Conor McGregor: Woman who won civil rape case to sue over appeal

BBC News4 days ago
A woman who won a civil case against Conor McGregor is to sue him and two other people for damages alleging they engaged in malicious abuse of court processes. In November, McGregor was ordered to pay £206,000 in damages plus costs to Nikita Hand, who accused him of raping her in a hotel in Dublin in 2018.McGregor had intended to call Samantha O'Reilly and Steven Cummins to give evidence at his appeal before withdrawing the application. McGregor lost his appeal on Thursday against the finding that he sexually assaulted Ms Hand.
The appeal was based around several issues arising from the civil trial at Dublin's High Court last year. They included reference to the question "did Conor McGregor assault Nikita Hand?" being asked of the jury on the issue paper.McGregor's legal team said it should have specified sexual assault.McGregor also appealed on an issue around the handling of his answers in interviews with gardaí (Irish police officers). His legal team explained that the jury heard McGregor gave about 100 "no comment" answers to gardaí.
At the beginning of the process, Ireland's Court of Appeal was told that McGregor had withdrawn an application to have new evidence entered at the appeal. The proposed evidence was from couple Samantha O'Reilly and Steven Cummins.A previous preliminary hearing was told that they claimed to have witnessed a row between Ms Hand and her former partner Stephen Redmond in December 2018.The court heard McGregor believed the new evidence suggested that bruising on Nikita Hand's body could have been caused by her former partner. In an affidavit, Ms Hand had described the allegations as untrue and lies. The senior judges said it was "somewhat mysterious" that what they described as an "important and contentious" part of the appeal had been "cast aside".They awarded Ms Hand costs in relation to this aspect of the case.
'Retraumatised me over and over'
Speaking outside court on Thursday, Ms Hand said she was grateful for the support she has received throughout the civil action."This appeal has retraumatised me over and over again, being forced to relive it, what happened has had a huge impact on me," she said.Ms Hand added: "To every survivor out there, I know how hard it is, but please, don't be silenced."You deserve to be heard, you also deserve justice. Today, I can finally move on and try to heal."

Repair Shop Jay Blades turns to TikTok to earn money from fans and host late night live sessions despite being charged with two counts of rape as he awaits trial on separate charge of controlling and coercive behaviour

BBC star Jay Blades, who has been charged with two counts of rape, hosts bizarre late night TikTok lives, declares himself a 'born again' Christian and is raking in cash from fans. Despite serious allegations against the TV presenter, who was charged with two counts of rape on Monday, the Repair Shop star seems unfazed as he turns to social media to earn money and help improve his public image. The Mail can reveal that Blades, 54, who is currently on a break from television following the disturbing allegations, has taken to hosting late-night livestreams from his bedroom – dancing to gospel and soul music, preaching about his newfound faith, and interacting with a growing online fanbase. During these TikTok sessions – some running well into the early hours – Blades is seen smiling, singing, and declaring himself a 'born again Christian', praising the 'greatness of God' to hundreds of viewers at a time. Fans, many of whom appear unaware of the serious charges he's facing, have been sending him virtual gifts during the livestreams – which convert into real money. The embattled TV star is reportedly earning income from the platform as he continues to build an enthusiastic following online. Blades currently has 15,000 followers on TikTok and posts regularly about his 'weekend sessions'. He has also gained 584 followers on Twitch, where he broadcasts his session. He is also 'earning' 389 bits - which on Twitch are a virtual good that viewers can purchase and use to 'Cheer' in a streamer's chat. Streamers earn revenue based on the number of Bits used in their chat. Jay's goal on his profile says his 'goal' is to earn 1,000 bits. The most recent video advertising his next 'service' reads: 'Sunday is for soul care. 'For grace, elegance, and moments that feel like velvet. Today, I invite you into a space of refined peace and timeless beauty. Music that calms the chaos, elevates the spirit, and reminds you of who you are beneath the rush. 'This is Sophisticated Sunday—where every song is chosen with intention, every sound is smooth as silk, and your presence is all that's needed. 'Unwind. Reflect. Feel deeply. Let the music move you.' According to his profile, his next online session will be taking place this weekend, late into the evening on Friday. Police said in a statement on Monday night that the 55-year-old father-of-three would appear at magistrates' court next Wednesday. A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: 'Jason Blades, 55, of Claverley in Shropshire, has been charged with two counts of rape. 'He is due to appear at Telford magistrates' court on 13 August 2025.' Blades is currently awaiting trial on a separate charge of coercive control of his estranged wife Lisa-Marie Zbozen. He denied the allegation when he appeared at Worcester Crown Court last October. The star was charged last September with a single count of 'controlling and coercive behaviour' between January 1 2023 and September 12 2024. The single charge relates to his fitness instructor wife Ms Zbozen, who announced on Instagram on May 2 last year that she had walked out of the marriage. The BBC show, which started on daytime TV in 2017 before moving to a primetime slot, saw Blades become one of the best-known faces on British TV. He was honoured with an MBE in 2021. He has been at the helm of the show for seven years, but was dropped from last year's live tour. Roman Kemp In 2022, a special one-off episode to mark the BBC's centenary saw Blades and the repair team visit the King, when he was still the Prince of Wales, at Dumfries House in Scotland. Blades was made an MBE by Charles in May 2022 for services to craft and in recognition of his work promoting heritage craft and restoration in the UK.

