Generation game as family trio from West Lothian set to visit every SPFL club ground in 24 hours

Graeme, Colin, and 11-year-old Cole Cunningham will take on the 720-mile challenge to raise money for three causes
Three generations of a family from West Lothian are set to visit the grounds of all 42 SPFL club in a 24-hour challenge.
Graeme Cunningham from Fauldhouse, his dad Colin, 66, and his 11-year-old son Cole, who lives in Bathgate will depart from Annan on the 720-mile trip next month to raise money for three worthy causes.

Graeme, 38, a bus driver with Lothian Country and self-confessed 'fitba geek', hopes to raise at least £3,000 to be split equally between baby-loss charity SiMBA, Scottish Autism, and for Cole's team - Bathgate Thistle Community FC.

All three are close to Graeme's heart, as he explained: 'I've done stuff for SiMBA before, I knew nothing about them until I lost my daughter Rebecca-Rose who was still-born in 2013, and they helped me and my family then.
'We were in the Royal in Edinburgh and they told me, and my partner at the time, about memory boxes and the tree of tranquillity they have. We have the wee keepsakes to look back on. I was 24 and looking forward to my first wean arriving, you're a bit naïve going into it and you don't expect anything to go wrong.
"It was literally 10 days before her due date. You just don't think of anything like that.
'Cole's football team, I've seen how much it has brought him on and all the other wee boys on with their confidence. It's just a great set-up they have and they put a lot of work and time into the boys and girls there. They are always looking for some help so I thought it would be nice to give back to them.
'The third one is Scottish Autism, my wee sister's oldest daughter Evie, who is four, has had an autism diagnosis and out of that it's educated us a bit more. It's helped me, as I had a situation in my job recently where a wee boy was stranded.

"I could tell he was autistic because of my niece I knew what to do to help, probably before I wouldn't have known what to do. I'm quite close to my sister and my niece loves me to bits, so I thought it would be nice to give back to them as well.'
Graeme, Colin and Cole will leave from Annan Athletic's Galabank Stadium at 3pm on Friday, July 18 and aim to finish their trip on the Saturday in Dingwall before 3pm, kick-off time.
'It's something that's always been on my bucket list to try and go and visit all the stadiums,' Graeme revealed. 'I watch the guy on Footy Adventures and stuff like that, and this 24-hour thing came into my head and I thought I'd try it, then I thought it might be a bit ambitious.

'We've planned it out and if you went through every one and never stopped you can do it in about 18 hours, but we're going to stop and get pictures and I've contacted all of the clubs. Teams like Ross County, Aberdeen and Edinburgh City have all got back to me. It's still a month away so hopefully more will get back to me.
'We'll be leaving Annan to Queen of the South, along to Stranraer and then up the west coast. We'll do the Glasgow teams and central Scotland. With Hamilton moving to Broadwood we'll do there and then Livingston and Edinburgh, then shoot back to Falkirk, then Fife, Tayside, Aberdeen and the rest.

'I've been to most of the big stadiums but I'm looking forward to some of the smaller ones such as Peterhead, as I've never been there. I've been to Cover Rangers' old stadium but I've never seen the new one.'

St Mirren need to 'defy the odds' again in top-six bid

Stephen Robinson is targeting a fourth consecutive top-six finish with St Mirren this season as they attempt to "defy the odds" Buddies manager believes his side have "raised expectations" and praised his players and staff prior to their opening fixture against champions Celtic on Sunday."You've got to try and do it again. Out with Rangers and Celtic, we're the only team that have had three top-six finishes, that's a huge challenge for us now," said Robinson."The landscape is getting more and more difficult to do this. When you look at the investment into the bigger clubs in the country, in reality, they should all finish in the top six."But football's not played on paper and finance books and we have to upset the odds and be in a position that if somebody doesn't do their job, that is expected of them, that we're able to take advantage of that, which we've done the last three seasons."I have huge belief in the players. We've got a core of players who have done that over the last three years. Probably 14, 15 of them have been regularly involved in that and we believe we've added more quality, more pace and different options from the bench as well that perhaps we didn't have."You need a little bit of luck, you need a little bit of fortune to go your way and if it does, why not try and do it four years in a row?"It seems to be that we are expected to get top six and people are talking that we should be challenging for Europe."That certainly isn't based on the infrastructure or the finances of the football club. It's based on the players and that's credit to them."Credit to the staff, the support staff as well because we've got a very small support staff who do a lot of work in the background that people don't see."Together as a small team but a very good team, we believe we've raised the expectations and we need to do the same again, we need to defy the odds."

