Another racist attack in Ireland: Indian girl, 6, hit in private parts, punched in face

Hindustan Times5 days ago
In another racist attack against Indians in Ireland, a six-year-old girl was assaulted by a group of children earlier this week. As per local reports, the six-year-old Indian girl was punched in the face and hit in the private parts as the attackers shouted "go back to India." The rise in attacks also prompted the Indian embassy in Dublin to issue an advisory and emergency helpline numbers of Indian nationals in the country.(Reuters/Representational)
Speaking to the Irish Mirror, the girl's mother shared that the attack took place on Monday - August 4. The little girl's mother added that the attack took place while the 6-year-old was playing outside her home with friends.
According to the mother, the gang of children who attacked her daughter included a girl aged around eight and several boys between 12 and 14.
Six-year-old girl assaulted, called 'dirty Indian'
"She told me five of them punched her in the face. One of the boys pushed the bicycle wheel onto her private parts, and it was really sore. They said the F word and 'Dirty Indian, go back to India. She told me today (Wednesday) they punched her neck and twisted her hair," the mother, who recently became an Irish citizen and has been a nurse and living in Ireland for eight years, told The Irish Mirror.
Following the attack on her daughter, the Indian nurse shared with the Irish daily a few racist incidents she had experienced in the eight years she has been in the country.
The Dublin-based news outlet reported that the attack took place when the mother went back inside to feed her 10-month-old baby.
"I told her I would be back in a second after feeding the baby," she said, adding that the girl came back home upset.
"She was very upset, she started crying. She couldn't even talk, she was so scared," the mother added further.
The nurse, who has been living in Ireland for around eight years now, said that she saw the group of boys involved in the assault. However, she added that the boys just stared at her in a confrontational manner.
"I saw the gang afterward. They were staring at me, laughing. They know I am her parent. The boys were maybe 12 or 14, and they were still roaming around here," she said.
The Indian woman has filed a complaint with Garda police. Despite the brutal assault on her daughter, the woman is not seeking a punishment for the boys, but is hoping they receive the counselling and guidance they need.
Attacks against Indians on the rise
There has been an uptick in racist attacks against Indians in Ireland. The rise in attacks also prompted the Indian embassy in Dublin to issue an advisory and emergency helpline numbers of Indian nationals in the country.
In July, at least three attacks against Indians in Ireland were reported. In Tallaght, an Indian man was assaulted by a group of 10 teenagers. The gang stabbed the man in the face multiple times during his walk to the local temple.
In Dublin, an Indian man in his 20s was attacked by teenagers at a tram stop. As per reports, the man was pushed, beaten, and stabbed in the face with a screwdriver.
In another incident in Dublin, Dr Santosh Yadav, a senior data scientist, was returning to his apartment when six teenagers attacked him from behind.

Slapped, punched and bitten: The horrific assault of a 15-month-old inside a Noida daycare centre

