Cowboys forced to repel stunning Tigers fightback

North Queensland have rebuffed an incredible West Tigers comeback to collect their first win in more than a month with a 32-28 victory in Townsville. Down 32-6 at one stage, the Tigers scored three tries within five minutes in the second half and got to within four points when fullback Jahream Bula crossed with five minutes left on the clock. Adam Doueihi missed a tough conversion, which would have allowed them to level with a two-point field goal. Tom Dearden is having a game! 🔥#NRLCowboysTigers Telstra Moment of the Match — NRL (@NRL) May 31, 2025 It left the visitors unable to complete one of the NRL's greatest fightbacks, just falling short at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in their Saturday night clash. The Tigers were left to rue ill-discipline in the first half. Turning out for their first match since the departure of polarising playmaker Lachlan Galvin to Canterbury, they did themselves no favours with both Jarome Luai and Adam Doueihi sin-binned. Luai had a stint on the sidelines from the 11th minute for slowing down the ruck after repeated team infringements as the Cowboys attacked the line. While the star halfback was off the field, John Bateman, who had an acrimonious split with Wests Tigers, scored the opening try for North Queensland. Centre Jaxon Purdue also crossed in the 16th minute while the visitors were down a man. The Cowboys then took advantage of centre Doueihi making a temporary exit for a professional foul, with Scott Drinkwater crossing for an 18-6 halftime lead. That margin proved a mountain for the visitors, made larger just two minutes into the second stanza with Doueihi still off. Skilful second-rower Jeremiah Nanai, backing up from State of Origin duty, leapt high to take a kick and than raced to the line to score his team's fourth try. While the Tigers looked out on their feet in the second half, the Cowboys' other Queensland Origin stars Tom Dearden and Reuben Cotter also stood up. Dearden added a 57th-minute try to his two try assists for a 32-6 scoreline. The tide then turned for the Tigers in the 62nd minute when centre Starford To'a crossed for his second, after a first-half try. That was quickly backed up by five-eighth Heath Mason, and then Charlie Staines three minutes later, for a 32-24 scoreline to put the Cowboys crowd on edge. Bula had them on their feet with his late four-pointer but the home side managed to hang on for the win. North Queensland will move to sixth place on the competition ladder on the back of their first win since round eight. It's a third straight loss for the Tigers, who sit 13th.

Confusion erupts after banned player added to NSW squad for State of Origin 1

NRL fans are calling for an explanation from Laurie Daley after Adam Doueihi and Jacob Preston were spotted arriving in NSW State of Origin camp on Tuesday evening. Daley announced a 20-player squad when his team for Game 1 was unveiled on Sunday night, and on Tuesday two more players were added. Doueihi and Preston were spotted checking into the team hotel in Leura in the Blue Mountains, about 100km west of Sydney. Bulldogs back-rower Preston had seemingly been on the cusp of selection for NSW after a sensational start to the season. But his hopes were ruined by a four-match suspension he received for a crusher tackle in Round 9. Due the Bulldogs having a bye in Round 13, Preston won't even be back before the team for Game 2 is announced. That means any hope he has of making his Origin debut will have to wait until Game 3. Considering he was so close to selection, it's understandable Daley would bring him into NSW camp to get a taste of the Origin environment. It was a similar situation to last year when Joseph Sua'ali'i was brought into camp for Game 2 despite being suspended. Doueihi hasn't exactly set the world on fire in 2025 while playing in the centres for the Wests Tigers. His addition to the Blues squad might simply be down to the fact he can play a variety of positions during opposed sessions. A number of NRL teams have the bye this weekend, meaning players might be using the break to get away from Sydney and not available to join Blues camp. Why is Adam Doueihi in Origin camp 😭😂😭😂 — The SuperCoach Whisperer (@SCWhisperer) May 20, 2025 Adam Doueihi being in the top 22 players in NSW is wilder — TigerCast (@CastTiger) May 20, 2025 Is there another Adam Doueihi that I'm forgetting about? — Jed (@JedRose17) May 20, 2025 Makes sense…. — Chris (@chris65441880) May 20, 2025 The fact Doueihi was included over Tigers teammates Terrell May, Jarome Luai and Api Koroisau hasn't gone down well. Luai was axed from last year's winning team, with Daley opting for Nathan Cleary and Mitchell Moses in the halves instead. Many felt Koroisau's form warranted inclusion, but Reece Robson retained his spot as the starting hooker. And May was a hugely controversial omission after a superb start to the year. Daley picked Max King on the bench and Stefano Utoikamanu in the reserves instead, sparking anger from fans. It came after May made controversial comments on social media that he "might switch allegiances" to Queensland when he knew he wasn't going to be picked. Blues legend Brad Fittler labelled the comment "pathetic", and May issued an apology on Tuesday. "When all those reports came out, there were so many comments saying 'I can't believe you didn't make it' ... I got a bit frustrated," he admitted. "I never should have said that. That's on me. Obviously I was joking, but no one really knows me personally, so I shouldn't assume people are gonna know me. "I wish I could take that back, but I can't. At the end of the day, that's on me. Now I gotta live with it. I'm just gonna keep grinding to earn their trust."

NSW Blues add two players to Origin squad in surprise move

The NSW Blues have added two more players to their squad for the State of Origin series opener. Coach Laurie Daley named a strong squad of 20 on Sunday night, with the omission of Terrell May and injury concerns to Payne Haas and Stephen Crichton the main talking points. Now in a surprise move, Bulldogs second-rower Jacob Preston and Tigers utility Adam Doueihi have arrived in camp after being called up to NSW's squad. Channel 9 filmed Doueihi and Preston arriving at the Blues' base in Leura in the Blue Mountains, where the team will prepare ahead of next Wednesday's series opener at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. Preston has been in strong form for the Bulldogs and he will join club teammates Crichton and Max King, who is set to make his Origin debut on the bench. Fellow Bulldogs forward Kurt Mann was named 18th man in Queensland's squad. Preston's selection is intriguing given he is still serving a four-game suspension for a crusher tackle on Tino Fa'asuamaleaui in round 9, meaning he is ineligible to play Game 1 of Origin even if Daley wanted to catapult him into the team. Preston will next be available for selection for the Bulldogs' Round 15 clash with the Rabbitohs. The addition of Doueihi to the squad will raise eyebrows given the Wests Tigers centre has hardly been in scintillating form so far this season. Doueihi's penalty goal that sealed a golden point win over the Sharks at Leichhardt Oval has been his season highlight so far. NSW Blues squad for State of Origin Game 1 1. Dylan Edwards 2.
