Former finance officer pleads not guilty to RM182,884 CBT charge
KUALA LUMPUR: A former finance officer of a company pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving company funds totalling RM182,884.02.
Siti Nurain Mohamad Ghazali, 37, as the officer entrusted with the company's financial affairs at HDJ Oil Enterprise Kuala Lumpur, was charged with committing the offence by taking the money, which was for payments to suppliers, for her personal use.
The offence was allegedly committed at the Petron Jalan Tun Razak petrol station, between April and December last year.
The charge, framed under Section 408 of the Penal Code, provides imprisonment for up to 14 years, whipping and is liable to a fine, if convicted.
Judge Azrul Darus allowed her bail of RM20,000 with one surety and set June 24 for mention.
Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Amir Hanif Ahijman appeared for the prosecution while Siti Nurain, who has three children, was unrepresented.

KOTA BHARU, June 13 (Bernama) -- The 9th Battalion of the General Operations Force (GOF) has seized RM462,000 worth of goods, including a trailer and 28,000kg of smuggled rice, near Jalan Kampung Air Gatal in Tanah Merah. Malaysian universities urged to offer AI programmes, set up AI faculties
TAWAU: The Ministry of Higher Education has called on all universities in the country to offer programmes or establish faculties related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), in preparation for the growing demand for AI talents across various industries. Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has taken the lead in AI education by establishing the country's first AI faculty. 'We have made it clear that all universities should offer and open faculties and programmes related to AI, and the government will continue to monitor the latest developments in this field. 'In addition to AI, we are also seeing new developments in quantum technology,' he told reporters after officiating the appointment ceremony for the chairman of the Sabah Community College Advisory Committee, here today. He said the Ministry is also ready to offer AI-related courses at community colleges nationwide. 'Community colleges will not be bound by rigid course content and will be open to emerging fields. This will enable graduates to be more employable, as their skills are aligned with current market demands,' he said. At the same time, Zambry said the government would review the viability of community colleges that are no longer active or reassess the programmes offered at the inactive colleges. 'This is because some colleges are offering programmes that are not well-suited or have not received good response from the local community or students,' he said. Commenting on the water supply issue at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Zambry said he hoped that the issue could be resolved by the state government, as the ministry and the federal government have channelled RM5 million, including for the construction of underground piping. 'At the UMS level, we are not facing any problems. However, there may be other technical issues, either in terms of the pipeline or the supply volume of water needed for the university's main pipelines,' he added. Zambry also announced an allocation of RM50,000 for each of the nine community colleges in Sabah to support the implementation of various activities.

Three jailed for aiding organised crime
KOTA KINABALU (June 13): Three men were sentenced to five years in prison by the High Court here today for assisting an organised crime group in committing a serious offence for material gain. Sugumaran K. Ponniah, 56, a self-employed man; Hasran Magin, 46, a fisherman; and Subramaniam Thangavelu, 56, a teacher, pleaded guilty to charges under Section 130W of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years upon conviction. The trio committed the offences between April 26 and July 4, 2024, at a bank branch in the city. The court ordered their sentences to run from the date of their arrests. Sugumaran was represented by counsel Dominic Chew, Hasran by Azhier Farhan Arisin, and Subramaniam by Datuk Ram Singh and Prem Elmer Ganasan. Meanwhile, seven other individuals — contractor Josepin J. Langkan, 38; pensioner Nasir Abdul Rasid, 60; bank managers Irene Chin Nyuk Thien, 38, and Christina @ Caroline Pianus Etip, 53; Vireonis Jonok, 35, unemployed; pensioner Leong Hin Ping, 62; and Mazlani Jenuary, 53, unemployed — will have their cases mentioned on July 18. They are separately charged under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code with being members of the organised crime group, allegedly led by Josepin. The charge provides for imprisonment of between five and 20 years upon conviction. The alleged offences occurred at the same bank branch between April 26 and July 10, 2024.
