Insider: Steelers will prioritize T.J. Watt extension, not Minkah Fitzpatrick just yet
T.J. Watt's contract buzz continues to dominate headlines in the Steel City — which has done zero favors for another All-Pro defender's soon-to-expire contract.
T.J.'s older brother, J.J. Watt, argued that the Steelers should have gotten the deal done one year earlier to potentially earn a "hometown discount" — and that's exactly what Pittsburgh could do this season with FS Minkah Fitzpatrick, a notion that insider Gerry Dulac quickly shot down.
During Wednesday's Steelers chat on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Dulac was asked if Watt or Fitzpatrick could be extended before the 2025 regular season began — and this was his response:
"They will try to extend Watt. Minkah not on that list yet."
While Fitzpatrick's splash plays have become quite rare over the past few seasons, he is still more than capable of completely erasing one side of the field in coverage — and the Steelers would be wise to re-sign him before they repeat another Watt mishap.

With Dolphins tight end Smith's future in limbo, agent Drew Rosenhaus addresses the matter
Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith wants a new contract and has been the subject of trade talks with Pittsburgh. While agent Drew Rosenhaus did not specifically address those issues in his weekly TV segment late Sunday night, he made clear that Smith wants to remain a Dolphin. 'Here's what I will say on behalf of my client: Jonnu would definitely like to stay in Miami,' Rosenhaus said on WSVN-7. 'That's his first choice. This is where he lives in the off-season. He had a record-breaking season last year. 'It was the best season ever for a Miami Dolphin tight end... He broke the team record for receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns for a tight end and was the team's single Pro Bowl player. He's an incredibly valuable part of this team... He went to college at FIU. His dream team is the Dolphins. 'Hopefully, everything works out where he can stay in Miami.' The Dolphins spoke to the Steelers after Smith conveyed that he wants a new contract, replacing the one that's due to pay him $4.8 million this season in the final year of a two-year deal. Smith, 29, caught 88 passes for 884 yards and eight touchdowns last season, his first with the Dolphins. Miami has been seeking a trade partner instead of agreeing to Smith's request for a new contract, ESPN reported. If the Dolphins trade Smith and do not get a tight end in return, their tight end room would feature only journeyman Pharoah Brown, Julian Hill, Tanner Conner and undrafted rookie Jalin Conyers. Veteran free agent tight ends still available include, among others, Jordan Akins (40 catches for 390 yards for Cleveland last season) and Hayden Hurst (8 for 73 for the Chargers). Here's a list of the limited number of free agents left at the position. The Athletic reported that the Raiders are open to trading tight end Michael Mayer, whose playing time diminished last year after Las Vegas drafted Brock Bowers, who had the best season for a rookie tight end in NFL history. 'I think Mike's been fantastic since I've been here; we didn't make any decisions on anything until you see him here, and Mike's been fantastic since day one of the offseason program,' Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly said Thursday. If the Dolphins trade Smith for a future draft pick, his Dolphins 2025 cap hit would drop from $4.6 million to $550,000. While Smith ideally would like to remain in Miami, cornerback Jalen Ramsey wants out, with a trade expected in the coming weeks. If Ramsey traded for a future draft pick, his 2025 Dolphins cap hit would drop from $16.7 million to $6.7 million. A trade before June 2 would have resulted in a $25 million Dolphins cap hit for 2025. Miami would have $28 million in cap space if it trades both Ramsey and Smith for future draft picks.

However, he was able to turn that around with a solid bounce-back performance against the San Diego Padres, going 5 2/3, allowing five hits and just two runs, while striking out three. At first glance, it seemed as if the venom Heaney took from the snakes carried onto his start in San Diego, allowing a first-inning home run to Manny Machado. However, that lead lasted for about five minutes, when Randy Vasquez took a beating on the mound. The offense got off to a hot start in the third, posting three runs thanks to a history-making two-run home run from Andrew McCutchen. With that cannonball, he tied Roberto Clemente for third on the Pirates' all-time home runs list with No. 240. Oklahoma beats North Carolina to force winner-take-all game Monday The UNC baseball team faces a must-win game on Monday. The North Carolina Tar Heels' baseball program will be playing for its season on Monday in Chapel Hill. After entering Sunday's regional final with a 2-0 record, fresh off a big win over Oklahoma, the Tar Heels now face a do-or-die deciding game on Monday after falling to the Sooners 9-5 on Sunday night. North Carolina fell behind in the bottom of the third when Oklahoma took a 1-0 lead. They did battle back to tie the game with a run in the top of the fourth, but the Sooners answered back with a run of their own. The Tar Heels then took the lead in the top of the fifth on a Gavin Gallaher two-out double that plated two runs and gave UNC the 3-2 advantage. It was short lived, however. A few walks and then an error allowed Oklahoma to score five runs in the bottom of the sixth and the Sooners didn't look back, grabbing the lead for good. The Sooners got a two-run home run, a double and a single to plate five in that inning, which was the backbreaker for the Tar Heels. Although UNC answered back with two runs in the top of the seventh, the Sooners plated one run in the seventh and eighth innings. They also kept UNC scoreless in the eighth after the Tar Heels loaded the bases with no outs, threatening to tie or take the lead. UNC's pitching struggled, walking nine batters as the Tar Heels used starter Aidan Haugh and five relievers throughout the game. Haugh gave up just the one earned run in 3.2 innings pitched. The Tar Heels' lineup also struggled as the two through six hitters had just four hits with Gallaher having three of those hits. The loss now forces the winner-take-all game on Monday in Chapel Hill with the winner punching their ticket to the super regional. Due to NCAA rules, Oklahoma will be designated as the home team.
