BBC star 'absolutely buzzing' after 66-1 horse racing winner
The BBC, Channel 4 and Sky Sports Racing broadcaster, has announced plans to retire in July, aged 75, after a 50 year career behind the microphone
Legendary TV broadcaster and commentator Derek Thompson was "absolutely buzzing" after seeing his colours carried to victory at odds of 66-1.
Thompson, who has worked for the BBC, Channel 4 and Sky Sports Racing, has commentated on some of the biggest and most prestigious races all over the world and is believed to be the youngest ever commentator on the Grand National when he made his debut at 22. Late last year he announced that he will retire from the commentators' booth this year and will call his final race in July, the same month he turns 75.
But he enjoyed a rare success as an owner on Monday after the 66-1 success of Cheerleader in a minor event at Redcar. Cheerleader is trained by Tina Jackson, the partner of Thompson's brother Howard, and 'Tommo' owns the three-year-old filly with his wife, Caroline.
Ridden by Jo Mason, she may have been an outsider in the Join Racing TV Now Handicap but the result barely looked in any doubt as she came home three-quarters of a length clear.
"Absolutely buzzing. Our horse, CHEERLEADER, who attracted little attention in the parade ring has just won @Redcarracing at 66-1," Thompson said in a social media post. "She showed lots of promise last year but, ultimately, needed a few months off. What a comeback!! Congratulations to Tina Jackson and @jomason90 for a superb ride."
At the racecourse, he added: 'It was unbelievable. I was absolutely thrilled, it was just a joy to lead the winner in,' said Thompson. 'She's trained by Tina, my brother's partner, and the colours are my old ones that haven't been used for the best part of 40 years.
'Tina looks after them so well. Cheerleader wasn't very well last year. I was involved in the syndicate who owned her (My Future Champion) and they wanted to send her to the sales. Rather than do that, my wife bought her as she fell in love with her. I told her off actually! She was in tears today, watching it on TV.
'She had six months off in a field, we'd go and see her to give her carrots and apples and when Caroline shouted for her, she'd come running over from one side of the field to the other and just stand there eating everything.
'My brother Howard clocks all the horses on the gallops and a couple of days ago he rang to say she'd done a very fast time and he thought we had a chance, so we had a nice each-way at 66-1!'

The 73-year-old reflected on his role in TV drama A Woman Of Substance, adapted from one of the author's most well-known books, in the note that was read out on his behalf. 'It was a landmark moment — the first television drama series to reach more than 13.8 million viewers on Britain's Channel 4 — and something we were all incredibly proud of. 'But more than the numbers, it was Barbara's vision, her storytelling, and her fierce dedication to her characters that made the work so special. 'She was a force — elegant, brilliant and unstoppable — and I feel deeply privileged to have been part of bringing her words to life.' Liam Neeson starred in an adaptation of A Woman With Substance (Ian West/PA) Human rights lawyer Cherie Blair, wife of former prime minister Sir Tony Blair, was also in attendance and reflected on her friendship with the author in a speech. 'I can hardly believe it's been over 20 years since I first met Barbara in New York,' she said. 'Tony and I were attending an event while he was UK Prime Minister. 'Although I can't recall the specifics of the event, I vividly remember meeting Barbara and, of course, her beloved husband, Bob (Robert Bradford). 'Meeting her was such a thrill — not only because I had read her books but also because she was a favourite author of both my mum and grandma. 'Barbara and I instantly connected as Northern girls who had ventured far from our roots, yet never forgot where we came from. 'At the time of our first meeting, Tony had not read any of Barbara's books, but he was so struck by her intelligence, elegance, and charm that he subsequently watched the TV show and read the book. 'Barbara and I stayed in touch, regularly meeting when I was in New York or when she was in London. 'One memory I treasure is attending the Women of Substance Awards with her at the Dorchester in London in 2009. 'The awards were so typical of Barbara — her unwavering support for other women was truly inspiring. She even offered me invaluable advice when I was establishing my own foundation for women. 'Barbara seemed ageless. Whenever we met, she was always engaged, well-informed, feisty and, of course, impeccably dressed. 'She was the epitome of a woman of substance — wise, fun and endlessly inspiring. We will deeply miss her warmth, wisdom and friendship.' In April it was announced that Vera actress Brenda Blethyn will lead a new Channel 4 adaptation of A Woman Of Substance, playing protagonist Emma. The book is a rags-to-riches tale set in the 1900s that follows the life of Yorkshire servant Emma who later heads up a business empire. Taylor Bradford was often labelled 'the grand dame of blockbusters', with her books selling more than 91 million copies and having been published in more than 40 languages and in 90 countries. Other TV adaptations of her books included ITV's Act Of Will starring Elizabeth Hurley and Victoria Tennant, and To Be The Best, a sequel to A Woman Of Substance with Lindsay Wagner and Sir Anthony Hopkins.

