Punjab: 113 peddlers arrested, 2-kg heroin seized
The Punjab Police on Sunday arrested 113 drug smugglers and recovered 2.09-kg heroin, 530-gm opium, 32,679 intoxicating pills and ₹1.8 lakh drug money from their possession as the state government's 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' (anti-drug war) campaign entered 92nd day on Sunday. With this, the number of total drug smugglers arrested has reached to 14,944 in just 92 days.
The operation was conducted on the directions of Punjab director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav simultaneously in all 28 police districts of the state. Divulging details, Special DGP, law and order, Arpit Shukla said over 200 police teams comprising over 1,400 police personnel, under the supervision of 86 gazetted officers, were part of the raiding teams at 461 locations, leading to registration of 83 FIRs across the state. Police teams have also checked 382 suspicious persons during the day-long operation, he added.
Shukla said that with the state government enforcing a three-pronged strategy — enforcement, deaddiction and prevention (EDP)— to eradicate drugs from the state, the police, as part of de-addiction drive, has convinced 92 persons to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment today.
Meanwhile, police teams also conducted checking at 106 pharmaceutical shops in five districts — Fazilka, Ferozepur, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Faridkot and Moga — to ensure they are not selling intoxicating tablets or any other habit-forming drugs.

Allowing a writ petition filed by Anwar Dhebar, a division bench comprising Justice Siddhartha Varma and Justice Madan Pal Singh granted him bail in the FIR lodged against him at Kasna police station of GB Nagar in 2023. The court sent this judgment to the office of the director general of police (DGP), UP, directing him to get it circulated among all the police personnel of the state of Uttar Pradesh. "We are getting this circulation done as a technical error in many of the arrests is resulting in the declaration of the arrests as illegal", the court added. According to this FIR, M/s Prizm Holography Security Films Pvt Ltd, a company based in Site-5, UPSIDC, Greater Noida, was allegedly granted a tender illegally by the Chhattisgarh Excise Department in 2019 to supply holograms meant to ensure liquor authenticity. However, in connivance with top state officials, the firm supplied duplicate holograms, facilitating the sale of illicit country liquor from state-run shops. Senior IAS and ITS officers named in the case included Arunpati Tripathi (Special Secretary, Excise), Niranjan Das (Excise Commissioner), and Anil Tuteja. Also named are Anwar Dhebar, brother of the then Raipur mayor, and Vidhu Gupta, managing director of Prizm Holography. Almost 11 months later, on June 18, 2024, Dhebar, who had been granted bail by the Chhattisgarh high court at 9.20 PM in a separate case was arrested immediately by the Uttar Pradesh Police just 20 minutes later in Raipur itself. Following the arrest, the UP investigation officer (IO) applied for a transit remand under Section 167 of the CrPC before the Magistrate at Raipur, which was granted for 48 hours. Subsequently, on June 21, 2024, Dhebar was produced before the Special Judge (Prevention of Corruption Act), Meerut, who remanded him in judicial custody till July 1, 2024. This happened despite the petitioner having specifically objected to the arrest, arguing that it was in violation of Articles 19(1) and 22(1) of the Constitution of India, as well as section 50 of the CrPC, which mandates communication of the grounds of arrest, Dhebar's lawyer said. He then moved the high court, seeking a declaration that his arrest was illegal and void, and further prayed for the quashing of all subsequent remand orders. On the other hand, the additional advocate general for the state submitted that since there was a memo of arrest and the son of the petitioner had been informed about the arrest, it could not be said to be illegal, as the reasons were known to the petitioners. The court observed that the arrest memo did not contain any column stating the reason for arrest. Furthermore, no opportunity of hearing was given to the petitioner to oppose the custodial remand. Thus, the court concluded 'with some certainty' that the petitioner was never furnished with the grounds of arrest, as mandated under Section 50 CrPC (now Section 47 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita). Thus, the court declared arrests illegal, however, it refused to interfere with the charge-sheet, which has been submitted. The court clarified that the court may continue with the proceedings in accordance with law as per the charge-sheet.