Simon Harris holds talks with Haitian counterpart over Gena Heraty kidnapping

Ireland's deputy premier Simon Harris has held talks with his Haitian counterpart about the kidnapping of Irish woman Gena Heraty. Mr Harris, Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs, spoke to Haiti's foreign minister, Harvel Jean-Baptiste by phone and asked that everything is done to ensure the release of Ms Heraty and the other hostages, including a three-year-old child. Ms Heraty was kidnapped along with seven other people from an orphanage in Haiti. Ms Heraty is originally from Westport in Co Mayo. She oversees the orphanage, which is run by the humanitarian organisation Nos Petits Freres Et Soeurs (Our Little Brothers And Sisters). It is understood Ms Heraty was among seven employees who were taken in the incident as well as the young child. Speaking after the call, Mr Harris said: 'I welcome my engagement with Minister Harvel Jean Baptiste after what has been an extremely traumatic few days for the Heraty family, as well as the families of all those who were kidnapped. 'The minister assured me of his support in our work to ensure the safe release of Gena, and all the hostages, who have gone through the most horrendous of ordeals. 'We have agreed to stay in touch about the case, which remains extremely sensitive. 'My officials in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade are in constant contact with the Heraty family. 'When we have further updates, we will provide them.' Mr Harris said he had been in contact with Ms Heraty's family on Monday. Ms Heraty is a member of Viatores Christi, a lay missionary organisation. In a statement, the group said Ms Heraty was taken by armed individuals from her home at the NPFS (Nos Petits Freres et Soeurs) compound in Kenscoff on Sunday morning. 'Gena has worked in Haiti for over 30 years, dedicating her life to children and adults with disabilities through her leadership of NPFS's Special Needs Programme,' it said. 'Her commitment, compassion and steady presence have made a lasting difference to many families in the region. 'Our organisation has supported NPFS's work for a number of years and has seen first-hand the impact of Gena's efforts. We are in close contact with our partners on the ground and remain hopeful for her safe return. 'We are thinking of Gena, her family and colleagues, and the adults and children in her care. We ask that her privacy — and that of those closest to her — be respected as efforts continue to clarify the situation.' Fr John Kenny, administrator of Westport parish in Co Mayo, said the local community was 'saddened and shocked' by the kidnapping. He told RTE Radio 1 that many people attended the weekly Monday mass to pray for her. Ms Heraty's sister, Mary, spoke at the mass. Fr Kenny added: '(The mass) would have generally a small attendance. But yesterday evening, cars were everywhere. People were gathered and quietly prayed and then met with the family afterwards. 'The evening was a nice evening, a quiet evening, so they had the opportunity to meet with her siblings and her extended family and console them and chat to them and reassure them of our prayers and support. '(Mary) was maybe a little bit nervous to speak, because it really is on tenterhooks that anything said or done or anything that would upset the situation in any way, even at this great distance, on social media and (media) coverage, you would be worried. 'The family are very appreciative of the support and very conscious that people are praying and supporting them as we can.' He described Ms Heraty as 'wonderful, generous and caring'. 'She's not one for the spotlight or to highlight herself. It's always the work she does that she draws attention to and the people she works with,' he added. 'Any fundraising events that we support, the local schools, the local communities, are generous to her cause and the cause she works for. 'Reluctantly, as I said, she has to come forward to do that, but it's never for herself. It's never for her own benefit. It's always for the benefit of others. 'That's just the nature of the person she is, a wonderful, generous, caring, compassionate person, a great human being.' Ms Heraty survived a vicious assault while she worked at a Haitian orphanage in 2011. She was punched and hit a number of times with a hammer when men broke into the building. 'We wouldn't know all the ins and outs of what goes on there, but we are conscious that it's an area where there's a lot of unrest, and then all the storms and various terrible natural events that happen too over the years,' Fr Kenny added. 'We're worried about her physical concerns there, that there will be storm damage and flooding and all kinds of things. But then, yes, the unrest and the unease of the local situation.' The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the incident and is providing consular assistance.
