Vision Fund Citizen Committee has nominated 14 future projects
Rapid City, S.D. (KELO) — 14 out of 29 projects have been nominated by Rapid City's Vision Fund Citizen Committee. They have a budget of $12 million and will now await the City Council's decision. 45 citations issued for long vehicles parked downtown The Civic Center, now named The Monument, the BMX Park upgrades, and the South and West Community Gym Centers are just a few of the over 100 projects that have been funded through the Vision Fund. The current Citizens Committee was tasked with allocating just over $12 million, with the 29 applicants requesting more than $74 Million in Vision Fund allocations. 'All of these projects, and I can't stress this enough, all of these projects are sensational. They all would have a significant impact on our community and I wish we could fund them all. I wish the mayor would give me $74 million. We did the absolute best I think we could do,' Citizens Committee Chairman John Kaiser said. This committee was formed around mid-spring and were able to tour and discuss these projects thoroughly. 'Great Vision Fund Committee as well as city staff that provided support and really all of the city staff support altogether. You see a lot of parks projects, a lot of sports projects meeting a lot of needs throughout the city. I think it hits the heart and attention of what we wanted for this and so I'm very pleased,' Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun said. Sports projects were highly requested with over 30% being in that category. 'I think that when you look at sports as a whole, whether it's like the skateboarding, which is something completely unique, or baseball or soccer or whatever, it was just for us as a committee, those were the ones we felt were also in the scope of what citizens should recommend,' Kaiser said. One project request that was not recommended was a new indoor sports complex. That project requested $10 million, as new facilities for athletes are needed in town. This nomination list will now rest in the hands of the Rapid City Council after the Vision Fund Citizens Committee's presentation on Monday night. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. 54th Community Cleanup Week
Rapid City, S.D. (KELO) — Garbage bags are filling up around Rapid City as they celebrate Clean Up Week. Groups have been cleaning up trash and other litter across the city in celebration of Earth Day. Witnesses called in Sioux Falls murder trial Each year this week-long event sees thousands of residents doing their part, many who return each year to keep making an impact. 'I think last year about halfway up we generated about 30 full bags of trash alone. Beer cans, diapers, you name it and it's just so sad to see that. So it's important to us to keep it clean,' Weather Tite Exteriors Marketing Manager Hillary Chandler said. Groups typically pick up in some of the 1,700 acres of park space, along highways, and throughout other urban areas rain or shine. 'We had a job to do, knew it was going to be raining, but we did it anyway, that's what really defines South Dakota. Even when it's tough, even when it's dirty you do it anyway. We see people do it on farms and ranches, we see people do that in businesses and in life. It's even displayed in things like cleaning up your community,' Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun said. 'I love it. Honestly, I travel a lot and I see trash on sidewalks and the parks. It's just heartbreaking because we live here and we love it here, and seeing it clean and taken care of, there's nothing more satisfying to me,' Chandler said. This week provides an opportunity for the community to come together and be good stewards of the land. 'Nobody wants to live where it's dirty and messy. They want it to be clean, they want it to be beautiful and here in Rapid City, there's no place more beautiful than Rapid City, it's such a gorgeous city. We have a lot to be proud of so it's really cool to see an entire community come out in great numbers and say no this is our town, we're going to keep it clean,' Salamun said. The city-wide Cleanup Week has been successfully going for 54 years. This Saturday will be the culmination of Cleanup Week with the Earth Day Expo taking place at Western Dakota Tech. Be Cool Campaign off to a great start this winter
Rapid City, S.D. (KELO) — Our drop in temperatures this week impacted people all across KELOLAND. In Rapid City, organizations and churches worked together to help unhoused individuals deal with the frigid temperatures. After months of preparation, those involved in the Be Cool Campaign are seeing the positive results of communication and adapting from years past. 'What we're going through now in this winter, we have implemented lessons learned from years past. That's why where we're at right now we have better communication between all community partners than we've ever had in the past,' RCFD Mobile Medic Captain Ryan Marcks said. House defeats bill for new men's prison 'The patrolling efforts, people going out in the cold, who work for the city, who work in the community, our community partners such as Journey On, those providing the shelter, they're all working together. And the community needs to know, there is collaborative work happening right now and a lot of people in that space. And so we're very grateful for that,' Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun said. The effort involved several community partners, including Journey On, which was out assisting the Mobile Medic helping those struggling in the cold. 'So a few years ago when we inserted Journey On into the equation, it opened up an entire new realm of possibilities. It really again is a force multiplier and benefits not just the city, not just the fire or not just PD, but everyone in the community,' Marcks said. Together, they are keeping everyone safe, no matter how low the temperature falls. As this cold front leaves, the organizations helping those in cold will now take this week's lessons and apply them to the next situation they'll run into. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
