‘Love is love': Punekars stand for diversity at Pride Walk
Co-vice president of the Transgender Welfare Board of Maharashtra Dr Sanvi Jethvani and Protyush Borgohain of Kohler, the sponsor of the March, were the marshals at the event. District Judge Sonal Patil, another invited marshal, could not attend the event. Organisers claimed that over 1,500 people participated in the march.
Addressing the crowd, Jethvani said, 'There is a line by Sane Guruji that goes – the only true dharma is the one that loves everyone. But while giving love we forget that we are humans. This society is stuck in the shackles of genitalia, but today everyone standing here, whether gay or trans, proudly says that we are humans.'
While standing on the podium — adorned with photos of Maharashtra's renowned personalities like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Dr B R Ambedkar, Jyotiba Phule, and Savitribai Phule — Jethvani added, 'I salute you all because you have accepted yourself and you are queer. You need great courage for this. I always say this struggle is not against one but three. First against yourself, then against family, and then against society. If you don't win against yourself, how can you fight others?'
Various social organisations like Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti, Family Planning Association of India, and National Legal Services Authority were also present at the march with their banners. Employees of corporations like Kohler, Cummins, and Deutsche Bank could be seen at the march donning their company's pride merchandise.
Anil Ukarande, founder of Yutak Trust, said, 'We have two objectives for the Pride walk this year. First, we want to thank the Maharashtra Government for reviving the transgender welfare board which had not been really functioning for some time. Second, there was a rise in extortion cases using dating apps. We had approached the Pune police with this issue and the cases have now gone down. So we want to thank the Pune police for that as well.'

MANS again questions CBI for not appealing acquittals in Dabholkar murder case
The Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti (MANS) on Wednesday has once again questioned why the Central Bureau of Investigation has not appealed the acquittal of three accused in the murder case of Dr Narendra Dabholkar in the High Court. Two accused Sharad Kalaskar and Sachin Andure were found guilty for the murder by a special Pune court in May 2024, but Virendrasinh Tawde, Sanjeev Punalekar and Vikram Bhave were acquitted due to lack of evidence. All accused have links to Sanatan Sanstha. Dabholkar's family had termed the delay in filing the appeal 'inexcusable' in August 2024 as well. At a press conference in Pune on Wednesday presided by Dabholkar's son Dr Hamid Dabholkar, Milind Deshmukh, Nandini Jadhav, Shripal Lalwani, and Anil Velhal, MANS claimed that the masterminds of the murder are still at large and no efforts are being made by the government to arrest them. It said that the court's observation 'Dr Narendra Dabholkar's murder was a well-planned conspiracy to end his ideas' was being ignored. It claimed that action was not being taken against masterminds in the murder cases of Govind Pansare, Prof M Kalburgi, and journalist Gauri Lankesh too. MANS highlighted that the threat to rational activists will remain unchanged until the masterminds are caught. The organisation also demanded that the Anti-Superstition and Black Magic Act, which was enacted in Maharashtra after the murder of Dabholkar, must be implemented across the country, keeping in mind the increasing incidents of witchcraft across the country. This year, the Dr Narendra Dabholkar Memorial Lecture will be delivered by retired Supreme Court Judge Abhay Oak on the topic 'The Constitution of India and Scientific Perspective'. on August 17 at 6 pm at the Sane Guruji Smarak on Sinhagad Road. Retired Supreme Court Judge Hemant Gokhale will preside over the event. A set of 5 books on Dr Dabholkar will be launched by former IPS officer Meeran Chadda-Borwankar on August 20 at 6 pm at the same location. Sharad Baviskar, JNU professor and author of the famous autobiography Bhura, and Prabhakar Nanavati, editor of Narendra Dabholkar Granthamala, will be present as the chief guests.

