Time of India2 days ago

Since its launch on March 1 this year, the state police's initiative Gujarat Police - Social Media Monitoring, Awareness and Systematic Handling (GP-Smash) has successfully resolved 310 of the 335 citizen grievances.
The primary goal of the initiative is to listen to citizens' concerns, complaints and suggestions on social media, quickly relay them to the appropriate officer, and resolve them promptly.
A dedicated team of police responds within minutes to posts tagged to Gujarat Police's X handle @GujaratPolice, an official statement said on Thursday. For issues like law and order, traffic problems, prohibition, cyber fraud, bribery or misconduct by govt officials, instructions are given to the relevant range, district or unit head to investigate and take appropriate action. These officials will also also provide updates on the action taken within a time frame, the statement said.
Citing an instance, the statement said that a vigilant citizen's post led to the arrest of an intoxicated person on a moving train before it reached Surat from Bharuch.

Accountant of 5-star hotel chain near Gujarat's Statue of Unity booked for embezzling hotel money

The Gujarat Police on Saturday booked the accountant of a five-star hotel located near the Statue of Unity in Ekta Nagar in Narmada district for allegedly embezzling Rs 51.34 lakh. According to the manager of the Ramada hotel, the accused, Ravikiran Tiwari, allegedly diverted funds into his accounts instead of depositing them in the account of the hotel, following the collection of cash during the contentious financial years. The First Information Report stated that the accused had informed the complainant, Manojkumar Maharaj, the manager of two properties of Ramada chain of hotels in Ekta Nagar, that Rs 51.34 lakh were not reflected in the balance sheets of the hotels for the year 2023-24 as the 'online tag' was pending and would be done shortly. However, the complainant approached the police when the amount was not reflected in the accounts or the balance sheets of the following year, 2024-25. The FIR states, 'During the audit of the balance sheet of the year 2023-24, it came to light that the annual turnover for the financial year was reported as Rs 2.17 crore. However, there was a discrepancy of an amount of Rs 46.74 lakh at Ramada and Rs 4.6 lakh at Hotel Comfort. When we questioned Tiwari, he said that the amount did not reflect due to a pending online tag and would show up in the total soon. However, on May 22, when the balance sheet of the following year (2024-25) was audited, the amount from the previous year did not reflect…' The FIR further states that when the complainant tried to seek an explanation from Tiwari, he refused to take responsibility, allegedly stating that he had already quit the post of accountant. The complainant has said that on checking the accounts registers, it was found that Tiwari had allegedly signed to show that the money had been transferred but the amount was 'never deposited in the bank accounts of the two hotels'. The Kevadia police have booked Tiwari under Indian Penal Code Sections for criminal breach of trust.

Gujarat Congress general secy held over post on Opration Sindoor

The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary, Rajesh Soni, was on Friday arrested by the Gujarat Police Cyber Crime Cell over an alleged objectionable social media post on Operation Sindoor, officials said even as GPCC president Shaktisinh Gohil criticised the move. According to police officials, Soni allegedly made disparaging statements about the Armed Forces in his post. Cyber Crime Cell Superintendent of Police Dharmendra Sharma told The Indian Express, 'Soni was booked under BNS Sections 152 (endangering the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India) and 353 (making, publishing or circulating statements that could lead to public mischief) for demoralising the army.' SP Sharma confirmed that earlier in the day, Soni was detained from his home in Ahmedabad and subsequently placed under arrest. He was produced before court, which then sent him to judicial custody. Demanding 'immediate bail' from Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel for 'social leader and political activist' Rajeshbhai T Soni, GPCC president Shaktisinh Gohil said, 'Last night, just like a terrorist is being caught, Rajeshbhai T Soni was arrested by Gandhinagar Cyber Crime. If we look at the post, the only thing that is clear is that the soldiers of our brave army should get credit for the bravery they have shown and the money from the public treasury should not be used for publicity and … political gains should not be taken in the name of Operation Sindoor.' Soni had uploaded around three to four posts on social media platforms on Operation Sindoor. 'This has been in the minds of all the citizens of the country that the credit for the brave work done by our army should go to them. Seeing the way the government is doing publicity, they have expressed their concern that the soldiers will not get credit. If they only raise their voice for the army or express their concern that they will not get credit, how can it be a crime?' Gohil said. He further said, 'The Supreme Court recently took note of the government's policy of filing cases through misuse of the Gujarat Police and severely criticised the police. I hope the police use wisdom…Rajeshbhai Soni is not a terrorist… he should be released immediately. The entire country and Congress are on the side of the army.' Gohil also put out his statement on the microblogging site X, saying: 'The whole country and the Congress are in favor of the army. If it is a crime to take the side of the army only, then all the Congress workers including me will post and raise their voices in favor of the army. if they have courage, then the government should put all of us in jail.' Gohil's post tagging Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi, Gujarat Police stated, 'When late Manmohan Singh ji was the Prime Minister, many BJP leaders and supporters used to write false things at will, but the Congress government at the Centre or the states did not try to curb the fundamental freedom of expression or register a case' Gohil demanded immediate bail for the political functionary.

Scam valley? Surat men funnel Rs 1,000 crore in global cyber fraud; 89 bank accounts targeted

International cyber criminals transferred over Rs 1,455 crore through 89 Indian bank accounts in just six months, Gujarat Police revealed on Friday. These accounts were provided to the criminals on a commission basis, by three men from Surat, according to police inspector SN Desai. The fraud came to light after the arrest of Kirat Jadwani, Meet Khokhar, and Mayur Italia on May 28. The men were held on charges of cheating and forgery, after police recovered 21 debit cards, 30 cheque books, and six PAN cards issued under different names. Their arrest followed a routine vehicle check in Surat's Udhna area, where an associate was caught carrying fake PAN cards and firm stamps. 'We found the trio had opened 165 bank accounts using documents of people who had applied for personal loans. They gave access to the criminals for cyber crimes including digital arrest, hawala transfer, task fraud, betting, stock market fraud, online cheating and OTP fraud,' Desai said. According to Desai, the accused got in touch with cyber gangs based in Cuba, Thailand, and Malaysia through the messaging app Telegram. In exchange for access to the accounts, they were offered handsome commissions. 'We have so far received details of 89 of these 165 accounts from the bank. All identified accounts have since been frozen after victims lodged complaints,' Desai said. The police believe the fraudsters used a clever trick to get the bank accounts opened, approaching people applying for personal loans and taking their documents, claiming they could help secure the funds. After opening an account using those documents, they would return the papers to the applicant, saying the loan was rejected. 'Since they used to give their own mobile number to get an OTP, the applicant never realised that a bank account had been opened in their name,' Desai explained. "Initially, the gang would lease out each account for a one-time fee of Rs 7 lakh to Rs 17 lakh. As their operations grew, they began charging a 3% to 4% cut of every transaction routed through the accounts. In just six months, the three accused earned Rs 10 crore from commission as the transactions in each of these accounts used to continue all day. The total amount would go up to Rs 30 to 40 crore in each account," he added. The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal has already received nearly 2,500 complaints linked to these accounts, including 265 from Gujarat alone, over the past six months.
