Cowboys forced to repel stunning Tigers fightback
North Queensland have rebuffed an incredible West Tigers comeback to collect their first win in more than a month with a 32-28 victory in Townsville.
Down 32-6 at one stage, the Tigers scored three tries within five minutes in the second half and got to within four points when fullback Jahream Bula crossed with five minutes left on the clock.
Adam Doueihi missed a tough conversion, which would have allowed them to level with a two-point field goal.

It left the visitors unable to complete one of the NRL's greatest fightbacks, just falling short at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in their Saturday night clash.
The Tigers were left to rue ill-discipline in the first half.
Turning out for their first match since the departure of polarising playmaker Lachlan Galvin to Canterbury, they did themselves no favours with both Jarome Luai and Adam Doueihi sin-binned.
Luai had a stint on the sidelines from the 11th minute for slowing down the ruck after repeated team infringements as the Cowboys attacked the line.
While the star halfback was off the field, John Bateman, who had an acrimonious split with Wests Tigers, scored the opening try for North Queensland.
Centre Jaxon Purdue also crossed in the 16th minute while the visitors were down a man.
The Cowboys then took advantage of centre Doueihi making a temporary exit for a professional foul, with Scott Drinkwater crossing for an 18-6 halftime lead.
That margin proved a mountain for the visitors, made larger just two minutes into the second stanza with Doueihi still off.
Skilful second-rower Jeremiah Nanai, backing up from State of Origin duty, leapt high to take a kick and than raced to the line to score his team's fourth try.
While the Tigers looked out on their feet in the second half, the Cowboys' other Queensland Origin stars Tom Dearden and Reuben Cotter also stood up.
Dearden added a 57th-minute try to his two try assists for a 32-6 scoreline.
The tide then turned for the Tigers in the 62nd minute when centre Starford To'a crossed for his second, after a first-half try.
That was quickly backed up by five-eighth Heath Mason, and then Charlie Staines three minutes later, for a 32-24 scoreline to put the Cowboys crowd on edge.
Bula had them on their feet with his late four-pointer but the home side managed to hang on for the win.
North Queensland will move to sixth place on the competition ladder on the back of their first win since round eight.
It's a third straight loss for the Tigers, who sit 13th.

Galvin receives praise from former Tigers star
Former Wests Tigers playmaker Luke Brooks says it was the 'smart decision' for the club to part ways with Lachlan Galvin given the contract saga would have become a messy distraction for both parties if it was allowed to fester. The Bulldogs confirmed last week that Galvin had joined the club effective immediately until the end of the 2028 season after the young five-eighth informed the Tigers earlier this year that he wouldn't entertain the idea of re-signing beyond 2026. 'I don't know too much about what's going on, but looking at it, I feel like he's handled it really well for a 19-year-old. 'Not many guys that age can go through that with all the media pressure and so much noise going on. 'He still came out and played some good footy. There'll still be some news going on around him, but after a few weeks playing for the Bulldogs, hopefully that goes away and he can focus on playing good footy. 'He's a great player and he's a good young kid as well. Hopefully, it works out for him.' While Galvin has been the talk of the town lately, a man at the opposite end of his career has also been in the headlines with chat around whether Queensland captain Daly Cherry-Evans should keep his spot in the team. The veteran halfback has been a loyal servant for the Maroons throughout his illustrious career, but there have been calls for Tom Dearden to replace him following the game one defeat. Cherry-Evans put the disappointment behind him to star with three try assists as Manly bounced back to thrash the Broncos on Saturday night, with the skipper showing he still has it just days after copping a tough loss in Brisbane. 'When you have a big game like that (the Origin opener) and end up losing, I feel like you want to go out there and play straight away. He really led from the front,' Brooks said. 'To be doing what he's doing at his age by backing up three days later and then putting on a clinic, it just shows that he's a great player. 'There's been a lot of noise, so to put that to the side and put on a performance was great. 'I don't think the halves were the problem (for Queensland). They lost to a good Blues side, so whatever way they go is up to them. 'Hopefully, for his sake, he gets another crack.'

Olympian's tragic loss fuels NRL switch with Dragons
Nathan Lawson reckoned he had 80 family members and friends crammed into the grandstand at Jubilee Oval as the two-time Olympian made his NRL debut. But there was one person missing on Friday as the rugby sevens convert got his first taste of first grade action on the left wing in St George Illawarra's 20-6 win over Newcastle. Late last year, just before he was about to embark on one of his final sevens tour events - and weeks out from switching codes and landing at the Dragons - Lawson received the news that his mother, Karen, had died. "In December, we lost mum, that was hard, it was a week before I was meant to come down to Dragons," Lawson said. "So it meant a lot to me that all the boys and everyone at the club, who I didn't even know, went out of their way to support me. "For that to happen and for them to be so welcoming to me meant a lot. "She was my biggest supporter and would do anything to come watch me play. "She would travel across the world to watch me play so to be able to get a good win and make my debut, I'm sure she's up there very happy." To give an indication of Lawson's standing in the shortened format of rugby union, he was named Australia's sevens player of 2024 and was picked in the World Rugby team of the year. 'Such a shame': NRL world saddened over news about Tim Sheens and Robbie Farah
NRL fans are expressing their sadness and disappointment after Tim Sheens and Robbie Farah were noticeable absentees at a 20-year reunion for the club's 2005 premiership triumph. The 2005 squad gathered in the chairman's lounge at Leichhardt Oval to mark 20 years since their 30-16 win over North Queensland in the grand final that year. Current Tigers coach Benji Marshall was in attendance, as was Cowboys coach Todd Payten (who played for the Tigers in 2005). The only players missing from the function were Farah (who was overseas) and Scott Prince (due to family commitments). A number of the team's coaching staff also attended, but 2005 coach Sheens stayed away. The 74-year-old had a bitter falling out with the club in 2023 when he was sacked and replaced by Marshall. Sheens was brought back to mentor Marshall at the start of 2023, and was supposed to hand over the reigns after two years as head coach. But the club bit the bullet early and sacked Sheens out of the blue so Marshall could take over 12 months early. Sheens boycotted the club's end of season awards night at the end of that year, and has seemingly severed all ties. As for Farah, it remains to be seen whether he would have attended if he was in the country. The former hooker served as an assistant under Sheens in 2023 and Marshall in 2024, but was let go at the end of last season (their third wooden spoon in a row). Club officials have previously stressed that Farah and Marshall's relationship remains strong despite the decision to let him go. NRL columnist 'The Mole' wrote on social media: "Such a shame Tim Sheens boycotted the 20-year reunion of the Wests Tigers miracle of 2005. But he is a man of principal and the Tigers knifed him something shocking." Others described it as "awful" and "very sad" that Sheens' relationship with the Tigers still hasn't been repaired. He led the club in 278 of his 778 games as a first-grade head coach, but was left filthy with the way he departed. The Tigers initially stated it was a mutual decision, but Sheens' good friend Royce Simmons later revealed he was sacked against his wishes. 'Why would you go (to the awards night)?' Simmons said in 2023. 'If you weren't wanted at the club, how could you go to their presentation night? 'They sacked him. And I can only imagine how frustrated Tim is. It's sad to see. He wasn't given the opportunity to do what he wanted to do. You bring a coach back who has won a premiership, and is in the top bracket of coaches of all time, you look to his expertise, then you don't use it. It doesn't make any sense to me.'
