US women cruise past China in friendly win
Goals from Catarina Macario, Sam Coffey and Lindsey Heaps delivered a convincing win for the American women, who dominated a fragile Chinese side at Saint Paul, Minnesota.
It was the 17th win in 21 games for the USA's English head coach Hayes, who was tasked with restoring the Americans to the summit of the women's game following their early 2023 World Cup exit.
Hayes, who led the USA to a gold medal at last year's Olympics, is preparing her squad for this year's qualifiers for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
The former Chelsea manager would have liked what she saw in a fluid first half performance that saw China's risky tactical decision to play with a high line punished ruthlessly.
Macario opened the scoring after 28 minutes, bundling home a close-range finish after good work from Alyssa Thompson.
The USA doubled their tally seven minutes later with a brilliantly worked goal, which began when the gifted 17-year-old midfielder Lily Yohannes released Thompson down the right who crossed for Macario.
Macario played a short pass into Coffey, who swept home with aplomb.
Macario and Heaps both threatened to add to the USA tally with long-range shots that were just off target before half-time.
Heaps though bagged the USA's third in the 54th minute, nodding in past China goalkeeper Pan Hongyan to effectively seal the win.
The USA face Jamaica in a friendly in St.Louis on Tuesday.

Keys says 'never too late' for success after reaching French Open quarters
The 30-year-old, who won her maiden Grand Slam title in Melbourne in January, reached the French Open last eight for the first time since 2019 with a 6-3, 7-5 win over fellow American Hailey Baptiste. "There is really no time limit, and I think a lot of us, as time goes by, and we haven't gotten it, feel like time is running away," added the 2017 US Open runner-up. "So I think there is no time limit. Anything can happen at any moment." She will next face another American in Coco Gauff for a semi-final spot after the former US Open winner beat Ekaterina Alexandrova. Keys has won three of her previous five meetings with the 21-year-old, although Gauff came out on top in their only previous Grand Slam encounter at Flushing Meadows in 2022. "It's been really fun kind of getting to see her do so well at such a young age," Keys said of her quarter-final opponent. "Sometimes I feel very old when talking to Coco, because she says things, and I'm, like, 'Yeah, I don't get that'. "So there's definitely a big age gap that is sometimes shockingly obvious." The world number eight said she arrived in the French capital refreshed after a surprise early exit in Rome to Peyton Stearns. Gauff returns to French Open quarters, vows to 'keep fighting'
Gauff raced through the opening set backed by three breaks of serve. Alexandrova put up more of a fight in the second set but Gauff eventually closed out victory in 82 minutes. "It feels great to be back in the quarters here, and really happy with how I played today and hopefully can keep going," said Gauff. The 21-year-old Gauff will play reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys in an all-American quarter-final on Wednesday. Gauff's 15 wins on clay this year are tied for the most alongside Elina Svitolina, another player still in the running at Roland Garros. Former US Open champion Gauff puts her success on the surface down to her unwavering belief that she can turn a match in her favour no matter the score. She is hoping to make it third time lucky at the French Open after losing in the final in Madrid and Rome last month. "I have learned in the last two tournaments, especially in Rome and Madrid, losing the opening set in the first round of both of those tournaments and making the final, it just shows you have to keep fighting for every match and keep fighting for every point," said Gauff. "Because anything can happen in a tournament. "So I think if I want to be more consistent on tour, I think that's something I have to continue to do." Gauff made her first Grand Slam final in Paris in 2022 at the age of just 18. She was beaten comfortably by Iga Swiatek on that occasion but feels she is peaking at the right time again in her quest for a second major title. Swiatek has also knocked Gauff out each of the past two years at Roland Garros; in the quarter-finals in 2023 and then in the semi-finals a year ago. "I think I'm less nervous going into matches, for sure, and knowing just the ups and downs of tennis and of a tennis match," said Gauff. "I still feel the years here I feel like I get better with each match. I felt like that was something that I did in '22 and last year as well, and something I'm doing here right now. 'Brave' Bright missed: England's Bronze
Chelsea captain Bright, 31, withdrew from the England camp last week, saying she was "mentally and physically" at her limit. Bright was pivotal to England's Euro 2022 triumph and it is not yet known if she will return for her country's trophy defence in Switzerland this summer. "She's missed definitely in the sense of what she brings, both on and off the pitch," her Chelsea and England colleague Bronze told reporters Monday. "She's one of the leaders in the team, not just because she's the oldest, but just because of her experience, her attributes as a person. "We've all spoke to Millie through the week... we just want to make sure that she's OK, both physically and mentally." Bronze and Bright won a domestic treble at Chelsea this season and also reached the Champions League semi-finals. "It's been a long season for everyone, having spent every day with Millie, I know that she's obviously someone who's quite tough and maybe holds a lot in, so I think it's been quite brave for her to come out and speak," added Bronze.