A 15-month-old girl was brutally assaulted by a nanny at a Noida daycare, with the incident caught on CCTV. The daycare owner allegedly did nothing to intervene. Police have arrested the nanny read more The parents also allege that despite their daughter's cries, the daycare owner, Charu, made no attempt to help or protect her. Image for Representation A 15-month-old girl was brutally assaulted by a nanny at a daycare in Noida's Sector 137, in an incident that has left parents across the city horrified and questioning the safety of childcare facilities. The assault, which was caught on CCTV, shows the toddler being slapped, bitten, dropped to the ground twice or thrice, and beaten with a plastic bat. Shockingly, the daycare owner was allegedly present but did nothing to intervene. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Here's what happened The shocking assault at Noida daycare Monica and Sandeep Kumar, parents of the 15-month-old girl, had been sending their daughter to the daycare in Sector 137 since May 21. Sandeep, who works in the IT department of a UK-based multinational company, had made sure to check the safety arrangements himself before enrolling her, including confirming that five CCTV cameras were installed across the premises. The daycare, run by the residents' association, is one of many such facilities operating in residential complexes across Delhi NCR. Charu, the daycare's owner, personally assured the couple of their child's safety. 'Before sending our daughter, we had checked all safety measures at the daycare. There were five CCTV cameras in all rooms, the hall, and kitchen areas. The owner assured us during admission that it's the daycare's responsibility to keep every child safe,' Sandeep told The Times of India. But on Monday, when Monica went to pick up her daughter, something felt wrong. The toddler was crying uncontrollably and seemed unusually distressed. Later, while changing her clothes, Monica spotted circular marks on both of her thighs. 'My wife asked the teachers about the bite marks, but was told she had some infection from home. She ran to a doctor immediately. The doctor confirmed it wasn't an infection, but marks of human teeth. He also told my wife that it appeared our daughter had been tortured because she was visibly scared. My wife came home and informed me. I left office without any delay,' Sandeep recalled. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD When they confronted the daycare owner, she flatly denied that any abuse had occurred. The couple requested CCTV footage to verify what had happened, but getting access proved to be an uphill battle. According to The Times of India, the staff claimed there were 'technical issues,' missing applications, and even snapped wires that delayed them from handing over the footage. The parents say the daycare kept stalling for four days until police intervened on Thursday. When the couple finally saw the recordings, they were horrified. The footage showed the attendant, Sonali, a teenager from Shahdara village, mercilessly punching the child, pushing her off a swing, dropping her onto the floor, beating her with a plastic bat, and even inserting a pencil into her mouth. A horrific video from a daycare in Noida has surfaced, showing a woman worker hitting and biting a 15-month-old toddler. A case against her was registered, and she was arrested. — Vani Mehrotra (@vani_mehrotra) August 11, 2025 STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The parents also allege that despite their daughter's cries, the daycare head, Charu, made no attempt to help or protect her. Instead, they claim both the maid and the owner hurled abusive language and issued threats when confronted. What's next? Following the parents' complaint, police from Noida's Sector-142 station registered a case, conducted a medical examination of the toddler, and arrested the accused maid. Charges have been filed under sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Following the parents' complaint, police from Noida's Sector-142 station registered a case, conducted a medical examination of the toddler, and arrested the accused maid. File image/PTI In a disturbing twist, Sandeep told NDTV that another family in the same residential complex has now come forward, claiming their child also suffered abuse at the daycare. They, too, plan to file a police complaint. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'I want action against the daycare owner and the attendant so that such an incident does not happen with another child. These were very tough days. I could not go to work. My wife could not sleep,' Sandeep said, describing the emotional toll of the ordeal. With input from agencies

Journalist or terrorist? Who was Anas al-Sharif, the Al Jazeera reporter killed by Israel airstrike in Gaza?

