Wimbledon star who made fortune at SW19 in only one year retires aged just 28
Former Wimbledon star Tim van Rijthoven has stunned the tennis world by announcing his retirement at the age of 28. The Dutch player is stepping away from the sport just three years after testing Novak Djokovic at the All England Club.
Van Rijthoven's career peaked in 2022 when he claimed a series of high-profile victories as an underdog. Entering the Libema Open ranked 205th in the world, he received a wildcard and defeated top 20 players Taylor Fritz, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Daniil Medvedev en route to winning his sole ATP title.
His impressive performances continued at Wimbledon, where he faced the eventual champion Djokovic in the fourth round, earning £190k for his efforts. Reaching a career-high ranking of No. 101, persistent injuries have hampered Van Rijthoven's journey, leading to his decision to retire from professional tennis.
In an emotional social media post, Van Rijthoven wrote: "Dear all, with a heavy heart, today I have to share something that I have been trying to process for a long time. My professional tennis career is forced to end.
"Due to a stubborn elbow injury that, despite all rehabilitation and medical trips, fails to recover, I am forced to say goodbye to the sport I have lived my whole life. I wish I had seen it differently.
"I would like to say goodbye on my own terms, with a racket in hand and an audience in the stands. But sometimes the body decides differently than the head.
"Still, I look back with an incredible amount of pride and gratitude. From being a little boy in my mother's arms with big dreams to winning the Libema Open in 2022, my first ATP title, in front of my home crowd in Rosmalen - it will forever be one of the best moments of my life.
"And of course, the fourth round of Wimbledon, where I got the chance to compete against a living legend: Novak Djokovic on Centre Court. The fact that I was allowed on that stage is something that no one will ever take away from me."
Van Rijthoven's journey to the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2022 marked his most impressive performance at a Grand Slam. Entering as a wildcard in his debut at the prestigious tournament, he sailed through his opening match against Argentina's Federico Delbonis in straight sets, but more significant victories were on the horizon.
In the second round, Van Rijthoven caused a stir by defeating American sensation and 15th seed Riley Opelka in four sets. He continued his remarkable run by knocking out Georgia's 22nd seed Nikoloz Basilashvili, setting the stage for a showdown with Djokovic. Despite claiming the second set, Van Rijthoven ultimately bowed out to the Serbian ace, who later clinched his seventh Wimbledon crown.
Injuries ultimately hindered Van Rijthoven's ascent, preventing him from cracking the top 100 in his career. He endured several injury setbacks, including a nine-month hiatus due to a back injury, and cited a persistent elbow problem as the reason for hanging up his racket.
Most recently, Van Rijthoven had been active in Challenger tournaments and ATP qualifying rounds. His last ATP appearances came at the Australian Open and French Open earlier this year, where he bowed out in the first qualifying rounds.
On social media, Van Rijthoven expressed gratitude to those who had helped him during his career: "I want to thank everyone who supported me on this journey: my family, team, coaches, physiotherapists, sponsors and fans.
"I don't know exactly what will happen next, but I know that my heart will always be with tennis. See you soon - maybe on the court, maybe not. Who knows."

Partizan Belgrade star launches 'strange' referee accusation after Hibs penalty decision
A Partizan Belgrade star has launched a wild claim on an element of the refereeing in Thursday's first leg battle with Hibs. Sign up to our Hibs football newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! A Partizan Belgrade star has said a UK-based VAR officiating team left him confused, in strong claims after Hibs' famous victory in Serbia. Martin Boyle's double puts the Easter Road side on the brink of the Conference League play-offs after a 2-0 success away from home in leg one of their third round qualifier. It was not without refereeing angst for the hosts, Vukasin Djurdjevic sent off in the first half for two bookings while VAR intervened to hand Boyle the chance to score from the spot. He duly obliged to put David Gray's side in a strong position for the home leg this coming Thursday. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Goalkeeper Mark Milosevic has aired his anger with the refereeing decisions, particularly with VAR operator Chris Kavanagh and Ian Hussin being from England. Partizan Belgrade star launches Hibs refereeing claims He said: 'They say that the ball did not go towards that player at all, that it was too harsh, but I did not see it. As far as I understand, the VAR referees were from Great Britain and that is very strange to me. I can't comment on those things though. They probably know better than we do. 'We knew what kind of team they are, physically strong and always going for the jump. We showed that we know how to play football, a little different, we made them defend. What in the second leg? Let's go for the win, to get a positive result and move on . 'We did not deserve to lose this game, with 10 players we had control of the game. Unfortunately, we conceded two goals. We were cut by a red card, now whether it was too strict or not, I didn't have time to look. We continued to play as if nothing had happened, we had chances and didn't use them, but they did. This is Europe, mistakes are punished. Nothing is lost, we go there, win there and move on.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hibs verdict from Partizan Belgrade There was a more measured response from midfielder Vanja Dragojevic. He paid credit to Hibs and reaffirmed that belief in turning the tie around remains high within the Serbian ranks. The midfielder said: 'A very demanding game, first of all physically. After the red card it was even more difficult. We created chances and after that, we parried.... Whatever happened, happened - that's football. We'll immediately turn to the game against Napredak. 'As I said, Hibernian is a very strong team, it was difficult, but we quickly adapted and stuck together. I already stated that the exclusion of our player was decisive, but even after that we looked good, so I think we have a chance. Just take it easy.' For Hibs, they have a clash with Kilmarnock at Easter Road in the Premiership to contend with first before they face their Serbian foes again. The winner of the tie between Hibs and Partizan will go on to face either AEK Larnaca or Legia Warsaw for a place in the league phase.

