Women's rights pioneer and Ops Lalang detainee Theresa Lim dies at 68, mourned by activists
Malaysiakini cited her son Daniel Jeyachristi Anthony confirming the death at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre over cancer complications.
'She was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma earlier this week. She was too weak to start chemotherapy and deteriorated further,' he was quoted saying.
Lim was formerly detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) during Ops Lalang on October 27, 1987, and released on June 3, 1988.
She had then been involved in All Women's Action Society (Awam) and the Women's Development Collective (WDC).
Her photograph had appeared on The Star's front page on October 28, 1987 recording the ISA detention, labelled 'Miss Lim Chin Chin – Aliran women's leader'.
She later documented her 60-day solitary confinement experience in a published account.
After her release, she had continued her activism to the end of her life.
Former Batu MP Chua Tian Chang today mourned her death, saying her sacrifices had paved the way for today's movements.
'Her unwavering spirit will continue to inspire us forward. Rest well Lim, your legacy lives on in our hearts as well as in the fight for justice,' the activist known as Tian Chua posted on Instagram.
Activist Kua Kia Soong also paid tribute to Lim. They had both been detained under Ops Lalang.
'She suffered torture during her detention, especially during the first 60 days of solitary confinement. The trauma left her with an auto-immune disability that left her unwell for many years,' he posted on Facebook.

Two teens killed after motorcycles crash into lorry in Kota Tinggi
JOHOR BAHRU, July 26 — Two motorcyclists were killed in an accident involving three vehicles at Km60.5 of Jalan Sungai Rengit, Kota Tinggi early today. Kota Tinggi Police chief Supt Yusof Othman said the two men, aged 18 and 19, sustained serious head injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. He said police received information regarding the crash, which involved two Yamaha Y15ZR motorcycles and a lorry at 1.24am. 'The accident is believed to have occurred when both motorcycles crashed into the rear of the lorry. However, the case is still under investigation. 'The victims' bodies were taken to the Kota Tinggi Hospital, while the lorry driver has yet to be traced,' he said in a statement. Obey the rules, Selangor civil servants told ahead of rally
Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari said no circular had been issued on the gathering, but advised civil servants to conduct themselves appropriately. PETALING JAYA : Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari has reminded state civil servants to observe the rules for the public services ahead of tomorrow's 'Turun Anwar' rally. He said there was no need to issue a formal circular barring civil servants from attending, as he believes they are aware of their responsibilities and the limits of their roles. 'They must comply with certain instructions from time to time, whether it is about involvement in politics, offensive comments and others. I believe the civil service code is clear on this,' he told reporters after launching a book festival today. On Sunday, the chief secretary to the government said it was inappropriate for civil servants to take part in the rally 'because the action is not in accordance with the principle of loyalty to king and country'. The Attorney-General's Chambers said on Wednesday there is a legal basis for the directive. Amirudin's comments came in response to a question on whether Selangor civil servants who take part in the rally would face disciplinary action. 'That's up to the department heads. It's not under my jurisdiction,' he said, adding that poor weather and health concerns could also prevent some civil servants from joining the event. Tomorrow's protest at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, will be the first mass rally directly targeting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, with organisers expecting a turnout of over 100,000 people, although police have estimated a crowd of 10,000 to 15,000 people.