Israel has admitted to a targeted strike on a tent outside Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza, targeting 28-year-old Anas al-Sharif, a well-known reporter for Al Jazeera. The IDF claims he was the 'head of a terrorist cell in Hamas'. However, the news outlet has denied these claims. What's the truth? read more Journalist or Hamas leader? That's the question many are asking after an Israeli airstrike killed Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif along with four other journalists, as they were resting inside a tent for the press outside Al-Shifa Hospital's main gate in Gaza. Shortly after the strike, the Israeli military stated that they had targeted al-Sharif, who they labelled as a 'terrorist', saying he had 'served as the head of a terrorist cell in Hamas'. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD However, Al Jazeera has refuted these claims and in a statement said, 'The order to kill Anas al-Sharif, one of Gaza's bravest journalists, along with his colleagues, is a desperate attempt to silence voices ahead of the occupation of Gaza.' The 'targeted assassination' was 'yet another blatant and premeditated attack on press freedom,' it further said in a statement. But who was al-Sharif? What exactly occurred on Sunday night? How dangerous is Gaza for journalists? We explore this and more. Israel's airstrike on Sunday night On Sunday night, as journalists rested in a tent outside the Al-Shifa's main gate, Israel launched an airstrike targeting it. A total of seven people have died, including al-Sharif and five other journalists. The other journalists have been identified as Mohammed Qreiqeh, cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa. Al Jazeera, the Qatar-based news outlet said that the slain journalists 'were targeted in their tent, they weren't covering from the front line'. Shortly after the airstrike, another Al Jazeera correspondent Hani Mahmoud, who was just a block away at the time, said: 'This is perhaps the hardest thing I'm reporting about the past 22 months. I'm not far from al-Shifa hospital, just one block away, and I could hear the massive explosion that took place in the past half an hour or so, near al-Shifa hospital. 'I could see it when it lit up the sky and, within moments, the news circulated that it was the journalist camp at the main gate of the al-Shifa hospital.' Al-Sharif and his colleagues have been reporting from Gaza since the beginning of the conflict. He further added that the reporters were killed 'because of their relentless reporting on the starvation and the famine and the malnutrition' suffered by Palestinians in Gaza, 'because they're bringing the truth of this crime to everyone'. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Palestinians inspect the site of an Israeli strike where Al Jazeera says its journalists Anas al-Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqeh and three photojournalists were killed, in Gaza City. Reuters Anas al Sharif: A journalist constantly threatened Twenty-eight-year-old al-Sharif was a well-known Gaza-based journalist who reported extensively from the northern part of the Strip for Al Jazeera Arabic. Prior to his work with the news outlet, he graduated from the media faculty at Al-Aqsa University in Gaza City. In 2018, he received the Best Young Journalist Award in Palestine for his reporting in Gaza. Following the October 7, 2023 attack resulting in the Israel war in Gaza, al-Sharif became Al Jazeera's most recognisable faces working on the ground in Gaza, providing daily reports in regular coverage. In December 2023, al-Sharif lost his father when Israel launched an airstrike on the Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza City. At that time, he promised to continue his work. 'Despite all of this, and despite the targeting of my home and the killing of my father, I will continue to cover from Jabalia refugee camp and from northern Gaza,' al-Sharif had said. Early this January, after a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, al-Sharif drew widespread attention when, during a live broadcast, he removed his body armour while surrounded by dozens of Gaza residents celebrating the temporary halt in hostilities. A few minutes before his death, al-Sharif posted on X: 'Breaking: Intense, concentrated Israeli bombardment using 'fire belts' is hitting the eastern and southern areas of Gaza City.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In a final message, which Al Jazeera said had been written on April 6 and which was posted to al-Sharif's X account after his death, the reporter said that he had 'lived through pain in all its details, tasted suffering and loss many times, yet I never once hesitated to convey the truth as it is, without distortion or falsification.' 'Allah may bear witness against those who stayed silent, those who accepted our killing, those who choked our breath, and whose hearts were unmoved by the scattered remains of our children and women, doing nothing to stop the massacre that our people have faced for more than a year and a half,' he continued. An undated photo shows Al Jazeera correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh standing outside a journalist tent at the entrance of al Shifa hospital in Gaza. Image Courtesy: anasjamal44/Instagram Al-Sharif now leaves behind a wife and two children. Notably, his killing comes a month after the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a non-profit organisation, had expressed worry for his safety and that he feared for his life after he was the target of 'an Israeli military smear campaign, which he believes is a precursor to his assassination.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Israel calls al-Sharif Hamas terrorist In confirming the strike on Sunday, Israel claimed that al-Sharif 'served as the head of a terrorist cell in the Hamas terrorist organisation and was responsible for advancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and Israel Defense Forces (IDF) forces'. It claimed it had intelligence and documents found in Gaza as proof but didn't outline exactly what evidence they had. In a post on X, they wrote, 'A press badge isn't a shield for terrorism.' Prior to the strike on Sunday, Israeli IDF spokesperson Avichai Adraee shared a video of al-Sharif on X and accused him of being a member of Hamas' military wing. — افيخاي ادرعي (@AvichayAdraee) July 24, 2025 However, al-Sharif had disputed these claims, stating on X, 'I reaffirm: I, Anas Al-Sharif, am a journalist with no political affiliations. My only mission is to report the truth from the ground — as it is, without bias,' he wrote. 'At a time when a deadly famine is ravaging Gaza, speaking the truth has become, in the eyes of the occupation, a threat.' And following Sunday's strikes, other activists and organisations have condemned Israel, saying there was no proof to link al-Sharif to Hamas. Muhammed Shehada, an analyst at the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, said there was 'zero evidence' that al-Sharif took part in any hostilities. 'His entire daily routine was standing in front of a camera from morning to evening.' Palestinians hold the body of Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif, who Israel's military and Al Jazeera say was killed by an Israeli strike, in Gaza City. Reuters Danger to journalists in Gaza The death of al-Sharif and other correspondents in Gaza is yet another example of the perils journalists face while reporting from the besieged enclave. According to the CPJ, 186 journalists have been confirmed killed since the start of Israel's military offensive in Gaza in October 2023. Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said in early July that more than 200 journalists had been killed in Gaza since the war began, including several Al Jazeera journalists. In fact, a number of Al Jazeera journalists have been killed in Gaza. In late July, Ismail al-Ghoul and his cameraman Rami al-Rifi were killed in an IDF airstrike. Chief correspondent Wael al Dahdouh's wife, son, daughter and grandson were killed in October 2023 and he himself was injured in an attack weeks later that killed Al Jazeera cameraman Samer Abu Daqqa.