Marko Lazetic to Aberdeen fee and deal structure revealed as Milan transfer enters final stage
The striker is set to become Jimmy Thelin's latest summer recruit Aberdeen have agreed a bargain deal that will see them land Marko Lazetic on a free and for just a 20 per cent sell-on. Record Sport broke the story that the Scottish Cup winners had agreed a deal with AC Milan for their Serbian under-21 international. The Italian giants had initially wanted a 50 per cent and that had been a sticking point over the last couple of weeks. AC Milan had been holding out for the enhanced sell-on to try and recoup as much of the £3.5million they had paid Red Star back in 2022. Reports in Italy last night claimed that it was a 50 per cent sell-on but they are well wide of the mark. The Dons stood firm because it didn't fall into their player trading model. They have seen it in the past when they gave Benfica a 50 per cent sell-on for Duk. Aberdeen were helped by the fact that Lazetic made it clear that he wanted to make the move to Pittodrie. They are now in the process of finalising the move. Lazetic will sign a long-term deal subject to a medical and a visa being issued. The Dons are pushing to get everything in place for the 21-year-old to be registered ahead of their Europa League play-off, where they will face the winners of FCSB and Drita. Manager Jimmy Thelin is still looking to add another three signings, on top of Lazetic, before the close of the window. Etienne Youte breaks cover as Celtic issued Jakob Breum red flag before key transfer deadline
Brendan Rodgers is in dire need of recruits with the season well under way for the Scottish champions Le Havre defender Etienne Youte has thrown open the door to Celtic as he admitted he is awaiting the right club for his next move. Reports in France suggest the Scottish Premiership champions have joined Anderlecht and Besiktas in the race to land the 23-year-old. Youte only has a year remaining on his contract and the Ligue 1 outfit would reportedly accept a €5million (£4.3million) fee this summer. But the centre-back has yet to receive an offer with boss Brendan Rodgers conceding ahead of the clash with Aberdeen that no new arrivals were imminent. Speaking to Paris Normadie, Youte admitted: "I know now that I have to be patient before making a decision. For the moment, I'm here and I feel good within this group. I'm preparing for the season. "If there are interesting offers for me and for the club, we will find an agreement together." Celtic are also looking to add more firepower up front after Rodgers' demands - with forward Jakob Breum on the agenda after having multiple bids knocked back by the Dutch club. Go Ahead Eagles chief Jan Willem van Dop even aimed a brutal swipe at the Hoops as he told them to conduct themselves more like Rangers after a deal for Oliver Antman was concluded quickly - but a transfer could still be alive. The Dane missed his club's draw with Fortuna Sittard, but boss Melvin Boel insisted it was not to do with an imminent exit - and explained the absence was due to injury. He said: "It doesn't look bad, but the match in Sittard comes too soon. I'm hopeful he'll be back next week." And former Denmark international Kenneth Perez had a warning for the Hoops - insisting Breum may not be ready to step up a level. The former PSV and Ajax star told ESPN: "He's good for the Dutch league, where you can indeed play like that. A bit of beauty between the lines, being clever, and so on. "He's a good footballer, but when you see what a player needs to have to play at a higher level now... That's different." It comes with the first leg of the Champions League qualifier fast approaching - with Johan Mjallby insisting Celtic must find the attacking additions that Rodgers' requires before the clash on August 20. He told the Sunday Post: *Of course, supporters want to see some new signings and Brendan has made his feelings clear. "They will want business done in the coming week to have the signings eligible for the Champions League play-off game. That will be so important to win that tie. Having done so well last season in Europe, it's natural to want to kick on and grow. "I covered a few of Celtic's Champions League games last season and they really came of age. "The supporters now expect that level of performance every tie in Europe. So, it's understandable to want to add extra quality to the squad. It will never guarantee anything but it certainly gives you a better chance of being successful. "Kieran Tierney's arrival back at the club is great business. He'll add his experience at European level and will be really helpful to the team. "Callum McGregor controls the midfield area and that sort of thing takes care of itself. But Brendan feels the team needs help in the final third and you want to have as much creativity as possible in the team."