Robinson on 'upsetting odds', raising expectations & tough start

Stephen Robinson has been speaking to the media before St Mirren's opening-day trip to champions Celtic on are the key lines from his press conference:He says St Mirren start the season with the "core of a very, very good squad" after getting in the players they wanted, but it will "take a bit of time for everyone to gel and get up to speed".Robinson is targeting a fourth consecutive top-six finish but insists it will be "a huge challenge" and the Buddies have to "upset the odds" as their finances are below what some other clubs a small squad and staff Robinson insists St Mirren have "raised the expectations" and "people are talking that we should be challenging for Europe".He praised youngsters Evan Mooney and Fraser Taylor and believes he has "21 game-ready players for the first team".On facing champions Celtic on the opening day after playing them on the final day of last term: "We're there to spoil the flag day, we're not there to make up numbers. I'd like to think that Brendan [Rodgers] knows we will come and we will have a real go and try and put them under pressure."The Paisley side face Celtic, Rangers and Hibs in three of their first four games but Robinson isn't worried by the tough start: "If you watch my teams play, they don't play with fear. We play on the front foot, we press every team. We've got real energy, pace and creativity. We certainly don't fear anybody, we embrace it and we look forward to it."He is pleased with the new recruits but is "always looking", although to find players that will enhance their starting XI is "very, very difficult".

‘I owe certain pundits an apology' – David Martindale makes major admission to Celtic hero Chris Sutton

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) DAVIE MARTINDALE admits Chris Sutton was right to slag off Livingston's plastic pitch. The sheepish Lions boss only realised how bad the old surface had become when their new pitch was laid a few weeks ago. He said: 'I owe certain media pundits a wee bit of an apology and maybe the SPFL. 'I owe certain parts of the media an apology for the last two years and I'll explain why. 'Chris Sutton had a bit of a go about the park. Do you know what? I now agree with him. 'When the pitch got put down in 2018 I was the one constant that has always been here. 'I never saw the deterioration in the pitch, really. 'I had a bit of a go at the SPFL at the tail end of last year too, saying I couldn't believe they were telling us we're not getting any Premiership football on that pitch. 'Now that we've got a new surface, I need to apologise because I was wrong. 'The most senior players here who have played or been everywhere, they are all coming to me absolutely glowing about our new surface. 'Did I still think the park we had last year was better than some grass parks I've played on? Yes, 100 per cent. I'm not going into my work relegated, says defiant Livingston boss David Martindale as they're left TEN points adrift 'But can I see the pundits and media gripes about it previously? I would agree with them. 'I was in here and I was working on it, so it was hard for me to see the wood for the trees. I genuinely believed the last couple of years our surface was OK. 'I was wrong in that assertion.' Martindale hopes the zippy new pitch could also help his team avoid being shown last on the TV highlights. He added: 'There was a lazy narrative with us previously — big strong, physical Livingston. 'You would see three minutes on Sportscene, and generally we would be last on. 'But I'm not having a go at it. Moment David Martindale swarmed by Livingston fans as he celebrates dramatic comeback with punters during pitch invasion 'That side of it is dictated by your fan base, isn't it? 'We were generally going to be the last on in the programme. 'Our last year in the Premiership was probably more ten bodies behind the ball, a wee bit more direct. 'But now we play a different shape to what we played the last couple of years. 'We actually want teams to come and press us now, but you have still got to find a way to win games. 'I'll be doing that every Saturday, but sticking as much to the basic fundamentals we played last year, and that we coached in the Championship. 'It's essential we don't deviate too far from that.'
