Rapid City and Black Hills towns see population boom

Yahoo14 hours ago

Rapid City, S.D. (KELO) — Since 2020, many cities in the Black Hills have seen their populations rise.
Rapid City has seen an increase each of the last five years, a trend that looks to continue.
Back in 2020, just under 75,000 people called Rapid City home. Since then, that number has grown by 10,000.
'It always starts with a visit so we have to have great hospitality and a great welcome mat. And I think it's the people here that make us special. So when we are friendly and when we are accommodating, especially compared to other communities. I think that is a really great first impression for people who are looking to call Rapid City or even South Dakota home.' Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun said.
Kevin Hess and his family moved to Rapid City a few years ago.
'A couple of reasons, one job opportunity, I teach at Rapid City Christian as there was an opportunity there to teach and we do have family in the area. Brother and his family live in Sturgis and so they've got two young boys and it's good to be near them again and get to see all their stuff and be part of their events.' local Kevin Hess said.
In addition to Rapid City, other locations such as Spearfish, Box Elder, and Hot Springs have seen their populations increase by 10% or more over the same timeline.
'So if you love adventure, it is found here. The beauty in the Black Hills, everybody knows, it is amazing. So you have an advantage of living in the city with all of its amenities and services, and also having very quick access to the Black Hills and really remarkable views.' Salamun said.
'More of an opportunity for them to stretch their legs a little bit and get to do some more stuff. You know, again just the diversity. There's a little more diversity in Rapid City, diversity of thought, diversity of beliefs and me personally I enjoy that.' Hess said.
Both Rapid City and Box Elder are expecting even more new residents over the next few years as the Ellsworth Air Force Base rolls out their B-21s and an influx of military families to the area.

Immigration crackdown impacts Myrtle Beach tourism industry

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — As the White House cracks down on immigration, the head of a local immigration services agency claims hotels and restaurants in the Grand Strand are taking a hit, due to a shortage of cleaning staff. Based in Myrtle Beach, A&B Immigration Services assists immigrants on their paths to citizenship, and helps local companies hire seasonal employees during peak tourist season. Most companies A&B works with hire cleaning staff for hotels and restaurants. The owner of A&B, who chose to remain anonymous, told News13 there is not only an uptick in deportations, but also in visa denials. 'The small businesses, like the staffing companies and cleaning companies, they have suffered significant loss. Owners are even closing up their businesses and are looking for employment themselves, because they depend on the international workers during the peak seasons,' she said. 'We noticed this year that a lot of the individuals, whether they're J-1 and H-2b workers that are applying for the work visas overseas, that at the US embassies, there's an uptick in denials.' She emphasized that A&B encourages taking a legal path to citizenship, and claims the immigration crackdown has put up more barriers for legal immigration. 'We dealt with having workers come to the United States legally and going home, and [the immigration crackdown] has an effect on it. [In] a lot of immigration situations, you're talking about undocumented, but it's not only undocumented, it's immigration as a whole,' she said. 'People who are trying to get here legally, they're unable to because of the climate.' The owner of A&B Immigration said because some hotels are struggling to hire cleaning staff, it's become difficult for them to accommodate the number of people booking rooms. A News13 reporter spoke with a hotel manager on Ocean Boulevard, who said there is an 'everything shortage' in the hospitality industry. * * * Shelby Martin is a multimedia journalist who joined the News13 team in May 2025. Investors in Marchex (NASDAQ:MCHX) have seen decent returns of 36% over the past three years

Low-cost index funds make it easy to achieve average market returns. But in any diversified portfolio of stocks, you'll see some that fall short of the average. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the Marchex, Inc. (NASDAQ:MCHX) share price is up 36% in the last three years, that falls short of the market return. Looking at more recent returns, the stock is up 19% in a year. Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business. Trump has pledged to "unleash" American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit. Marchex wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth. Marchex actually saw its revenue drop by 3.9% per year over three years. The modest share price gain of 11% per year suggests holders are sanguine about the falling revenue. As a general rule we don't like it when a loss-making company isn't even growing revenue. You can see how earnings and revenue have changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values). We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. You can see what analysts are predicting for Marchex in this interactive graph of future profit estimates. It's nice to see that Marchex shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 19% over the last year. That's better than the annualised return of 3% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Marchex better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - Marchex has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of. Marchex is not the only stock insiders are buying. So take a peek at this free list of small cap companies at attractive valuations which insiders have been buying.
