sri Lanka's approach after China's influence on the island nation," Pawar said at his party's 26th foundation day function in Pune. When the Pahalgam terror attack occurred, Centre made some tough decisions and NCP (SP) supported them, the former defence minister said. "When it comes to national interest, our party will never bring politics. But there is another aspect — maintaining cordial relationships with our neighbours — which we need to think more seriously." The veteran politician also said that his party, along with Congress and some of the Left parties, are focusing on certain sectors to contribute, keeping the interest of the country in mind. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Are Watching Tariffs - Few Are Watching What Nvidia Just Launched Seeking Alpha Read Now Undo "There are some challenges for farmers, industries, and other sectors for which we will have to work unitedly. If we remain together with communal harmony, all these challenges can be overcome," he said. Pawar's daughter and Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule, who led one of the delegations of MPs to four countries to explain India's stand on Operation Sindoor, said that India needs to continue to follow the path shown by Mahatma Gandhi. "During my visit I realised that all those countries still associate India with Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Indira Gandhi. While appreciating Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the leaders of those countries also remembered Gandhi's and Nehru's legacy," she said.