The pair won, after competing against five other pairs to race across a total distance of around 8,700 miles (14,000km) between the Great Wall of China, north of Bejing, and Kanniyakumari, the southernmost tip of India. Not only did they win the cash prize of £20,000 after a total of 51 days travelling, the pair also learnt a lot about themselves. During the series Caroline had opened up about how she felt she had lost her identity outside of being a mother and a wife. Thomas however, discussed his struggle with cerebral palsy. Thomas, 21, told the BBC : " 51 days racing through countries that I never thought I'd go to, and never thought we'd come this far, and never thought we'd achieve so much. And I've never been prouder of my mum." However, following the series finale fans of the show took to social media to share their disappointment over the winning pair. Since filming the series the pair from Hargrave near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, Thomas and his 60-year-old mother Caroline have been spending more time together following their challenging stint on the show. Caroline shared: "We now try and have a bit more time for each other. We actually make time to stop and enjoy the simple things together and we are hoping to go travelling again." Fans of the show took to social media to share, who they would have preferred to win the competition. Ultimately, the couple finished in third place - just 45 minutes behind the winners. The pair opened up about their childhood trauma and grew closer as siblings throughout the competition, moving weekly audiences in the process. One person shared on X: "I've never wanted a pair to win #RaceAcrossTheWorld more than Brian and Melvyn, honestly. They rekindled relationship is so lovely and a win would just be perfect." Race Across the World's Welsh star, Sioned Cray, shared a heartfelt post on social media following the fifth series' final episode. Sioned, who competed with her boyfriend Fin Gough, were the youngest contestants to take part in the BBC travel programme. On Instagram, Sioned said she "had no idea" how much a challenge the race would be, but described it as an "amazing opportunity". The couple came third in the race, with mother and son duo Caroline and Tom coming in first place, sisters Elizabeth and Letitia in second and brothers Brian and Melvyn in fourth place. After travelling through China and Nepal, all four teams were hoping to reach the final checkpoint in the southernmost tip of India, Kanyakumari, first and claim a cash prize of £20,000. The teams travelled through seven checkpoints before reaching the final one, without phones, flights or bank cards and only a tight budget of £1,140 per person, a map, public transport and each other to depend on. Welsh couple Fin and Sioned had seen their fair share of challenges along the way, including homesickness and catching up with the other teams when they were hours behind. In an Instagram post following the final episode, which was aired on Wednesday evening (June 11), Sioned shared her thoughts on the journey she had embarked on in the programme. Article continues below Content cannot be displayed without consent With a collection of photos from their travels, she wrote: "From the moment we set off, Fin and I had no idea just how much this race would challenge us, change us and bring us closer together. "We've crossed countries, faced setbacks, ran for buses (too many times), and soaked in moments I'll never forget. "From the laughs to the tears, every mile has meant something. "This was THE most amazing opportunity I've ever had and to be honest I don't think I can ever top it! "We've literally been able to see parts of the world I never dreamed I'd visit! What a wild, emotional, unforgettable ride. "We've experienced so many new things and we met so many amazing people of different cultures and backgrounds. "It was such a valuable experience and I cannot express how grateful I actually am to have been able to be a part of it!" She continued: "But what really stayed with me were the strangers who became lifelines, the people who helped us without hesitation, offered directions, a meal, or just any information when we needed it most. "I've made some lifelong friends in the team and cast, as well as learned so much more about myself and what I can accomplish. "On top of that I now know that any ups and downs me and Fin will face we can obviously overcome it because we completed Race Across the World together successfully (with a few bickers)!!" She concluded with: "I cannot recommend travelling this way more to anyone!
