WI vs AUS, 2nd Test: Smith, Green score fifties to put Australia in control v West Indies on Day 3
Australia, 1-0 up in the three-Test series, was back in charge after recovering its second innings from 12 for two at the start of the day to 221 for seven at Stumps and a decent lead of 254 runs.
With the pitch playing tricks, often shooting low, Australia was beginning to like its chances of setting a target that was beyond the West Indies' reach.
AS IT HAPPENED: West Indies vs Australia, 2nd Test Day 3 Highlights
'We are in a nice spot,' Smith said. 'I don't think the wicket is going to get any better, will probably do a few more tricks. The new ball is going to be pretty crucial for us. Hopefully, we can get (the lead) up to somewhere around 300.'
Australia generally laboured to score 209 runs in 58.3 overs, with around three delays for showers that added up to nearly two hours of play lost. When Stumps were called because of bad light, Alex Carey was on 26 off 27 balls with captain Pat Cummins on four.
But they were on top.
Smith joined Green after nightwatchman Nathan Lyon held out for nine overs to reach eight.
The first ball Smith faced from Alzarri Joseph smashed his right glove. Inside the glove was the pinkie finger he dislocated in the World Test Championship final last month, and which sidelined him from the first Test in Barbados.
'It was not ideal (getting hit on the finger), but it feels all right,' Smith said. 'It is that kind of surface. Some can shoot up, you might have to take a few on the hands.'
Green resumed the day on six and soon passed his highest score at No. 3 in the order, 15. After Lunch, his fifth boundary earned him 50 off 122 balls.

But on the next ball, he was out when he edged Shamar Joseph onto his stumps. Green finished on 52 and ended a 93-run partnership with Smith.
Smith's sixth boundary brought up his 50 in 79 balls.
He and Travis Head got Australia to Tea and a lead of 208.
But soon after, Smith was trapped by Justin Greaves. Smith reviewed, but it showed the ball hitting his pad in front of the off-stump. His 71 off 119 balls included seven boundaries and a six flogged off Roston Chase over long-off.
Greaves also got Beau Webster for 2, but Head and Carey gave the total a 31-run surge before Head's off-stump was bowled by Shamar Joseph on 39.

Shubman Gill Compared To Virat Kohli, Given Massive 'Legend' Compliment After 430 Runs In 1 Test
Former England batter Jonathan Trott was left awestruck with India captain Shubman Gill's glittering knock of 161 in the second innings of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Lauding Gill's marathon knock, which guided India to a mammoth 427/6d and set a target 608 for England, Trott said it was pure dominance from the 25-year-old to show his batting maturity. Gill also played a career-best knock of 269 along with Ravindra Jadeja's 89 in the first essay to take the side to 587. 'I honestly feel privileged to be here and witness that innings. I can't recall him giving the English bowlers even a single chance. The way he shifted gears - hitting sixes at will - without slogging, just pure cricket shots, was something special. Today, he showed how complete a batter he is. It reminded me of the previous Indian number four - almost a carbon copy of that genius. I don't think he could've dreamed of a better start to his first two Tests on this tour. Sure, he'd have liked to win at Headingley, but now he's hopefully set up a fantastic victory here tomorrow," Trott said on JioHotstar. Former India pacer Varun Aaron also talked highly of the visiting captain and said Gill has done a lot of hard work for the England tour. 'Shubman just can't seem to put a foot wrong, and I hope this form continues for as long as possible. But it hasn't happened by chance. He's put in a lot of hard work — even during the IPL — to improve as a red-ball player. He's tweaked his tactics, changed his technique a bit, and you can see the results. When someone as talented as Shubman Gill puts in the hard yards, he steps into that 'legend' territory," he said. Heading into Day 5, India are in a commanding position, with England still requiring 536 runs to chase down a mammoth target of 608 in Birmingham amid rain threat. In the final session of Day 4, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep made early inroads into England's lineup, dismissing openers Zak Crawley (0) and Ben Duckett (25), before removing the world's top-ranked Test batter, Joe Root, within the first 11 overs of the innings. The fiery spell firmly placed India in control as they aim to square the series. On Akash Deep's spirited performance and celebration, Aaron added, 'Akash Deep hasn't had an easy journey. He's from Bihar and had to try for different states because the Bihar Cricket Association has had its struggles. He eventually moved to Bengal - as an outsider - and had to earn his place among locals. He made a name for himself there. Coming from a small town in Bihar and performing like this for India in England, it obviously means the world to him. His celebration said it all - it was his way of saying, 'I'm here to stay'.'

Ravi Shastri 'can't believe' Shubman Gill's tactics after India's delayed start, Akash Deep proves him wrong immediately
On a rain-affected final day at Edgbaston, India found themselves racing not just against England, but against the clock and weather gods to level the series. With the hosts resuming on 72/3 and rain having washed over an hour's play already, the pressure was on the bowlers to deliver quick breakthroughs if India were to secure a win and draw level at 1-1 in the five-match contest. Akash Deep gave Indian an early breakthrough after rain delayed the start of Day 5 in the second Test(X) It was at this juncture that Ravi Shastri, on commentary duty, questioned India's bowling choice, specifically the absence of Mohammed Siraj from the attack. 'I can't believe that the senior-most bowler, the man who has taken the maximum number of wickets in this game, is not bowling,' Shastri said on air. 'Mohammed Siraj, six in the first innings, one in the second. He's watching from mid-on as his junior partners are bowling. He'd be hoping they strike, otherwise he would be itching to get the ball.' No sooner had the words left Shastri's mouth than Akash Deep produced the moment of the session. With Pope looking to press forward to a shortish delivery outside off, the extra bounce caught him off guard. His low hands proved costly as the ball thudded into the back elbow and rolled onto the stumps. Deep exploded in celebration, roaring and leaping into the arms of his teammates, as India edged further ahead. The early breakthrough on a rain-hit final day was a massive boost for the visitors, who ended Day 4 needing seven more wickets for victory. A strong performance India had earlier tightened the screws late on Saturday, with Siraj and Deep tearing through England's top order with the new ball. Zak Crawley was dismissed for a duck, caught behind by substitute fielder Sai Sudharsan. Duckett, after surviving a DRS call, was eventually bowled off an inside edge for 25. Deep followed up with a beauty to send Joe Root back for 6, leaving England on the back foot. India's imposing total of 587, powered by Shubman Gill's record-breaking 269 and his 200+ partnerships with Jadeja and Washington Sundar, gave them a massive cushion. England are now four down and still need over 500 runs to win, putting the ball firmly in India's court.
