Atiqa Mir Becomes First Indian To Secure Top-10 Finish At Rotax Euro Trophy
She had the misfortune of having two bumper penalties but despite that, she finished in 10th place after thee heats. In the pre-finals on Sunday, the heavens opened up and with no prior experience of driving in the wet on this track, Atiqa showed her exceptional natural talent and fought hard with the best drivers in the world.
Atiqa, who is mentored by India's first Formula 1 driver Narain Karthikeyan, qualified for the finals and was 10th on the grid. The finals were held in even more treacherous wet conditions and Atiqa was in top form again. After dropping four places at the start, she fought back to finish ninth.
Atiqa ended as the highest placed Indian and Asian in the highly-competitive field. Reflecting on the weekend, Atiqa said: "That was an amazing weekend, I learnt so much driving with the best drivers in the world. I had very good pace in the dry and my progress in the wet was good.
"The team and my mechanic Adam did a really good job this week and I'm thankful to them, my parents and all the people back home.'
The Rotax Euro Trophy (often called RMCET) is a major international karting championship for drivers who race using Rotax MAX engines, which are some of the most popular kart engines globally.
Among Formula 1 drivers who have raced in this series in their formative years include reigning world champion Max Verstappen, George Russell, Lando Norris ad current championship leader Oscar Piastri.

Asian Shooting: Indian men's air pistol team clinches silver
Synopsis Indian shooters began their Asian Championships campaign in Shymkent with the men's 10m air pistol team securing a silver medal, narrowly missing gold to China. Anmol Jain finished sixth in the individual event, while Kapil clinched gold in the junior men's category, with Gavin Antony taking bronze. The junior team also won silver. ANI Indian shooters' quest to better their medal tally at the Asian Championships (rifle/pistol/shotgun) began with the men clinching the 10m air pistol team silver, while Faridabad marksman Anmol Jain missed out on an individual medal in the event, finishing sixth here on Monday. The men's team, comprising Anmol (580), Aditya Malra (579) and Asian Games gold medallist Saurabh Chaudhary (576) aggregated a score of 1,735 to finish behind China, who took the gold by amassing 1,744 points. Iran took the bronze, totalling 1,733 points. In the individual men's 10m air pistol section, Anmol, who progressed into the final in seventh place with a qualification score of 580, ended up sixth in the medal round aggregating 155.1 points. Hu Kai of China took the gold with a score of 241.6, while South Korea's Hong Suhyeon and Iran's Amir Joharikhou bagged the silver and bronze with scores of 239.0 and 216.8 respectively. The other two Indian shooters, Aditya (579) and Chaudhary (576) finished 13th and 21st respectively after the qualification round and missed the finals. Interestingly Amit Sharma, a 20-year-old who started competing internationally at as a junior in 2023, beat the 48-strong field to top the qualification round with a superb score of 588. But since he was competing in the 'Ranking Points Only' (RPO) category, he could not make it to the final. RPO shooters participate for rankings and cannot advance to the medal round. Another Indian RPO shooter Varun Tomar shot 584 to end the qualification round in fourth place. Kapil clinched the individual junior men's 10m air pistol gold with a score of 243.0. He shot 579 in qualification to enter the medal round placed fourth. Another Indian Gavin Antony, who also entered the final, shot 220.7 to clinch the bronze medal. The trio of Gavin (582), Kapil and Vijay Tomar (562) aggregated 1,723 points to win the team silver behind South Korea, who amassed 1,734 points. India has fielded 182 shooters across senior, junior and youth categories, which is the country's biggest-ever contingent in the continental meet. Medals are up for grabs in 58 events -- 46 individual and 12 mixed team -- across various categories. The senior India team had bagged six gold, eight silver and five bronze medals to finish third behind powerhouse China, who topped with 14 gold (total 33), and hosts South Korea, who bagged nine gold (total 24), in the previous edition of the continental event in Changwon. Overall, India had finished with 59 medals (21 gold, 22 silver and 16 bronze) in Changwon.

Chetan Sharma backs Bumrah, urges players to follow physios' guidance
Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah may have drawn criticism for playing only three Tests during the series against England to manage his workload, but former BCCI chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma has backed the bowler, saying players should go by the physios' advice as they are the "better judges". The injury-prone Bumrah played the first, third and fourth Tests in the Anderson-Tendulkar five-match series, skipping two matches with Mohammed Siraj leading the pace-bowling attack. Sharma, himself a former pace bowler, said it was akin to a patient having to follow the doctor's advice. "If the medical team advises, if the doctor tells me that I have to take antibiotics, then I have to consume them. "If our physios is telling a player to manage workload, I think we should listen to them because they are the better judges," said Sharma on the sidelines of the country's public service broadcaster Prasar Bharati signing a deal with London-based cricket analytics company CricViz on Monday for the telecast of 104 episodes of "The Great Indian Cricket Show" on Doordarshan. Sharma, who forged a potent partnership with Kapil Dev for nearly half-a-decade and went on to take more than 125 wickets in Tests and ODIs before becoming the chairman of selectors, added that the team's performance in the England Test series gave him confidence that it will win the Asia Cup, which begins in the UAE next month. "I know that whoever is selected will be the best for the country. And the kind of cricket we are playing right now, I'm really proud with the way India played in England. "And I'm very confident that we are definitely going to win the Asia Cup (to be played in T20 format) because soon after that we are playing the T20 World Cup (in 2026) in India. "It's a very big thing when you are playing (the World Cup) in you own backyard. If the intent is right, the results will also be good," said Sharma after the event, which also had the likes of Madan Lal, a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning side, and former India players Murali Kartik and Aakash Chopra and Prasar Bharati Chairman Navneet Kumar Sehgal. On whether Test skipper Shubman Gill, who smashed four centuries during the drawn Test series against England recently, should be included in the Asia Cup side to be led by charismatic batter Syuryakumar Yadav, Sharma said, India should select its best possible 15-member squad for the continental showpiece. "Look, that is up to the selectors what they see. My opinion does not matter because I am no longer the chairman (of selectors), so I will only say that the best possible team should be selected. Top athletes to take part in National inter-state meet in Chennai
With the National inter-state athletics meet at the Nehru Stadium here from August 20 to 24 being the final selection trials for next month's World championships (September 13 to 21), the majority of athletes will be eager to make the cut. So far, only four — Neeraj Chopra (javelin), Gulveer Singh (men's 5000m), Parul Chaudhary (women's 3000m steeplechase), Praveen Chitravel (men's triple jump) — have made it to the Worlds through entry standards. Tamil Nadu Athletics Association first hosted the National inter-state meet way back in 1968. The Senior Nationals were last held here in 2022. Around 700 athletes representing 35 teams from across the country will be taking part in Chennai. Some of the prominent athletes from Tamil Nadu include Praveen Chitravel (triple jump), Vithya Ramraj (400m hurdles), Abinaya Rajarajan (100m), among others, are participating. The other prominent athletes from other states include National javelin throw record holder Annu Rani, Punjab's double Asian Games champion and former Asian shot put record-holder Tajinderpal Toor Singh, three-time Asian silver medalist Tejaswin Shankar (Delhi) in high Jump, Kerala's former Asian champion triple jumper Abdulla Aboobacker and 800m Asian Games silver medallist Muhammed Afsal. Also, elite sprinters Animesh Kujur from Odisha and Amlan Borgohain from Assam, long jump Asian silver medallist Murali Sreeshankar from Kerala, ace hurdlers Tejas Shirse (Maharashtra) and Pragyan Sahu (Odisha) are among the few top names who are in the fray.
