199 AP police officers left without postings, pay: MP

Tirupati: Tirupati MP Dr Maddila Gurumoorthy has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top constitutional authorities, seeking immediate intervention over the continued sidelining of nearly 199 police officers in Andhra Pradesh. In his letter dated July 18, he described the situation as a violation of service norms and constitutional provisions. According to the MP, 199 police officers, including four IPS officers, have been placed in VR (Vacancy Reserve) or compulsory wait since June 2024. These officers have been attached to the DGP's office in Mangalagiri without any assigned responsibilities or payment of salaries. They are required to mark daily attendance but have not been given postings or financial support. Dr Gurumoorthy stated that many officers are facing financial stress, having to manage housing and family expenses without allowances. He said that some were staying in rented accommodation without House Rent Allowance and are struggling to pay for their children's education or medical needs of family members. He pointed out that no disciplinary or legal proceedings have been initiated against these officers, and that their treatment goes against the IPS Conduct Rules and the Supreme Court's judgment in Prakash Singh vs Union of India, which protects officers from arbitrary action and promotes proper use of police personnel. The MP also mentioned that some of the officers in compulsory wait are being used for unofficial duties such as VIP security or political events, without proper orders, allowances, or access to government vehicles. In some instances, he said they were travelling in uniform using public transport. The MP added that officers nearing retirement are particularly affected, with delays in postings and pension contributions. In some cases, he said, officers have been given postings only on the day of retirement after a full year without salary. Dr Gurumoorthy requested that the Prime Minister direct the Andhra Pradesh government to reinstate the affected officers, release their pending salaries and allowances, and restore pension contributions.

In war against drug menace, Punjab Police crackdown traces major hawala conduits in Turkey, UAE

Investigations by Punjab Police into the hawala network, which funds and fuels the drugs smuggling trade in the state, has revealed that much of the illegal cash is routed through Turkey, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Malaysia, Canada, and West Asia. The Anti Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), which has been spearheading the 'Yudh Nashyean Virudh' (war on drugs) campaign in the state has been investigating the cross border linkages of the hawala transactions and has found that the maximum transactions are routed through UAE and West Asia and that money exchangers based in India are the prime movers of this illicit cash. Speaking to The Indian Express, Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab, Gaurav Yadav said that the crackdown on hawala network is one of the most important aspects of the war on drugs. 'We have arrested 60 people till now in connection with hawala networks linked to drugs and have recovered more than Rs 12 crore. The investigations by ANTF have found that people from different states and professions are involved in it. Linkages have been found in Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Karnataka apart from Punjab,' said Yadav. The DGP said that it is essential to hit at the financial aspect of the drugs trade so as to make it unprofitable for anyone to venture into drugs smuggling. 'The seizure and forfeiture of property being done by the Punjab Police under the relevant provisions of the NDPS Act are also a step towards this aim. All these so called gains from the drugs trade have to be traced and connected to the big fish,' said the DGP. A senior official from ANTF said that the most commonly used conduits are currency exchanges but they have also found the involvement of some mobile repair store owners in this illegal activity. 'The international links reach Dubai, Malaysia, Canada, Pakistan and Turkey. There are digital and coded transactions over phones and bank account layering is done to obscure proceeds from heroin sales,' the official said. Recovery of Rs 4.22 crore hawala money along with 423 grams heroin, 372g gold, four cars, and motorcycles. Four inter-state hawala operators were arrested. In this case backward linkages in recovery of heroine in Amritsar led to unearthing of hawala network being run by forex agents Ashok Kumar and his brothers in Phagwara, Kapurthala. Drug was being smuggled from Pakistan by one Shahbaz, a resident of Pakistan's Narowal district, through Gurbhej Singh alias Bheja who was lodged in Amritsar Jail. The hawala money was being routed through through one gym operator Harmanjit alias Harry to the forex operator Ashok Kumar who would further launder it to Dubai. In this case there was a recovery of 7kg opium along with Rs.23 lakh of drug money. Total seven people were arrested. Here, one Iqbal was the mastermind who was collecting the hawala money on the instructions of foreign based criminal Joban Kaler. Here the money was being deposited to the forex operator Ashok Kumar of Phagwara, Kapurthala. An international narco-hawala link to a Turkey-based smuggler Navpreet Bhullar was unearthed. Six people were arrested with 1kg heroine and Rs 84.02 lakh hawala money while Rs 22 lakh has been frozen in bank accounts. Turkey based Navpreet Bhullar is the mastermind of this case with Gurdeep Saab being his on ground worker in Amritsar. In this case an interstate drug network was busted with the recovery of 60kg heroin from Barmer in Rajasthan. Eleven people were arrested out of which four are from Jammu and Kashmir, two from Rajasthan, one from Haryana and four from Punjab. During the interrogation, it came to fore that Manish Daga from Jodhpur and Ashok Punjabi from Jodhpur were handling the hawala operations within India. They were acting in close coordination with Dharmendra (resident of Ajmer), who is currently residing in Dubai. Dharmendra, in turn, is directly in touch with Tanveer Shah, a Pakistan-based smuggler believed to be the mastermind behind the cross-border drug operations. Five people have been arrested in this case. In the course of investigations significant revelations regarding hawala operations have emerged during the interrogation of the main accused Jagjit Singh, resident of Tilak Nagar, Delhi, from whom Rs .6.9 Lakh has been recovered. Originally from Afghanistan, Jagjit returned to India in 2014 and had since been operating as a key hawala conduit for cross-border drug proceeds. He is working on the instructions of one Pakistan based smuggler namely Pathan.