Gagan was activated to share information during Op Sindoor: SSP Rana on arrest Tarn Taran man
Tarn Taran (Punjab) [India], June 3 (ANI): Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abhimanyu Rana revealed that Gagandeep Singh alias Gagan, a resident of Tarn Taran, was arrested for allegedly sharing sensitive information with Pakistani intelligence officers. While speaking to ANI on Tuesday, SSP Rana informed, 'According to the directions of Punjab CM and DGP, Tarn Taran police constantly busts the drug and terror nexus. We received information that Gagandeep Singh alias Gagan is in touch with a Pakistani intelligence officer.' According to SSP Rana, Gagan has been in touch with Pakistani intelligence officers for the past five years. His main handler is Gopal Singh Chawla, a Khalistani based in Pakistan. 'Investigating the same, a team of police carried out an operation and recovered two mobile phones in which, contact numbers of over 20 Pakistani officers were present, and he had also initiated talks with Gopal Singh Chawla. He (Gagan) has been in touch with Pakistani intelligence officers for 5 years...' SSP Rana said. During Operation Sindoor, Gagan was activated to share information about Indian army movements, and investigations revealed that he was sharing sensitive information such as photos and videos. 'When Operation Sindoor started, he was activated to share information about the movement of the Indian army, and after checking his phone, it was revealed that he was sharing a lot of sensitive information with Pakistani officers, sending them photos and videos and was active all the while... His main handler is Gopal Singh Chawla, and his passport was made in 2018.' SSP Rana added. Further investigation revealed that money was transferred to Gagan's account from a foreign country 7-8 times, with increased activity over the past three months. Furthermore, an FIR has been registered against Gagan under the Official Secrets Act, and further investigation is underway. SSP Rana said, 'We are extracting details on whether he travelled to foreign countries or Pakistan... According to the details of his accounts, it was found that money was transferred to his account from a foreign country 7-8 times... His activity had increased over the past 3 months... We are trying to know if he was working as a sleeper cell... FIR has been registered against him under the Official Secrets Act, and his remand will be taken today, and further investigation will be conducted... He was a drug addict, but we will investigate if he was also getting consignments (from Pakistan).' Earlier, in a post on X, DGP Punjab Police shared information stating that Gagandeep had been in touch with the ISI and Gopal Singh Chawla, sharing classified details concerning army movements during Operation Sindhoor. On May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor as a decisive military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists in which 26 people were killed. Indian Armed Forces targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, leading to the death of over 100 terrorists affiliated with terror outfits like the Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. Man arrested in Punjab on charges of spying for Pakistan during Operation Sindoor
The Punjab Police on Tuesday arrested a man from Tarn Taran district for allegedly spying for Pakistan's intelligence agency and leaking sensitive information about Operation Sindoor. Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav claimed that the man, identified as Gagandeep Singh, posed 'a threat to national security' after allegedly sharing sensitive details about troop deployments and military locations in lieu of money during India's military strikes on Pakistan. Yadav also alleged that Singh had been in contact with Pakistan-based Khalistani supporter Gopal Singh Chawla for the past five years and was introduced to Pakistani intelligence operatives through him. The police recovered a mobile phone containing information that Singh had shared with the Pakistani operatives, along with the contact details of 20 persons linked to Islamabad's intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence, said the director general of police. 'Thorough financial and technical investigations are underway to trace other linkages and establish the full scope of this espionage network,' Yadav said on X, while adding that a first information report had been registered under the Official Secrets Act. Further investigation was underway, Yadav added. The strikes were in response to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which killed 26 persons on April 22. Over the past few weeks, at least 15 persons have been arrested across the country on allegations of spying for Pakistan and leaking sensitive information about Operation Sindoor. On Saturday, the National Investigation Agency also conducted raids at 15 locations in eight states that were suspected to be linked to Pakistani intelligence operatives.
