Mobile market ‘in danger' after federal grant freeze
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The future of a grocery store on wheels is in danger.
The Eat Well Sioux Falls Mobile Market makes stops in the city five days a week. The stops include a senior living community and schools.

But now the nonprofit operating the pilot project is trying to figure out what's next after the news about a federal grant.
The Eat Well Sioux Falls Mobile Market is grappling with a tough question right now.
'Right now we're in that phase of 'What the heck are we going to do?'' Sioux Falls Thrive President Michelle Erpenbach said.
Last year, Sioux Falls Thrive was awarded a USDA Business Builder Grant for $50,000. The money would be used to pay one salary of the mobile market's two-person staff.
'It was coming in three payments, and we have used the first payment which was $20,000,' Erpenbach said.
Recently, Erpenbach got some unexpected news from an organization that assists with the USDA grant, alerting Thrive of a funding freeze.
'I got an email from a contractor is Minnesota saying don't spend anymore money,' Erpenbach said.

The news puts the mobile market in a tricky situation.
'This project is in danger,' Erpenbach said.
The mobile market opened in 2023. The goal was to make food more accessible and affordable.
Erpenbach says today about 60 percent of the shoppers are returning customers.
'People are really figuring out that this is something that works for them,' Erpenbach said.
Sioux Falls Thrive took on the mobile market as a pilot project with the hopes the grocery store would change hands someday.
'The greatest ending to this story would be someone to raise their hand and say, 'You know what? We'll support this and make it happen.' We've been working toward that for three years on this project that it would go on to either be its own nonprofit or supported by another nonprofit. So far that hasn't happened,' Erpenbach said.
In a recent Facebook post, Fruit of the Coop in Brandon announced its USDA Business Builder grant had been frozen.

Rapid City and Black Hills towns see population boom
Rapid City, S.D. (KELO) — Since 2020, many cities in the Black Hills have seen their populations rise. Rapid City has seen an increase each of the last five years, a trend that looks to continue. Back in 2020, just under 75,000 people called Rapid City home. Since then, that number has grown by 10,000. 'It always starts with a visit so we have to have great hospitality and a great welcome mat. And I think it's the people here that make us special. So when we are friendly and when we are accommodating, especially compared to other communities. I think that is a really great first impression for people who are looking to call Rapid City or even South Dakota home.' Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun said. Kevin Hess and his family moved to Rapid City a few years ago. 'A couple of reasons, one job opportunity, I teach at Rapid City Christian as there was an opportunity there to teach and we do have family in the area. Brother and his family live in Sturgis and so they've got two young boys and it's good to be near them again and get to see all their stuff and be part of their events.' local Kevin Hess said. In addition to Rapid City, other locations such as Spearfish, Box Elder, and Hot Springs have seen their populations increase by 10% or more over the same timeline. 'So if you love adventure, it is found here. The beauty in the Black Hills, everybody knows, it is amazing. So you have an advantage of living in the city with all of its amenities and services, and also having very quick access to the Black Hills and really remarkable views.' Salamun said. 'More of an opportunity for them to stretch their legs a little bit and get to do some more stuff. You know, again just the diversity. There's a little more diversity in Rapid City, diversity of thought, diversity of beliefs and me personally I enjoy that.' Hess said. Both Rapid City and Box Elder are expecting even more new residents over the next few years as the Ellsworth Air Force Base rolls out their B-21s and an influx of military families to the area. Essential Air Service's funding might be cut
PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) — The Trump administration wants to slash the budget for the federal Essential Air Service program and that could affect three of South Dakota's airports. State Transportation Secretary Joel Jundt briefed the South Dakota Aeronautics Commission about the situation. Roads flood in northeast SD, western MN The program currently is budgeted at $588 million, Jundt told the commission members on Thursday, and Trump wants to reduce the amount by $380 million. 'So that would be a fairly substantial cut relative to that program,' Jundt said. But, he pointed out, the U.S. House version of the reconciliation bill doesn't have that cut in it, while the U.S. Senate has yet to consider it. Jundt said airport managers at the three South Dakota cities that receive EAS subsidies — Watertown, Pierre and Aberdeen – have been in contact with U.S. Sen. John Thune and U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds asking that the cut not be supported. The Trump administration's 46-page outline says this about EAS: 'The EAS program funnels taxpayer dollars to airlines to subsidize half-empty flights from airports that are within easy commuting distance from each other, while also failing to effectively provide assistance to most rural air travelers. Spending on programs is out of control, more than doubling between 2021 and 2025. The Budget reins in EAS subsidies by proposing a mix of reforms to adjust eligibility and subsidy rates to help rural communities' air transportation needs in a more sustainable manner. This would save American taxpayers over $300 million from the 2025 level.' In other action Thursday, the South Dakota commission: Approved state 5% funding participation to accompany Federal Aviation Administration grants for airport projects at Canton, Faith, Vermillion, McLaughlin and Wall.
