
Swatch sales and profit fall as luxury demand weakens in China
The Swiss watchmaking conglomerate — whose brands include Omega, Blancpain and jeweler Harry Winston — posted a 7.1% drop in sales to 3.06 billion Swiss francs ($3.81 billion), falling short of analysts' expectations.
Operating income also missed estimates, falling to 68 million francs from 204 million francs in the prior-year period.
The profit decline is 'exclusively attributable' to China, including Hong Kong and Macau, the company said in a statement. Swatch expects a recovery in orders during the second half of the year, noting early signs of improvement in e-commerce and reduced retailer inventories.
For more than a year, the company has faced waning demand in China and Hong Kong. The trend has affected the broader Swiss watch industry, which has seen export volumes decline in recent months amid a strong Swiss franc and growing concerns about the global luxury market.
Adding to the uncertainty is the ongoing trade conflict between the United States and Europe. Switzerland is still awaiting approval from President Donald Trump for a trade framework deal.

Trump gambles with reindustrializing the US
Attracting foreign investment to reindustrialize the US has been the main objective of Donald Trump's tariff policy. "Remember the army of millions and millions of human beings screwing in little screws to make iPhones? That kind of thing is going to come to America," promised US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick on April 6, just days after Trump announced so-called "reciprocal" tariffs on April 2. The agreement unveiled on Sunday, July 27, with the European Union includes an additional $600 billion in investments to be made in the US. A few days earlier, Japan committed to invest $550 billion in the US as part of its agreement signed with Washington. These commitments, however, remain vague – both in terms of the time frame and the sectors involved. In recent weeks, several major European groups have announced plans to build factories in the US, raising concerns over reduced activities in Europe and even an increase in offshoring to the US. On July 24, Bernard Arnault, the founder and CEO of the luxury group LVMH, announced that Louis Vuitton would open a fourth manufacturing site across the Atlantic. "For our American customers, buying a Louis Vuitton product 'made in USA' poses (…) no problem at all," Arnault argued in the French newspaper Le Figaro on July 24.

Watches of Switzerland hit by Trump's new 39% Swiss import tariff
Shares of Watches of Switzerland Group Plc fell as much as 6% after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 39% tariff on imports from Switzerland — one of the steepest rates introduced so far in the escalating trade war. The retailer, known for selling Rolex and other Swiss timepieces in the U.K. and U.S., has been hit hardest by the latest tariff measures. Financial markets in Switzerland were closed for a public holiday, initially sparing listed producers such as Richemont and Swatch Group AG from immediate share price reaction. Swiss watch exports had already surged earlier this spring, as Trump threatened a 31% levy. Importers rushed to bring in inventory ahead of potential tariffs, before volumes eased in anticipation of a possible compromise. If the 39% tariff proceeds, it could lead to U.S. retail price hikes of more than 20%, according to analysts at Jefferies led by James Grzinic. However, there remains a possibility that the measure won't be implemented. 'The one-week hiatus until implementation suggests this could be a negotiating tactic,' Grzinic said in a note. Swiss watch exports fell by nearly 10% in May, largely driven by a drop in shipments to the U.S. 'The rise of 'luxury fatigue,' a declining 'feel-good factor' from luxury purchases, and worsening consumer sentiment all contribute to a less optimistic outlook,' Vontobel analyst Jean-Philippe Bertschy wrote in a note last month.