LoP Adhikari to hold convention against isolation of RG Kar rape and murder victim's parents
West Bengal Leader of the Opposition (LoP) and senior BJP leader, Suvendu Adhikari, on Sunday, has decided to organise a convention in the neighbourhood of the RG Kar rape and murder victim's parents to sensitise people against the alleged isolation of the elderly couple. The decision from the BJP leader came after learning that parents of the RG Kar victim have been isolated in their neighbourhood by members of the Trinamool Congress. LoP Adhikari alleged that the elderly couple have been isolated because they continue to demand justice for their deceased daughter and called for a "Nabanna Avijan" (March to the State Secretariat) on the anniversary of the RG Kar rape and murder incident. "We have come to know that the ruling party (Trinamool Congress) is behaving in this way towards the parents of the victim. I am in touch with the family. Despite our limited capacity, we are thinking of holding a convention against the injustice that Trinamool is doing to the victim's parents," the LoP said. LoP Adhikari, along with other BJP legislators, will organise these conventions to stand in solidarity with the victim's parents in such tumultous times. A BJP insider said on Sunday that such conventions will be held for two days. "Through this convention, LoP Adhikari wants to reach out to every household in the neighbourhood where the victim's parents live. Preparations have started to organise the event at the earliest. As part of the programme, BJP MLAs will hold meetings as well as conduct door-to-door campaign in the area and highlight the ruling party's treatment of the victim's parents," the party insider added. The BJP MLAs will also visit the markets where they can meet a large number of people. Apart from this, a leaflet mentioning the RG Kar Hospital incident and the role of the ruling Trinamool Congress in the incident will be distributed in the area. The Trinamool Congress, meanwhile, took a dig at LoP Adhikari for planning to hold such convention. Trinamool Congress MLA and party's Chief Whip, Nirmal Ghosh, said, "Our party sympathises with the parents of the deceased doctor. It is not true that we have isolated them. It is true that sometimes they go to the BJP, sometimes to the CPM, sometimes to the Maoists. Since they have lost their daughter, I will not say anything about them. But I think there is no need for any convention as the area is peaceful." The RG Kar rape and murder victim's mother was discharged from the private hospital on Sunday afternoon where she was admitted following her injury during Saturday's "Nabanna Avijan". She had to be hospitalised after she fell ill amid police action against the protesters. The victim's mother alleged that she was beaten up by the policemen after she, along with her husband and other protesters, tried to march towards Nabanna (State Secretariat). The victim's mother and the BJP leaders alleged that in the police action, the sacred conch shell-bangle on her wrist, traditionally believed to be the symbolic representation of married Hindu women, was broken. Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma said that they are examining the footage of the CCTV cameras and video footage to ascertain whether the victim's mother was beaten up or not.

Third Pride rally held in Agartala, organisers say government needs to create more awareness about transgender rights
Swabhiman – Tripura LGBTQIA+ Collective organised the third Pride rally of the state on Saturday. Swabhiman, the first registered queer society in the state, had also taken out Tripura's first Pride rally in September 2022. On Saturday, the rally started from the Umakanta Academy grounds and ended at the same spot after traversing important locations in Agartala. Speaking to reporters, Sneha Gupta Roy, one of the rally organisers, said, 'We have held Pride rallies in the past. We had a gap of a year in between; this is our third Pride. Pride rallies are held in all states. Members of the queer community and our supporters joined the rally.' 'Our message in this Pride is that we are equally a part of this society like everyone else. We face the same problems others do. So, we have tried to portray problems of different sections of society, including environmental pollution, and women's education…' Gupta Roy added. Gupta Roy, who is a member of the Tripura Transgender Board, said transgender protection cells were being formed in different districts. 'Once these cells are formed, it will be easier for LGBTQIA+ persons to be involved in discussions (with the government) about our issues,' she added. Swabhiman leader Gupta Roy also commented that the Indian society was still 'backward' and there was a need for the government to create greater awareness on transgender rights. Saturday's rally was joined by hundreds of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other queer individuals waving rainbow flags and placards.
