Piston Peak National Park Expands the Frontierland Story at Magic Kingdom

Thrill Geek2 days ago

Magic Kingdom is set to expand its storytelling landscape once again, this time with a high-octane journey into the wilds of Piston Peak National Park, a new land inspired by the 'Cars' universe and set within the grandeur of the American frontier.
As part of the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom's history, Piston Peak will add to the sweeping narrative arc that guests experience as they travel westward across the park, connecting the spirit of Liberty Square and Frontierland through nature, innovation, and character-driven adventure.
From Liberty Square to the 'Wheelderness'
Piston Peak National Park builds on a storytelling tradition that starts with colonial roots in Liberty Square and winds through the North Woods, New Orleans, and the Arizona desert. This new land continues that journey west with towering pines, geysers, rugged cliffs, and a high-speed rally race through the wilderness set in a richly themed national park inspired by the landscapes of the Rocky Mountains.
Explore Piston Peak
Guests will encounter iconic sights from the Disney and Pixar 'Cars' world, reimagined through the lens of national park adventures. The land's architecture will follow a rustic style known as 'Parkitecture', a design philosophy created by the National Park Service that blends man-made structures seamlessly into the surrounding environment.
Attractions and landmarks will include: Piston Peak Visitor Lodge
Ranger HQ
Expansive trails and scenic outlooks
An off-road rally race attraction that brings the Cars universe into full throttle
With natural barriers like forests and waterways, the land will be tucked beautifully into the larger Frontierland ecosystem, just across the river from Grizzly Hall and adjacent to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, whose iconic geysers will spill over into the new land's backdrop.
Construction Timeline and Closures
Beginning July 7, the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat will temporarily close as work begins on this ambitious expansion. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is also set to reopen next year with refreshed magic.
This update coincides with a larger transformation coming to the park, including: The debut of 'Disney Starlight' parade on July 20
The opening of The Beak and Barrel later this summer
A brand-new Disney Villains-themed land beyond Big Thunder, featuring two attractions, dining, and retail
With Piston Peak National Park, Disney continues to push the boundaries of immersive storytelling, and guests can soon experience a thrilling new chapter in the Magic Kingdom's legacy of adventure, imagination, and heart.

‘Lilo & Stitch' Hits The Top 10 As The Movie Dominates The Box Office

After less than a month in theaters, Lilo & Stitch is already the third highest-grossing film of 2025. The live-action remake of the Disney animated classic has so far brought in more than $600 million globally, and it will likely continue to meaningfully add to that sum as the film remains a must-see for entire families. The music featured in the updated Lilo & Stitch is also proving successful. In the United Kingdom this week, the soundtrack debuts on two rankings. Due to its length, it's not classified as an album. Instead, it opens inside the top 10 on both the Official Vinyl Singles chart and the Official Physical Singles list, as EPs sometimes count as "singles." The project launches at No. 8 on the vinyl-only tally and No. 9 on the list of the top-selling releases across all physical formats. Both charts' top 10s include a number of new arrivals that land just ahead of Lilo & Stitch. Those efforts include cuts by artists like Pulp, Olivia Dean, and Senses, while popular past releases from acts such as Oasis, Ed Sheeran, and Madonna rebound and place just ahead of the Disney set. The vinyl edition of the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack features just three songs. On side A is "He Lei Pāpahi No Lilo a me Stitch" by Mark Kealiʻi Hoʻomalu and the Kamehameha Schools Children's Chorus, a brand new composition crafted for this updated version of the movie. Joining it on the front side is a cover of "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride," a beloved tune this time performed by American Idol winner Iam Tongi and, again, the Kamehameha Schools Children's Chorus. Side B includes a rendition of "Burning Love," originally made famous by Elvis Presley. This version is covered by Nyjah Music and Zyah Rhythm and produced by their uncle, superstar Bruno Mars. A score was also released alongside the Lilo & Stitch score, which was composed by Dan Romer this time around. Some versions of the soundtrack include both the trio of tracks as well as instrumental versions.

Ahsoka's Dave Filoni May Soon Be Running ‘Star Wars'

Ahsoka With Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy on her way out, the open question is who will succeed her in that role. A new report points to a familiar choice, someone with both fans and detractors in the Star Wars space. In a lengthy THR piece about Disney executive power, when it comes to Lucasfilm, Dave Filoni is the name that comes up. Here's the section: Perfect, right? Well, here are the downsides: I've seen a lot of Star Wars fans read this and say 'of course you want a Lucas guy who knows a ton of dense Star Wars mythology!' I can see that position, but the counterpoint isn't wrong. Andor just wrapped up a two-season run as inarguably one of the best pieces of Star Wars content ever made. You might expect that to lead to an immediate appointment of whoever did that to a top spot, but that's Tony Gilroy, and he's simply moving on to other things. The most promising word from him is 'never say never,' but he's not even close to the conversation here. Dave Filoni at the "Ahsoka" FYC Event held at the DGA Theater on June 2, 2024 in Los Angeles, ... More California. (Photo by Gilbert Flores/Variety via Getty Images) A 'co-head' role with Filoni and Carrie Beck sounds like what DC is doing with James Gunn and Peter Safran, but it's very much Gunn as the face and captain. The same would be true of Filoni. Filoni has been heavily involved in The Mandalorian from its inception, as he is the upcoming Mandalorian and Grogu movie. His pet project series, Ahsoka, is currently the only Disney Plus project getting a second season, but one that appears like it will arrive three years after season 1. Filoni's issue is that he has a fixed set of die-hard fans who have been following his work since his animated series The Clone Wars and its follow-up, Rebels. But a lot of his work within the universe so far has been getting many of those characters into live-action and present-day Disney projects. Great for fans of those shows, but they still have to work on their own. Clone Wars Still, Filoni seems like the logical choice given the options at hand. I do wonder how much the success or failure of the upcoming Mandalorian and Grogu will factor into all this, as that's a film that will be emblematic of his brand, given that he co-wrote it with director Jon Favreau. There was a time when Favreau seemed to have been considered to run Lucasfilm with Filoni, but that idea isn't mentioned in this latest piece. It's a fraught time for Star Wars. Andor is a stunning achievement. Andor also cost $650 million for a show not that many people watched, and its talent is leaving to go elsewhere, including Kathleen Kennedy, who was the show's biggest champion. So, what happens now?