10 arrested from six states for running inter-state religious conversion, radicalisation racket

Lucknow: While probing the mysterious disappearance of two sisters, aged 33 and 18, in Agra, Uttar Pradesh Police uncovered a sophisticated network involved in illegal religious conversions and radicalisation. The breakthrough led to a coordinated crackdown and the arrest of 10 operatives across six states, including fresh arrests on Saturday. The first arrest came of Shekhar Roy and Osama from Kolkata, who had trapped the two sisters from Agra and converted them. Their arrest led to the uncovering of the gang. Those arrested include a woman named SB Krishna from Goa, Shekhar Roy and Osama from Kolkata, Rehman Qureshi from Agra, Mohammed Ali, Ali and Junaid Qureshi from Jaipur, Abu Talib from Muzaffarnagar, Manoj from Delhi, and Abur Rehman from Dehradun. An Agra court granted a ten-day police custody remand for all the ten accused. Director general of police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna in Lucknow told reporters that the network operated through "love jihad" tactics, online radicalisation, and foreign funding from Canada, the USA, Dubai, and London, with transactions routed via dark web. "The network was funnelling money through the dark web and adopting tactics resembling the signature style of ISIS," the state police chief said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Preliminary findings suggest that the group had active ties with banned outfits like PFI and SDPI, with handlers connected to Pakistan-based operatives. The DGP said that the action forms part of 'Mission Asmita', an internal initiative launched to confront emerging challenges, including alleged forced/deceitful conversion, online radicalisation, and funding channels purportedly exploiting "love jihad" tactics. "In the past, under this mission, we made arrests of Umar Gautam and Mufti Jahangir Alam, who were arrested by UP ATS in 2021 for running a pan-India religious conversion racket. The two were also convicted for a life term by a court in 2024," said another senior police officer. Agra police commissioner Deepak Kumar, who came all the way to Lucknow, said that it all began after an FIR was registered regarding the March disappearance of two sisters. It was lodged at Sadar Bazar police station, Agra, and later transferred for technical probes to the district cyber police station. Sections 87, 111(3), and 111(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sections 3/5 of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021, were invoked. Investigators say evidence pointed to a wider organised operation spanning multiple states. "When we dug deeper, a pan-India syndicate surfaced. Forty-five teams were sent to Goa, West Bengal, Delhi, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan, based on surveillance. We made arrests and found that the network allegedly targeted vulnerable women through emotional manipulation, facilitated radicalisation via curated content, and arranged conversions with necessary documentation. It provided safe houses, managed foreign funds from Canada and the US, and offered operational support, including new phones, SIM cards, legal assistance, and internal communication channels," said Kumar. "We will now conduct a sustained interrogation of the accused," said Kumar.

SIT will be set up if necessary based on police report on Dharmasthala case, says CM

Chief minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said the government would take appropriate action in regard to the allegations of mass burials and sexual assaults in Dharmasthala, including the possible formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), based on the findings of the police department. SIT will be set up if necessary based on police report on Dharmasthala case, says CM 'If SIT is necessary, it will be constituted. It will be based on the police department's report. The individual was absconding for 10 years; he has now made a statement before the police and has said whatever he has to. He has said that he is the one who has buried the dead bodies and that he will show the spot where they are buried. Let's see what the police say in a couple of days,' the chief minister said, referring to the key anonymous witness whose claims sparked the controversy. The chief minister maintained that his administration was not under any external pressure. 'Even if the pressure is put, we will not heed to anything, we will do things in accordance with law,' he said. Siddaramaiah's remarks came in the backdrop of a public appeal by retired Supreme Court judge justice V Gopala Gowda, who urged the government to immediately set up a SIT under judicial supervision. He also called for full state protection for the key witness and his legal team. 'The state must immediately guarantee protection to the whistleblower and his legal team. If anything happens to them, the home minister and the DGP will be directly responsible,' justice Gowda said on Thursday, raising concerns about procedural irregularities and intimidation by investigators. Justice Gowda further called for the removal of the current investigation officers and stressed that a new probe must be conducted under the supervision of a sitting or retired high court or Supreme Court judge. 'The investigating officer is calling outsiders while recording the statement and is asking questions as instructed by them. This is unacceptable and dangerous for the truth. A new SIT under judicial oversight is the only way forward,' he said. Meanwhile, lawyers representing the whistleblower submitted a detailed memorandum to chief minister Siddaramaiah, home minister G Parameshwara, the Karnataka director general of police (DGP), the Chief Justice of India, and the chief justice of the Karnataka High Court. The memorandum accused local police officials of colluding with external parties, leaking confidential details from the case, and attempting to derail the investigation. The legal team claimed that the whistleblower's statement, recorded on July 14, had surfaced in a YouTube video that remained online for more than 11 hours. 'This video features an individual who openly claims that the information was provided to him directly by police insiders. Neither our client Sri V nor our legal team have any link whatsoever with this individual. This leak proves beyond doubt that serving officers connected with the probe are wilfully compromising it by sharing sensitive leads with unauthorised third parties,' the petition stated. The case revolves around the claims of a former sanitation worker from Dharmasthala who alleged that, over a span of years, he was forced to bury the bodies of women and children in and around the temple town. Based on his testimony, the state police registered a case and said they would exhume remains near the Nethravathi river.
